-- I was looking through an old hard drive and found a folder from 3 years ago that I had never edited into a video.
It's very interesting to see the difference in filming, quality, overall camera presence, and enthusiasm from then until now.
This shelter stood for a few months, I eventually tore it down and that summer I shot a small series i this location, you can watch that here. • The Bushcraft Campout.

Quite right Ray!! After leaving my first comment on this video I awoke one morning to a knock on my door. I let my Father in and he sat down in tears and told me that he'd just been to see his doctor and the doctor had confirmed that he had Lung Cancer. I'd not once seen my Father cry before that day. That day has changed not only his life but mine too. I now take him for chemo therapy but whether it's going to save his life and keep him with me for much longer...................it's all out of our hands now!! You never know what life will throw at you next.

This quiet, slow pace is actually kind of meditative. One of the things I like about the channel is actually that you work in different tones. You'll have an upbeat vid with a bud, or family, and then a quieter goal-oriented vid. This second type is way better for just putting on when I'm around the house. It's like a window to a backyard forest I don't actually have. Kudos

So I've never been one for the outdoors, but my husband started watching you for fun and started buying all sorts of gear that you use in your videos. It became a big joke between us every time a package arrived/arrives (they are still coming). I started watching you with him and you have caused me to rethink my views on camping! haha! In the past week we have created 3 of our own videos documenting our little family adventures and wannabe bushcraft skills. You inspired us! LOL!! I'm actually uploading them to my channel as we speak....

Hey Joe, just want to say thanks for getting me back into camping. Used to do tent camping at some remote places but mostly provincial camp grounds. It' been years since I have done it. Aired out the tents last year and they basically disintegrated in the sun lol. After watching your videos I bought a new tent, backpack, and numerous hiking and camping equipment between March and April of this year 2018 from various stores...Canadian Tire & Walmart in Brockville, Pro Bass Shop in Vaughn, Atmosphere In Kingston, Sail in Ottawa. I seem to be addicted right now in this stuff. My 5 year old son is really excited to go camping for his first time. He asks me every day if we are going to set up the tent. Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me to get back into it.

It's great to see how the video quality has changed, Joe. If you have more I am sure would all like to see them. If you are up for it Joe I'd like it if you could describe potential hazards some of us should be aware of if we attempt to do what you are doing. I'm sure you would be helping several of your subscribers. As an example of some of the hazards I have come across are the wild animals I have to contend with. In my neck of the woods ( northern Ontario ) i often meet up with wolves, black bears and the odd cougar. Also have to deal with swarms of black flies and mosquitos. Then there's bogs and marshes etc.
The reason I mention this is because I know of people who died because they weren't prepared when they went into the bush. As you mention in the video you want to teach these skills. You are an inspiration to all us subscribers, Joe. I leave it up to you to decide. Great job so far!

Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, "Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"
The birch says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, "Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"
The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, "It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in."

Eleanor Fleming 5 minutes ago "Was this meant to be a joke because no one is laughing to be honest it is just really confusing"
Joe's channel has been around a really long time, is well respected, and is a bit of a "family channel" and I'm no prude, but do you really want to sit around the family dinner table, and discuss this topic with your kids. So, Eleanor, I don't know what flavor you are but I really don't think you need be "CONFUSED" about it, And actually, if you really are confused, maybe you aught to talk to someone about that. Regards all. Again Joe, I think you run a great channel.

none so blind… joe drinks too much to call this a family channel. stop whatever and really think hard, what is the most abused substance that will be the end of mankind if allowed to run rampant? alcohol. look at Russia. people just cant handle it. the little girls see daddy drink and they learn their life lessons. aaand before you respond : as those that will not see.

Personally I prefer just seeing you build the shelters best. Your series on building the winter camp is wonderful. I would love to see you expand the shelter and make the walls more solid and perment. I know it's 6 hours away so it will be a little while before you get back.

Would love to see a long term shelter build. Something you could (assuming availability of resources) spend a season in. Made of natural materials.
    Always enjoy the vids, Joe.
    Take care.

This has an old throwback feel to it for sure. Not a bad thing, i watch your videos along with Shawn's to relax and learn. The background noise in this video was actually extremely soothing and calming. Cool video to post, can't wait for the next one

Love the old video Joe! Keep it up! you are a real inspiration to a lot of people my self included. You can really see the change in your style and shooting quality, your comfortably in front of the camera really shows. Also what ever you need to do to keep growing your business go for it. I came for the bushcraft and I stay because of your personality. Just keep pushing!

Joe I love watching your videos, for a novice outdoor person the information you share is helpful. We take a family vacation to the great outdoors (the sequoia national forest) every summer, and this past summer I borrowed a few of your bush craft ideas. Now we still use tents, but we bought new sleeping bags since I was unaware that they have different kinds for different elements! Well Joe keep up the great work!!!!

I liked the quieter, more serious side to this video, Joe. Different from your more current, fun and relatable videos. Each style/ tone of your videos has their place. Kind of cool to mix things up. Thank you.

    Hey Joe.
I'd say that vid was 4- 5 years old. iv'e seen some of your older vids before, and you used to wear the army surplus store combat trousers a lot in your early vids. before you went all hi tech purpose built clothing.
i've never yet managed to get a response to one of my comments from you. but i'll try again. The first vid of yours i watched was 'Camping with a kid'. That was a work of genius, mainly due to the silly things Emerald was saying. its the kind of humour only another parent can appreciate.we have a daughter we think is pretty much the same age. born July 2011. it was like watching our own child with a Canadian accent.
Me and a friend of mine are in the process of starting our own youtube channel. it will be based largely around camping and outdoor stuff involving our children, as not many people do that on here. i can understand why they might not want to broadcast there kids, but we are prepared to risk the possible negative comments.
i did contact your new friend Scott via the comments section, i just wanna check. You did say you would do 'bike packing', in front of witnesses? cos that i wanna see.
Keep up the good work, looking fwd to the next one.

I've learned a lot just in the few videos I watched. I never know about the Canadian knot, how to make a bed, and a few other tidbits. I love watching you build shelters for sure.

Hey Joe recently found your channel a few months ago and I’m still hooked! I work at a military school in California and our 10th learn all about survival training. Shelters, Fires, tools, and food/water. You’re videos have definitely been a core source of information for us without being able to go into the field. Keep doing what you’re doing buddy

You mentioned in this vid how you would like to inspire others to get out there and bushcraft. Wanted to take the opportunity to tell you ive been slowly working your bushcraft techniques into my backpacking trips and all my (much more experienced) backpacking buddies gave me a lot of shit. At least until the 2nd or 3rd time they had to watch me eat bacon for breakfast or steak on the coals for dinner. Several trips later, and now they are sending ME their bowdrill videos. Inspiration indeed. It has greatly enriched my trips. I definitely owe you a beer. :) Cheers Joe.

Joe, Thank you again for the escape from the winter blues. Because you asked, I'll take a shot at a few idea requests.
Would you explore ideas and experiences with other types of campfire setups? From a Dakota fire pit / smokeless fires, to a trench fire for grilling, to a self feeding fire, would you demonstrate if any of these are worth the time?
Hope to see you fishing again soon, love to see your instructions on cleaning / cooking with minimal equipment.
And that's my contribution to the idea can. Thanks again.
