Love the pond series ! Make we want to go fishing... I miss Sweden fishing style. Full stop ! Can we have an update on the small cabin in the wood life during summer please ?
@@TheWoodedBeardsman awesome ! Can't wait for some bushcrafty catch and cook at the cabin. J'espère que vous trouverez une solution pour le problème d'oxygénation de votre étang, superbe projet. Was two weeks in northern Sweden visiting a friend, looks like Canada ! Throw your lure into every random lake with proper depth and with almost each cast, you get a perch. Now back to Switzerland, fishing is waaaay different, too many fishermen and well, laws...
I'm liken you pond ideas. Hope you get your aeration sponsorship. That's what kept our small pond going all winter kept the ice from closing the pond as well. Good luck a Beard family and farmer man 😁
You may want to get some "Water hyacinth " These plants are great at helping a water gardener naturally discourage and starve algae, keeping the pond from turning green. The floaters also help by providing some shade, which in addition to helping to prevent algae growth, also benefit the fish in the pond and keep the pond cooler. They grow rapidity.
Great pond series, and looking forward to seeing how things keep progressing. I suggest you take a look at adding some algae eater type fish. We consulted a fisheries manager for a pond we stock in Illinois and they recommended adding Triploid Grass Carp. They’re a sterile variant of White Amur carp and therefore you wouldn’t risk having them populate your pond on their own. I believe they’re most effective in the first few years of their growth and will eat algae like it’s going out of style. Good luck!
Great video!! Those minnows are small creek chubs. Don't be surprised if they get out of that cage, they will jump out of there if they feel trapped and stressed so you may want to put a lid on the cage if you want to keep them from escaping.
I love your pond series as I enjoy all your uploads. I particularly enjoy your message always of respecting food and using as much of the animal or fish as possible. Possibly the minnows will eat the algae in your pond as well as a food source for your trout. Great video again, full stop. Looking forward to your next video. You guys rock from a female supporter of your channel.
Really enjoying the pond vids. I've been managing my buddies farm pond for years. It can't support trout but we have quality Bass, Crappie , bluegill and channel cats. We have an in and out flow though. Keep em coming. Thanks
I see this pond getting larger and deeper! It’s going to be fun watching it’s evolution. I can tell you’re excited and I don’t blame you. I’ll never see it in person and I’m excited too! Best of luck brother!!!
What a great idea! You've got a tremendous endeavour there on your hands w/ revitalizing the pond. But, what a great idea! Lol...the Three Stooges routine with the roll of hdwr cloth...(!) Best of luck, Buddy...
Hey Chris, another great video, thank you! As a marine biologist and having worked in small scale aquaculture I am loving this series. My recommendation for helping address the algae problem would be to collect fresh water mussels (or clams as you have called them in the past) and build a population of them in the pond. They are filter feeders which will eat your algae problem and they health will provide an overall indication of the health of your ecosystem. Thanks again!, You friendly Maine marine biologist
Bruce Hansen check out outdoor weeklys pond stocking videos they are a little different butt they also have a more ecosystem building system instead of trout though he had bass because he was in north Carolina
I’m really enjoying this series on your pond. As a kid we would get so much on trapping around the pond. Critters looking to get at the fish. It was full of sun fish and my brother and I ice fished and caught and loaded it with pike and had a blast. They grew enormous very quickly...my dad was pissed lol. Great series sir!!!! Cheers Wood Beard!
My buddy is clearing his old 12 acre pond of flat heads because he wants walleyes and yellow perch in there along with the bass blue gills crappie the flat heads were added 30 years ago top control the bull heads that took over the pond ! They did it and spawned and became to number 1 predator of pond. We’ve taken out in 3 years over 5000 pounds of giant flat heads 2# too 70# huge fish but we catch many 9 pound bass we’ve caught many walleyes 3# too 10# there’s huge gills and crappie and lots of small to medium fish also it seems super healthy! We’re hoping by taking out the flat heads we won’t disturb that balance! But we added Minnows for feed for walleyes and perch you can buy them by the pound here from fish dealers ! Leeches also which maybe a good idea for your pond ! But we’ve never caught a yellow perch yet in the years following the stocking we see them on the fish cameras while ice fishing ... we also added green sunfish as a forage !
Man, that's my dream to one day have some 3-5 hectares of land by the banks of a river or lake here in Poland, and also play around like that! Full stop!
i use barley straw to help keep the water in my koi pond clear. Koi fish can do alright in a mossy pond like that, but i have found that they breed more readily, and seem less stressed if its clearer. try getting a few bales of barley straw and drop em in the pond. as they break down they will clear up the algae naturally and without doing any damage to anything else. i would definitely get out as much as you can first, that way you don't lose a bunch of fish when the algae dies. it takes a little while for the straw to start breaking down and doing it's thing, but once it starts it should last for about 6months or so, and barley straw is relatively cheap. you can also buy the barley straw composted tea, and that will work right away, but its more of a 1 time thing for when you have a big bloom, and it's a lot more expensive.
I'm really loving this series. This is a project I never even knew I would be interested in. I'm looking forward to seeing how the aeration and algae management goes. And now, I think I need to stop watching UA-cam videos and go be productive like you guys!
Since you have willows ... in Spring, take LONG cuttings 2-3-5 feet of willow branches with (at least) 3-4 node length of leaves. Strip off the bottom leaves of the cutting, and push into the soft mud riparian shoreline. One could even do this with river mud in buckets at the house, and make a bucket nursery of willow cuttings that will root up. Then transplant along the shoreline. Like sugar cane, fig trees, wild raspberries, and blackberries, they will grow roots from any nodes buried in growing soil. You can create a new shoreline willow forest for advanced shading along the pond. One wonders with all the softwood birch, aspen, poplar, and cottonwood, if these would also be an option. Maybe even a little Rootone dipped on the cuttings will also cause them to root up. Robert of YT Bulgarian Organic Homestead did a video on this - making a future homestead forest for livestock forage and firewood. The easiest way to make a forest.
Keep up the pond series, it’s a part of sustainable living. I know a Chinese restaurant that stocks a pond with fish that they serve at their restaurant.
For aeration you can use a pond pump to run water through a sediment filter you construct from a barrel or trough. You pump the water into the trough, filter it through sand and gravel. Then the water is allowed to drop into the pond filtered and aerated. It will get rid of suspended algae not matted into rafts or sheets on the bottom.
I've watched the video from 0 to 100%. Checked. Since I've missed episodes 1,2 and 4 I'm going to youtube travel back in time to episode 1. Bon apetit. I'm going to enjoy my meal while watching your videos.
Have you thought about throwing the frogs in with a handful of pellets? Start to associate different feeds together. Also, there’s a battery powered aerator you could use to make sure your minnows don’t die when transporting them. I think it’s called a bubble box.
For the algae I would try a throw net. You would catch a few fish you can immediately return to the pond. The throw net can get the top water as well as the sunken algae. Its a good skill to have to get bait as well.
such an awesome pond man im so envious! thats my end goal eventually is a piece of land that either already has a smallpond or brook running through it or enough land to build a little pond but preferably if there is a small spring creek going through. That tiny spring brook in the woods behind my home where i dammed it off for a pool for my dog to swim in now has over 2 dozen brook trout 3-8 inches And i never stocked it!! always knew there was the odd trout after a heavy rain when a sea trout would come up from the salt But i guess they must have been spawning there now over last couple years! better than nothing! lol
You 100% need some good water flow.....I saw a comment talking about creating a brook to filter your water.....it will be some work, butt is a great idea! If you can pump water from the pond to a higher elevation, and then get it flowing back into the pond, you can create really good biological filters along the rout. There are great plants that will suck the nitrogen out of the water and stop the algae bloom. You have lots of nutrients right now supporting the algae....with all the new fish there may be additional ammonia, which breaks down into nitrogen, which feeds the Algae...be sure to include a couple of settling ponds along the way, and a couple of small water falls to provide oxygenation....:)
you need a fountain pump in the middle of the pond it will make the water have a continuous flowing movement and that will keep the algae situation under control
Good luck getting the adult fish to eat live foods. Minnows sound like a good plan. Starve them just a little, nothing mean, then give em a crap ton of minnows. I mean ALOT. And yes, skim that pond and get some air in it. Wish you all the best.
I've seen a number of lochs (lakes) in Scotland where barley straw was used to clean up the water. A fair number of bales were used in each. Part of the problem was caused by run-off of fertiliser in the water from agricultural fields near by. Good series. 👍👍
When you set your minnow trap use cat/dog food in pantyhose. If you use bread the will eat until the dye. And then your bait is reusable. Also grass carp can clean your pond and won’t bother the trout! Good luck to you and your pond!

You could put one or two grass carp in your pond and it would help a lot with the algae and grass but I think you should also do some fishing videos with your kayak that would be awesome
The marina we cut the grass at uses electric prop units that move water which causes the algae to move around and clear the area for the boats. I think they could be adapted to corral it in one area so it can be netted easily. Not sure what they are called but they are purposefully built for this. I think some carp would do the job as well but I believe the may harm the rest of the fish.
