cheated of a share of the nectar by the devas who had taken help from Bali's forces in the churning of palazhi for the nectar. Bali attacked the heaven but was worsted by the suras. Bali was killed by Indra's thunderbolt. Suksacharya the guru of asuras (daityas) using his secret powers restored Bali and others back to life. In his quest to usurp Indra's kingdom Bali performed Viswajit yagna conducted by the brughus (Sukracharya and others ). Bali became invincible as a result and mounted attack on the kingdom of Indra. Indra and the other gods were advised by their guru Brhaspati to be in hiding and wait for a propitious time as he could predict that the brughus who got Bali the powers would themselves be the cause for Bali's downfall.
Bali later wanted to do 100 aswamefha sacrifices in order to be permanently on Indra's throne unchallenged. It was during such a sacrifice that Vamana reached the yaga shala. Sukracharya clearly told Bali that the diminutive brahmana was Lord Vishnu's avatar to deprive him of his sovereignty. Wholly respectful of brahmanas, and as one to preserve the noble heritage of his grandfather Prahlada, Bali was steadfast in honouring his vow.
As pre-ordained, Sukracharya cursed Bali to fall from his position and be deprived of all powers and grandeur.
Bali himself says that he was truly blessed by the Almighty just for the bowing of head to touch His Lotus Feet that was yearned for .
