  • Extensive dry-docking period of the famous/historical and powerful seagoing tug ELBE at v/d Brink Shipyard Pernis/Rotterdam. Special attention for the original riveting process during this docking period !!
This famous most powerful (at the 50th. years) tug, built for SMIT INTERNATIONAL in 1957, has been completely restored in it's original execution, after having served as an oceangoing tugboat worldwide, a pilot station (MARYLAND) in Canada and as the famous GREENPEACE for this organization.
In 2002, she returned to the Netherlands and now she is back at her original home-port MAASSLUIS near Rotterdam as a floating maritime monument.under the supervision of
    Stichting Maritime Collectie Rijnmond.

25:48 - "Buizerd" tugboat. As a 11 year old, i certainly remember that tug operating in the harbors of Schiedam when I lived on the 'Havendijk' from 1964 - 1968. Great memories.

For the uninitiated, one must spend some amount of time in and around vessels and drydocks to understand the process. At first, the overwhelming magnitude of the task @ hand seems daunting, but as the work progresses all of the ancillary systems along with the major overhauls are accomplished seemingly miraculously.

Note; Bear in mind that the tug was in the hands of GREENPEACE and nominated to be scrapped.
At the last moment, a group of volunteers took over the "wreck" , so saving her from the scrapyard and worked hard (2004 to 2015) to bring her back to her original "tugboat" status. This docking was a part of the restoration process
and now she is a beautiful MUSEUMship, full operational and fulfilling all modern requirements but in her original livery as much as possible. Do visit her in MAASSLUIS , The Netherlands !!

In the US Navy, I was stationed for 2 years on a YTB, Natick Class, with 13’ draft, and a 13’ screw-tiny, compared with the Elbe! That tug looked small in a dry dock which holds Aircraft Carriers, when we had to be dry docked for a month, for repairs. We towed huge cruisers with that tugboat, 700-800’ long.

I know a lot of people hate when historic ships are modified like this. Personally, I'd rather see this happen than for them to be scrapped or left to rust away tied to a dock. This old girl has many year left in her and updating her systems to modern types saves her from the scrappers. It's even better when the mods are done in a way that you can't tell anything was changed.

As she sails now, its handy to have a bow thruster, manouvering into tight spaces whitout the need of a harbour tug every time, Remember she is build as a long haul ocean going tug, The few times she was in tight spaces they would need a harbour tug connected to it if really nessesairy, Now she is used for small day trips, so a bowprop comes in really handy.

We don't have bow thruster (and we neither want them) which means getting out from the quay in Motala is a small mess due to the plastic pleasure crafts now blocking the original route in and out of the canal (Göta.) A lot of maneuvring back and forth .... if we don't have assistance with the mooring from land.

It is NOT a stationary "museum" however a full operational seagoing tugboat (museum ship) making trips with 12 up 80 (max.) passengers!
It has passed all safety and seaworthiness tests required by international insurance companies like Lloyds Register. The bow thruster is added to enable manovering in "narrow" area's. The original design was an OCEAN going tug for long distance transports.
Sofar it has made several trips to "nautical alhappenings" like Sail Amsterdam, Hamburg, Brest, Antwerp and so on.... For bookings and price information / availability see the website www: zeesleperelbe.nl
