If you want a longer Doors song check out "The End". Not only is it longer, it will probably shock you a bit. My favorite Doors song is "Riders On The Storm" which you should listen to with headphones on, the lights and eyes closed. It will take you on a voyage to a different place.

Diane has already featured _Riders on the Storm_ in a previous video. Scroll back through the list to find it. It was her first exposure to The Doors, and she was very surprised at how chill it was. She expected something more of a rocker.

Diane, not only would the review of "The End" be good, since you have degrees in film, you should make sure to view APOCALYPSE NOW, if you haven't already. Lots of pop music of the 60's featured there. "The End" is an essential component of the film. Studying lots more in music could make your approach to film stronger.

Here in the US, in the days of AM radio, songs clocked in at 3 minutes or less (all but one of the songs on the Beatles album "Revolver" was in the 2-3 minute range) Billy Joel's song "The Entertainer" includes the line 'It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long, so they cut it down to 3:05" Radio edits were common...but once FM radio became popular, all best were off!

In the 60's, All cars only had AM radio that was mono. FM stereo started to get introduced into cars in the very early 70's, so before then, short mono songs translated best on AM radio. This song was off their first album. My personal favorites are off their second to last album, the Soft Parade.

I don't listen to the radio, but I like listening to hour long mixes. If there is a single song on Spotify and I don't know it or not in love with it or even a part of a song I'm not a fan of, I'll skip the song, but when it is an hour long mix I'll persist through a song I don't love to hear the rest of the mix. I like listening to music on vinyl because of the inconvenience of skipping a song so I'll listen to the whole side. I've found some songs I didn't know that I loved after listening to them a few times on a side of a record.

Radio stations wanted song ti be between 2 & 3 minutes, so they could fit in more advertising breaks. It's the way radio broadcast was structured in those days. Most music artists wanted their songs longer, but they had to make a living.
Much later, after years of experience & study, broadcasters changed, where longer songs were allowed.

While it was important for a band to have at least one track of an album to get airplay on broadcast radio, the bands of that time weren't as concerned about such things as the record companies who published their music. The Doors did release a number of successful radio singles, but the singles were sometimes cut-down album tracks. In 1967, F.M. radio wasn't a thing, so all stereo album tracks had to be remixed as monaural recordings for A.M. radio. The album tracks were always better, and sometimes longer.
The Doors albums always had tracks that were too long or too controversial to be heard anyplace other than your home, car or live performance.
Some examples of longer songs would be _The End_ and _When the Music's Over._ Both songs are at least as well known as any single release because their albums were everywhere.

I'm betting you would really like their song The Crystal Ship. BTW, they use to ban song for the silliest reasons in the '60s. Them's song Gloria was banned in Chicago for being suggestive because he said "she came up to my room. She made me feel alright. Same with the song Louis Louis because they couldn't understand the words so it must be dirty. It was tough for us back then.

Indeed -- it was edited because "she gets high" was considered unacceptable, so all we heard for years was "She gets" which made very little sense!

Back in the sixties if a song was longer than 2:59 it did not get airplay on AM radio stations. That was why if a recording on an album was longer they would edit a shorter version for AM radio play. And also for 45 rpm records. It wasn't until FM radio came along that those stations would play longer songs. Sometimes even entire album sides. Plus, FM stations could broadcast in stereo where AM could not.

Happy Wednesday to you Diane. If you haven’t listened to the song called In-A Gadda Da-vidda by Iron Butterfly, you should check it out, it is from the 1960s too. It is over 17 minutes long and was very influential on what became known as heavy metal. Rumor has it the name was supposed to be called In the Garden of Eden, but the title was supposedly misheard because the singer was high and slurred the words.

I agree, Diane should do an Iron Butterfly Ina gadda davidda reaction video. The music for that song is in a lot of U.S. TV commercials. Also, it's a great song, even if he slurred the words while singing it.

Good reaction love anything from the Doors. I was intrigued by your comment that most rock and roll songs are in some way a metaphor for drug use. It’s very true that drugs have been a theme and a problem throughout musical history. Jazz musicians of the 20s and 30s regularly used marijuana and dabbled in harder stuff. Point of the comment though is to direct you to some really good rock songs with very Anti Drug message. They are out there. Lynard Skynard’ “That Smell”, Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” and Stppenwolf’s “The Pusher” all classic rock jams with strong anti drug message. Even some songs everyone was sure were about drugs really weren’t (if we are to believe the groups that sung them” Tje Beatles all vehemently denied that Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” had anything to do with LSD as Peter Paul and Mary have always maintained that “Puff The Magic Dragon” was a children’s song about a little boy and his magical frien a dragon and not a reference to smoking pot.

So many good musical groups back then, too many to count. a couple U tube tunes I's recommend strongly > ' White Bird' by beautiful day - tangle wood (Boston ) . Iron Butterfly. ' in a Gadda ...' might be better in the LP version. it's 18 min. the song ' East West ' . by Butterfield Blues . and yes often songs were in 3 minute form. one reason I generally prefer live concert stuff - that's the type of music I like. Hendrix. Allman bros. Grateful Dead notably.

The Doors were a very "Theatrical" act in their concerts , but that side of Morrison also comes through in his lyrics . With your acting / theatrical background , I can see why you are attracted to them . But then , Morrison always did have a way with the ladies 🙂
