He removed Persian writings (so that they would not read books in Ottoman). He made the call to prayer in Turkish and called the prophet (badly) the son of Arab. He banned the pilgrimage. Those who came after him did the same, banning the headscarf and veil. They hanged the Muslim Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, who resisted them.

Instead we see examples of Serbians, Hungarians, Romanians, Greeks being allowed their own autonomous states with their own rulers and princes under Ottoman protection and security.

Daniel, you have explained the very right issue, the Khilafah( responsible for implementing Islam internally in the state and carrying the dawah for Islam to the other states). The collapse of Ottoman Empire was expected and inevitable, since all the previous Caliphates have collapsed as well, including the first Caliphate, founded by Muhammad himself, so I'm rather surprised that Muslims never have a plan-B when the collapse is happening, and instead their whole faith rely on those doomed Caliphates.
The Ottomans during the time of Abdul Hamid II were well and modernizing until the young Turkish liberals started rebelling and had him dethroned.

One of the biggest mistake that my ancestors, rulers of khanate of Bukhara, Khiva, Qoqan made is not uniting against colonizer Russia. They had more power than Russian empire, unfortunately, war between three led to colonization of our lands(current Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizistan). Now, we should not make the same mistake.
