  • Your driving lessons are finally done. Your driver’s license is now in your hands, and you’re ready to set off into the sunset with your car. But there’s a lot of responsibility when it comes to driving, and even though it might not feel this way at first - knowing how to handle certain situations can be a true lifesaver.
Even with the slightest experience you get as a new driver, you might already feel like you know everything about the road. But there are a lot of things that you need to experience first-hand in order to know what you need to do. Here're some great examples to help you prepare.
    TIMESTAMPS:

    Running off the road 7:12
Let’s talk about Urban Driving 7:58
Don’t forget the Interstate Driving 8:46
    #drivingtips #cars #brightside
    SUMMARY:
    - When it’s raining, make sure your headlights are on, even in the daytime. That’ll help you be more visible to oncoming vehicles, and it’ll also help you see clearer.
    - Always wear sunglasses, and keep your visor down when it’s needed. But that’s not enough: make sure you go slower in these conditions to give yourself enough time to react when you need to.
    - Foggy spells can be truly unexpected, especially during the Fall, when patches of fogginess appear around the roads in the morning. In this situation, always keep your headlights on and be alert.
    - First things first, even when you’re confident with your driving, make sure you drive around at night a few times to familiarize yourself with it.
    - One thing you should keep in mind is to dim your lights when you come across an oncoming car. It’s unbelievably easy to be blinded by someone’s high beams and go off the road.
    - If car accidentally runs off the road, the first thing you need to do is get your foot off the gas and try to guide the car towards the pavement.
    - When you’re driving in an urban area, be aware the whole time. Don’t let yourself lose attention at any point.
    - Driving on the interstate teaches you what driving in heavy traffic conditions really feels like. And one thing that you’ll learn from that is how to merge with the rest of the traffic, how to change lanes correctly, and how to take an exit.
    - You should learn to look over your shoulder, as well, and make sure that there are no other vehicles in your “blind Spot”.

Signal EVERY LANE CHANGE - even when you think it won't affect anyone. And even though it seems like no one else does it. Remember: signalling is not asking for PERMISSION to change lanes; it is a WARNING that you are about to attempt to change lanes. Signalling tells people to look out for you and not aim for the same place you are.

    - The most important thing to remember is to always allow people to get around you, don't be an obstruction to the flow of traffic.
    - Never park over grass, it can start a fire.
    - Always keep your car and it's windows clean inside and out.
    - If you ever loose control, let off the gas and keep your eyes where you want the car to go, not where you don't want to end up.
    - Take driving classes even after you get your license, it takes many years to master driving and you need to be a good example on the roads for everyone.
Now, go clean your room and earn that car :)

@@mrtoad1408 because the exhaust system (catalytic converter) can be at temperatures near 1400°F after heavy driving.
Any dry grass ect. that makes contact with it will start an ember that often leads to combustion.

A lifestyle interstate trucker told me that Being in a car can be sort of freaky because it feels like you're moving faster when you are closer to the ground than you're used to being. Also, if you are used to driving a trailer truck you tend to make unnecessarily wide turns in a car. ;)

You really DO need to adjust your speed at night. Your reaction time IS reduced. You will have less time to avoid that ladder that fell off a truck before it entered your sight line.
Remember this even though it seems like everyone else is driving just as fast as they want at night.

    • @cliftut
      @cliftut 4 роки тому +11

The rule of thumb I was given for reaction time (the time it takes to brake successfully) is that your reaction and brake time as about three-point-something seconds for the average person. So, the vehicle ahead of you should ideally be about four seconds ahead of you, whatever the speed. Take note of a spot on the road when it passes by or under the nearest car ahead of you, and count the seconds from when it leaves them, "One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand". If the spot on the road passes your car before you are done counting, you may not have time to brake before hitting them in an emergency.
This works for night driving, too. Follow a non-reflective spot on the road (since you can see reflective items before you will see a nearer pedestrian on the road or other hazard) and count from the moment it becomes visible in your headlight cone until it passes under your vehicle. That is about how much time you will have to brake for an animal, person, or other hazard that has no reflective markings.

Never drive sleepy. Never drink and drive. Know the fluid levels of your engine to function correctly. Check your vehicle suspension and engine always you re taking long trips. Study the way from departure point to arriving point in a map to select the best route according to your driving and navigating experience. Never take from copilot a serios or untalkative person. Carry snacks, favorite music, water, and some lunch if you have to do long trips. Always carry a toolbox for unexpexted situations. Carry always a can to inflate and repair tires in case of puncture by nails screws or other.

Knowing that everyone behind me is waiting for me to get into that spot is so stressful and I’m often scared that I will hit the car next to me (especially when parking in between two cars). I’ve been taught some formulas for single-move parking but when I’m doing that in real world it never works because I’m stressed by the line behind me or scared of hitting the cars while turning my vehicle…

Why am I watching this? I've driving for over a decade lol. Anyways, good advice and good video quality.
My advice, hmm, try not to tailgate and pay attention to the behaviors of drivers around you. Sometimes you can tell when people are driving strangely if you pay attention, and those people are most likely to make a sudden stop or abrupt maneuver. This has saved me from an accident many times.
Also, when lane changing, especially on the highway, give a quick glance for cars two lanes over that are driving parallel to you, because they might try to move over to the same spot that you are at the same time. They can't see your turn signal most of the time, and you can't see theirs.
People aren't perfect and being attentive can save you from fender benders and terrible accidents alike, whether they are your fault or not. And stop texting!

A few years ago I had to learn how to handle a front wheel drive car that's like taming a completely different animal. At a stop sign or red light on a snow covered street, the front wheels tend to spin even when trying to start slowly and the front of the car slides sideways into the curb and gets stuck there.

As for starters coming from a pre-teen, never take your eyes of the road unless you're on brakes and the vehicle not moving.
As for driving on highways, always signal the "flasher" when changing lanes u never when there's a vehicle from the back coming through especially highways r very busy roads

My advice is if you're driving in the right most lane to the curb and you see a vehicle that's farther ahead in the lane to your left suddenly stop, I would say slow down and be prepared for a possible driver making a left turn into a plaza, building etc.
Conversly if you're looking to make a left turn into a plaza, building, mall etc. and a car in the opposite lane stops and waves you through, you should take extreme caution and go fowards at a snail's pace while looking as far left as you can to make sure the lane next to the driver who stopped for you is clear before you commit to the left turn fully and make the turn.
That's because the car who stopped for you and waved you to make the turn in front of them might be trying to do you a favor, but it can also cause an accident if you assume that the lane or lanes beside him are all clear as well. So just crawl foward until you have a clear view of all the lanes before you accelerate and finish the turn.
Also if you see someone from the opposite lane or in the center lane waiting to make a left turn, keep driving and don't stop for them because you have the right of way and it can be dangerous. The only time I ever stop and make room for left turning cars sitting in the opposite or center lanes is if I'm already stopped because of a red light. Since I'm already not moving, I leave a space for cars to make turns in front of me because its mostly safe to do so.

I only "just" got my license, but have been with and around cars all my life so i easily passed the exam. Thats also why ive got plenty of tips, but the most important one ill share is:
If you're on a hill, lets say a traffic light, where you know you'll roll backwards, use your handbrake so you can focus on handling the clutch and throttle. When you feel the car wanting to move, remove the handbrake. Learn like this until you are comfortable doing it without the handbrake.
(I still use this for VERY steep hills, like in mountain areas, just to be sure/safe)

My eyes are extremely light sensitive so I always wear dark sunglasses. Even when there is heavy fog, and when it rains. Always be prepared for anything and everything when you're driving. One thing I can't stand is when people have there high beams on during heavy and thick fog. That makes it harder to see. I also hate it when people have there lights on during the day makes it harder to see and judge distances. Daytime running lights cause more glare so I wear sunglasses.
This would be an expensive idea added to cars but they can add sensors to cars so when a driver's eyes are light sensitive the car would detect that and automatically turn off when approaching the drivers whose eyes are sensitive to light. I have astigmatism really bad and a extra strong prescription.
I even have to wear sunglasses at night sometimes just so the glare isn't bad.
I actually see better when it's near dark outside and no lights. Sometimes the lights trigger a "visual migraine" for me. That's why I'm careful.

I wrote this as a reply, but I'm reposting to the main thread for general info:

If your legs feel like spaghetti you are doing things wrong. Your left leg should never cross over the right. Left is for clutch, right for gas and brake only.

I just started driving and I’m nervous but not to the point to where it is distracting me . It’s more an exciting nervous where I’m more excited to drive than anything but I’m just bad at it is all lol.

Nope! My permit license expire 2026 and I live in Colorado. I got so much time to practice for the REAL driver's license test! I'm 40 and still need more improvements on being awareness of incoming cars by yield and 4 way intersections stop signs of who has the right-of-ways & people walking in the day/nights using crosswalks. I just need to normal pace speed driving and keep it there, slow down and not go too fast for a pull-over for a ticket passing the speed limit signs or run pass red lights. These are very helpful tips. Thank you!

I live in NYC where you're thrown to the wolves during your road test. No parking lots-busy streets, broken U-turn and parallel parking is required to pass. 😎

I drive on public roads as a part of my job in a pickup truck that's obviously a work truck and has my company's branding all over it.
Drive past us: the work truck probably has a set speed limit they're allowed to travel and are trying to travel as fast as they can which is most likely around the speed limit.
I see so many times where there's a line of traffic on the highway because a car is just tailing a work vehicle and others are doing the same and then other work vehicles can't pass even two or three cars because the speed required to do so would alert their bosses. Literal conga lines on the highway with plenty of clear road ahead because a few vehicle won't pass a work vehicle and makes it seem like there's way more traffic ahead.
Also, there are many times when several cars on the highway are traveling side by side at the same speed; please try to slow down, accelerate, or merge and work together so there's literally not a travelling wall on the highway obstructing the flow of traffic. Generally don't impede the flow of traffic.
Don't travel slowly in the left lane and let cars pass you: yea you might think the speeding person is being reckless but they won't be the only person trying to pass you and you're also introducing a new risk to the road by creating a situation where faster drivers would want to drive around you and possibly pass dangerously through traffic.

having a license does not mean a go signal to start driving on the road even if u know you are not yet ready... keep practising with an experience driver... until you are truly ready😊🙏✌️

James correct me if I’m wrong, I live in the U.S. so I’m not 100% sure, but I hear that the autobahn is one of the safest highways in the world because of the fact that there is no speed limit. Drivers tend to be more cautious and check their surroundings more often in situations where speed isn’t enforced and they become more aware. That’s what I’ve heard.

@@PrestonBourgeois I think a huge factor is our "Rechtsfahrgebot" whitch means that you have to drive in the Right lane and are only allowed to use the middle or left lane if you a: are overtaking or b: can't merge in the right lane due to heavy traffic.
Due to this the slower traffic stays on the right side and the left lane is most of the times free for overtaking. Also it's illegal to overtake on the right side (i've heard this is legal in some states).
Lastly you are more cautious if there could be (and is) an BMW behind you going over 250 km/h.

Remember signaling doesn’t give you right of way. You need to use mirrors and do shoulder check. You must have at least have enough room to switch lanes.
