The range of talent that he has is amazing. Your channel is the absolute best for those who have moved beyond gear and technique videos. Thank you for daring to be different Ted!
I just wanna thank you and let you know that this episode really helped me a lot with my work process with my photography, especially on the part where you point out how Saul Leiter revisits approaches on taking photographs on the street!!! again thank you!
I've said it before, i'll say it again... Thanks for the great videos! I love these videos, I look forward to the end of the day, I can "chrome cast" these videos to the big tv and sit down and enjoy these analysis' and photos of the "greats" - thank you again! The Art of Photography
I rewatched this video another time. There is a fresh look at thinks that I don't find in your current productions Maybe is time. I don't know, I keep watching them though. Always interesting.
Great work as usual Ted! I find as I get more comfortable with the technical aspects of photography, your channel is the one I keep coming back to for inspriation and composition ideas.
Yet another truly informative, inspiring and all around enjoyable video, Ted. Thank you for keeping up this high level of quality! Nice to see more of Saul Leiter, I got to know his work via your videos and just last weekend I bought the Early Color book. Nice timing! ;-)
ted, i watch your show more than the other photography shows because you truly know your subject and you present it in a manner that is insightful without pretense or condecension...one day, i feel brave enough to pick up a camera and start shooting...i just enjoying watching your videos showing me how to do it...
Great video, i really enjoy your commentary and insights, it is done with lots of passion and intelligence. Saul Leiter was such an amazing talent, his portraits in the 1st volume are stunningly beautiful. I bought this book as soon as it came out it gets better and better the more i look at it. Cheers, jon
So cool to come across this. I saw a Saul Leiter photograph (original or copy, not sure) framed in a woman's houuse in Oxford, England, once. It was so beautiful and the partial blurring really caught my imagination - so evocative. Had no idea who it was by though, so am feeling happy and inspired to know now. Thanks so much xx
By the way... my little daughter who is really into dolls (called Baby Alives) is to blame for this weird sign in, which i accidentally used. Sorry! Sounds so strange!
got the "all about Saul Leiter" book-catalogue today. Pretty cool one. Sad that I missed the solo exhibition that was somewhere near where I live, in 2018.
If you can't get your hands on the early black and white/ colour books, i really recommend the Saul Leiter Retrospective done by Kehrer Verlag, includes a lot of his fashion work and painting aswell as many images, and essays written by friends
This one was really nice. Loved it. Ted can you do a review of some Indian photographer like Raghu Rai or nay other. That would be really nice as it will give perspective from a different area.
it is so interesting to see these two different styles and his explorations/experiments. this will make me think. thank you, Ted! just ordered the french edition that's still available. the Steidl website says 'reprinting' for the english edition... but who knows when...
I enjoy all your "The Art of Photography" series ! Can I suggest you now include an expose of Gary Winogrand ! ...why he is the Michelangelo and Caravaggio of 20th Century photography ! take some time and review his stuff!
BUT: he is already including “smears of light” as compositional elements. Notice also how he shifts the “subject” slightly to one side so the “in distinct background nothing” becomes a part of it. I would say he’s already Saul Leiter. And lest not forget that behind the scenes lurks the ever present vortex of abstract expressionism, Hans Hoffman, push-pull, open field poetics, Black Mountain, and the mountain that was the Art Students’ League.
Getting more obvious (with the fade style) for the edits in this one.... Not necessarily a bad thing, it's just I'm used to your style being more of a straight run at the subject. Was the cat jumping on the table again? ;-) By the way, I appreciate the lack of a car or movie advert at the start of your work. They really do distract and have nothing to do with the actual content. Keep it up!
(! maybe someone with more knowledge can help me!) okay, honestly I don't really know anything about photography, but I was once in an ehibition calles "nudes" with photos taken by Saul Leiter, David Lynch and Helmut Newton and now I'm looking for a certain photo from this ehibition, that my friend really really likes. I don't know the name or the photographer (of these three). It was taken on a boat, could have been the European Mediterranian Coast and on the boat was a young woman with dark hair, looking (i think smiling) into the camera. She is wearing a light shirt and one of her breasts is exposed. if i remember correctly it is black and white. If anyone knows something I would be sooo thankful!! (and sorry for my english, it's not my native language)
off subject a little.....something you said about saul being influenced by a painter....again.. it comes up often, and so it should...But is it ever the case of influence happening the other way round, photographers influencing artists. scraping my memory i'm sure a "big name French impressionist" is said to have learnt a more dramatic framing approach through seeing certain photographers work.

Great video on Saul Leiter. I remember when you introduced us (or me) to him back in 2013 and on Pinterest. Thanks for what you do, Ted!

Nadja Niemann You'll love it. And yes - its hard to say when reprinting will be. I think they could sell them for sure - its a beautiful book!
nice one i held a lot of these in my hands in a gallery in antwerp a couple of months ago
Thank you so much. You do important job!
Thanks for this interesting presentation! I just bought ‘Early Colors’.
I enjoy all your "The Art of Photography" series ! Can I suggest you now include an expose of Gary Winogrand ! ...why he is the Michelangelo and Caravaggio of 20th Century photography ! take some time and review his stuff!
Often come back for a re watch for some inspiration ☺️👍
The aspect ratio of the pictures tells me that they were made with a 35 mm camera. Am I correct?
very interesting!
I am your fan from Brazil
R -fontana Thanks! I'm you're fan too!!!

Thanks, Ted. Can you do a video on Susan Meiselas, Richard Renaldi, or Dawoud Bey? They are more recent than most photographers you've featured.
Time for a video on your Strymon stack!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was lucky got the last English copy from steidl its fantastic
I think a relative topic would be how today's photographers consider the choice of color or not

I was looking at Patreon.com a place where people can support youtube creators, is there any other way we can support what you are doing?
I have the black and white set I don't care much for his color work

your videos are making me edgy to start taking pictures again

I never see any great photographer obey the rules of thirds etc.
Rubbish comments ….. not Leiter in any way….. this man hardly speaks English.
