It's very interesting how they used different technology back then.
I wonder if Playmobil will make new train sets.

This brings back so many good memories! I was just 3 years old in 1985 when my dad bought the original 1981 trainset with the red shunter. A year later that set got expanded with another trainset that looks a bit like this one n the video but with blue passenger cars. My dad did a smart move never showing me the whole set. So I only got the engine for Christmas and I remember being very happy with it. On different occasions like my Birthday or on Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas, a dutch holiday feast, somewhat like christmas) I got presents with the extra passenger carriage, some extra rails etc. spread out over some years to slowly build up my whole train set. Some years later I crawled into tight spaces in the attic cause why not? :) There I discovered yet another one of those sets I got when I was 3! This was obviously never intended for me to find. But so I ended up with three(!) Playmobil trains with a shitload of tracks. Oh how fortunate I was to experience all this as a child, I never really realized. I don't know where everything is now, I guess at my Uncle's... my life really turned upside down later on, but anyway that's not the point, just love to see this. Even the sound of the train riding the track brings back so many good memories, I often laid down watching the train go by and go by until I unknowingly fell asleep.

I still have my Great West train. Played with it so much when I was growing up and it's amazing how well these trains were made for kids. The metal contacts under the train that touches the tracks can collect dirt and debris. This can interfere with the electricity provided to the train. To fix this just use an erasure to clean the contacts and it will work.

My dad bought one of these and it was so awesome to play with. The colors on it are pretty faded now but it's still definitely enjoyable.
