Excellent! I've just bought a late 2012 MiniMac to run all my plugins with AudioGridder to my iMac. Thanks for this video - really useful.

Thanks for the video. I also have UAD but only an Apollo Twin mkII with 2 dsp. Gonna try this and see if I should ditch the ancient 400 mhz sharp processors from 2009 on the Apollo.

Thank you very good video. Quick question....can you run UAD on the slave computer and control them from the master? i.e. plug the satellites into the MacMini and run remotely from there? I like having a light laptop to work on around different rooms of the house without being chained with all these DSP dongles!

Hello, I work in Logic Pro X too. An important question, How about of automatization of plugins into the DAW and control these plugins with a Control Surface like the SSL UF8 with Audiogridder? I want to buy a new M1 MacMini and use my old MacMini Late 2012 4-core i7 as a server but I don't want to lose those features.

AudioGridder add a lot of latency. Specialy if you use multiples servers. If you want to automate a plugin, put it in native mode.
Do you will be able to automate in real time?… it depends of the complexity of your workflow. Try it!

Hi! i been following the audiogridder for a while, nice setup you made, but i would really like to hear a native vs UAD sound comparison, im pretty sure they are not the same, and thats why dsp consumption is different. Are you able to try that? Bye!

It is the same plugin. As long you don't use the Apollo preamp, It is the exact same sound.

Laucha Nightshade THEY are EXACTLY the same, the UAD DSP Sharc Chips are about 15 years old and they are not special or make things sound better. UAD isn't special in anyway compared to a native plugin. The only digital plugins that are actually different are FPGA plugins because they are not digital they are "ANALOG Gate Arrays". But the UAD plugins are just 1s & 0s like every other plugin. Universal audio was great when computers were really slow 20 years ago but today it's all marketing hype. A $4000 interface comes with 6 DSPs chips that cost ($9 each from SHARC) which can run about 15 to 20 full SSL Preamp & Channel Strip plugins or about 10 Neve 1973 plugins. UAD is a rip off and I know I own 22 DSP chips in total and it's still a waste of money because I need about 40 more DSPs just to come close to what my 2019 Macbook Pro's CPU can do.

      @@joesalyers I agree 200% with you.

    • @G_handle

@@joesalyers I'll chime in just to say that YES, the DSP offload aspect was a big deal when UAD came out (as well as all the others that came out back then Duende, Powercore, etc.) But the others dropped off as CPUs got Moore's Law'd into the third decade of the twenty-first century. In other words, I agree that the bang for buck of the DSP aspect of UAD doesn't have the same Cost/Benefit relationship.
However, UAD Interfaces as opposed to the Satellites, are much more than just DSP. They're, you know Interfaces. And as such you have to measure the Quantity and Quality of their ability to get Analog to Digital and back again as well. In this regard they are Premium priced because they are top of their class in terms of Sound Quality, I/O Latency, and Reliability. Here in Los Angeles, most commercial Studios run UAD because the shit just works, in time=money critical situations.
The two killer features (now three) of UAD, imho, are each related to tracking. The low/realtime latency on the way in means we can use it like Analog. With UAD Console we can setup headphone mixes easily and track through effects, both influencing the performance and capturing closer to the final mix ready state.
The most important feature of UAD, again imho, is UNISON. First off the Preamps built in are pristine, which means by themselves they capture exactly what's plugged into them in a super fast, high resolution, almost clinical manner. By itself, that's not what you probably want, but what it means is that you can manipulate that capture with processing far more than other interface preamps. (I work in video as well, and it's like the difference between trying to color grade baked-in Rec709 vs camera RAW.) The reason for this ultra clean uncolored baseline though, is so you can engage their Unison Enabled Preamp Emulations, of which there's ten plus Amazing PREAMP and CONSOLE Channel Strip emulations that A) you can track through, but also B) actually change the impedance load of the hardware, so that you Microphones are loaded just as if plugged into the real gear. I've A/B'd the 1073s, the SSL, and the Avalons, and they're so damn close that any difference is irrelevant. At least to me.
So the point here is, comparing what you pay to what you get has to include what All you get, and how else could you get it. If you're only gonna mix, then these Tracking features may make your Cost/Benefit balance out differently. But if you track, then A) how much do you want to shape the signal on the way in? and B) how else would you do it?
To buy ANY of the Preamps being modeled in their Analog form, would cost you more than buying ALL of the Unison Emulations with the Interface, and the DSP to run them thrown in for free. It's all a matter of perspective.
That said, jumping into the UAD swamp with both feet also seems silly to me, precisely for what was shown in this video. I have a full Plugin Alliance membership (plus I own a bunch of the key plugs outright) as well as a bunch of Softube plugins. Both PA and Softube make additional versions of some of their plugins that are UAD ONLY versions. It has long annoyed me that if you already own one, you don't automatically get the other, or at least get a set LOW UPGRADE price. Even if you had both versions, in a mix situation WHY would you use the precious rare expensive UAD DSP rather than the cheap relatively abundant CPU in your host computer, unless your host computer was pretty weak? And if that was the case, instead of getting a $1500 Satellite, upgrade your computer. And this has nothing to do with AudioGridder, just your host machine outperforms those SHARK DSPs bang for buck wise, as you both pointed out.
With AudioGridder though, in a Mix situation where Latency is an easily compensated non-issue, then going through your UAD library and finding out ANYTHING in there that UA didn't make themselves and getting the VST(3) versions from the actual manufacturers, offloading that back to either your modern Host CPU or your AudioGridder remote CPUs for far less money, and freeing up the UAD DSP for more Universal Audio plugins that you can't get any other way. (To agree with what you both told the O.P.: in this situation, the UA vs VST versions not only sound the same, they ARE the same. The only difference is Where the code is being processed. Which calculator are you using to crunch the same math numbers. UAD's SHARK DSPs, your Host computer's CPU, or a Remote computer's CPU via AudioGridder.)
Again though, I have to push back on the idea that because UA Interfaces are Expensive, and no doubt they Are, they are somehow not worth their value, simply because you know how old and how much the parts inside the box cost. The question's for me are: do I want what that box does? how much is it? and how much would that cost elsewhere?

@@G_handle I understand the benefit of the UAD platform for studios and mobile recording engineers to save space or for convenient tracking situations. But modern small format digital mixers have had this option with more flexibility than UAD since 2003. Most multitrack digital mixers allow you to record the signal anywhere in the channels chain. From gain only to compressor only to comp and eq all the way to post fader. Yamaha's O1V96 as well as Tascam's DM series had these feature. Even more ironic the Mackie Digital X Bus Mixer had the ability to record from anywhere in the chain and you could install UAD plugins as an extra feature on that console. Yet in 2021 UAD make recording through their console app an all or nothing option. At least a per channel option would be helpful. Giving us the option to select recording effects on a channel by channel basis would only require a UAD Console software update and no hardware changes.
Now on to Unison. Unison is is a fancy term for impedance switching. That is all that is happening at the hardware level this is why you hear a massive click when you change Unison enabled plugins in the first slot on the console. The Apollo is switching the impedance. The Neve 1073/1081 has an impedance of 300ohms on the low setting and 1200 ohms on the high setting, everything else is handled is digital software. The Default impedance for the preamps in an Apollo are 5.5k Ohms (variable via Unison plug-ins). Just for reference a Midas Pro1 & M32 as well as Soundcraft's VI digital mixers use a 10 kΩ balanced or unbalanced impedance. This is why Universal audio do not tout the CMRR result for their microphone preamps in the Apollo line. Because even lower tier digital mixers would be able to beat them on specs alone. Common-Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) is the truest way to understand the quality of a microphone preamp. The Apollo version 3's CMRR is >73 dB at the default Input Impedance of 5.4K Ohms. The lower the impedance from a Unison plugin changing the impedance the worse the CMRR will become. My Analog Soundcraft MH2 console has a better CMRR than an Apollo and that console is over 18 years old. My Soundcraft MH2 has a CMRR of >84 DB Contrast that to the Midas M32 or even the Behringer X32 for that matter and the CMRR >90 DB. Basically the lower the impedance of a mic preamp the darker it will sound, the higher the impedance the brighter it will be and more responsive to transients. Just to clarify CMRR is the measurement of balanced lines. There is always a positive signal on one cable and a negative or opposite polarity signal on the other. The idea is that anything common to both wires will eventually get canceled at the receiving end. The degree of cancellation at the receiving end, however, is dependent upon a number of factors relating to the integrity of the circuit involved. CMRR is a spec that defines to what degree common signals are canceled at the input of a balanced system.
I own and use Universal Audio equipment everyday but with every year that passes the UAD line of interfaces falls behind the competition. Sure they have really nice plugins but the fact remains that even compared to platforms that use DSP based tracking solutions like Avid's new Carbon interface for Pro Tools which has 18 DSPs and when comparing the power even with an Octo card is Universal Audio is a dismal option. Sure if all you need to record is between 2 to 8 inputs at a time then the Apollo line might be a viable option, but when you need say 16 to 20 inputs during a tracking session then the lack of DSP power is apparent. The Apollos only ship with 6 DSP Max which forces the end user to buy a satellite to combine DSP just for tracking. But for a hobbyist or a singer songwriter it's a blessing. But the cost of entry to a 20 year old hardware DSP platform is abysmal when compared to the competition.
