If you had competent candidates who were basing their candidacy on policy stances, wouldn't part of them debating each other also be them fact-checking each other? The problem we're seeing is these debates have in some ways gone beyond policies.
That's a lot for the candidates to have in their heads at any given point in time, especially when you talk about quoting candidates statements from x years ago. It's not like the moderators are actually the ones fact checking themselves. It's behind the scenes people doing the checking and relaying that information to the moderators, I would think.

What is the issue with fact checking? Simply do not tell bs and you’re fine. All I’ve read here are excuses for a behavior that is unacceptable on either side. As an independent voter, it seems interesting the affiliation that applauds and defends the lack of fact checking and the affiliation that is upset that it will not be present… it really says a lot. Crime has not gone down. The moderator was going by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting system. Big cities with high crime rates like New York and Chicago have not been forwarding their crime data to the UCR over the last few years. Reporting to UCR is not federally mandated. Only some states have laws mandating it. That means the FBI's estimates are artificially low. The Bureau of Justice Statistics released its National Crime Victimization Survey not long after the debate, and it found that crime victimization across the country is up 37% over 2020. This is a survey that asks people if they've been victimized in the last year. A 37% increase over their figures for 2020. Americans are NOT imagining things. Crime is up. There's also the matter of apathy. If I'm victimized and know nothing will be done about it, why would I even bother to report it to police? But I WILL report it to a survey taker over the phone.

It shouldnt be the job of the moderator to fact check the debate. The debaters on the stage should do that themselves. If you go back and watch debates in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s the moderators asked their questions and stayed out of the answer, unless they wanted more detail.

I don't care about the poll and at this time, I don't trust any promise from any candidate but in a debate, I would like to see hard and intelligent follow up questions to each candidate and I would like to hear logical and reasonable answers from them, not the usual word salad that we've been getting from Kamala. No. The majority propblem is this society just going off of what they hear and not educating themselves thoroughly. It would seem with ease of access did not come the ability to study better. Yet another thing that sounded good on paper, and failed in practice.

If you had competent candidates who were basing their candidacy on policy stances, wouldn't part of them debating each other also be them fact-checking each other? The problem we're seeing is these debates have in some ways gone beyond policies.
That's a lot for the candidates to have in their heads at any given point in time, especially when you talk about quoting candidates statements from x years ago. It's not like the moderators are actually the ones fact checking themselves. It's behind the scenes people doing the checking and relaying that information to the moderators, I would think.

Fact checking is necessary
It isn’t a journalists or opinion pushers job to call out candidates on their statements. If the candidates are properly prepared and knowledgeable they should be able to call out each other. Robby is right.
I would prefer having no moderators. Let the candidates ask their own questions like the lincoln douglas debates. 5/5/2 seems about right. 5 minute statement of policy or criticism of opponent. 5 min response w 2 min rebuttal. Then the other person gets a chance to do the same.

The moderator was going by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting system. Big cities with high crime rates like New York and Chicago have not been forwarding their crime data to the UCR over the last few years. Reporting to UCR is not federally mandated. Only some states have laws mandating it.
That means the FBI's estimates are artificially low.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics released its National Crime Victimization Survey not long after the debate, and it found that crime victimization across the country is up 37% over 2020. This is a survey that asks people if they've been victimized in the last year.
A 37% increase over their figures for 2020. Americans are NOT imagining things. Crime is up.
There's also the matter of apathy. If I'm victimized and know nothing will be done about it, why would I even bother to report it to police? But I WILL report it to a survey taker over the phone.

I don't care about the poll and at this time, I don't trust any promise from any candidate but in a debate, I would like to see hard and intelligent follow up questions to each candidate and I would like to hear logical and reasonable answers from them, not the usual word salad that we've been getting from Kamala.
