Registration is open for My FAFSA & Financial Aid Academy!
This virtual program begins September 1st 2022 and runs through May 31st 2023. But spots will fill up fast!
There are three different levels of service in the Academy for you to choose from, depending on how closely you want to work with me throughout the senior year financial aid process.
✨BASIC, PLUS and PRO.
Last year the PLUS and PRO levels filled up and I had to cut off registration early as I limit the number of families in these levels so that I can provide quality services to them.

How The Financial Aid Academy was born. 🤩
When I started this business I quickly realized that 90% of my clients and people reaching out to me for questions were parents of high school seniors navigating the overwhelming financial aid process for the first time.
Often times they came to me in sheer panic 😫when the financial aid offers rolled out not knowing how they were going to afford college tuition.
_________________
So I set out to create an AFFORDABLE coaching program specifically for them that spanned the entire senior year to help them:
✅ Get prepared before that time came so there were no surprises
✅ Better understand the financial aid process and feel less stressed navigating it
✅ Fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile (if required) correctly and avoid common mistakes that could cost them thousands of dollars
✅ Stay on track and not miss important deadlines
✅ Find colleges their families could
✅ Access all the financial aid they are entitled to
✅ Maximize their financial aid offers
✅ Feel more secure and confident while having direct access to a professional who has worked in the financial aid field for over 30 years.
I have helped hundreds of families navigate the overwhelming financial aid process and get the best aid offers possible through my Financial Aid Academy.
On average, families who enroll in the Academy receive an additional $25,000 in financial aid over the course of 4 years on top of their regular financial aid offers! 💰

Hi Tina, thank you so much for this information. I'm set to do a FAFSA Presentation for my High School Seniors and their parents and this information really helps. Keep up the Amazing work.
Girrl... thank u so much.. I didn't attend college so I really didn't know how to help my son and I'm so glad I found this video.
Amanda Smith you are so welcome! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
Every college has a Financial Aid department on their website with information on how to go about applying. Then your son can go to or call the financial aid office of the college he wants to apply to with any specific questions. The FAFSA is online for free. If you have problems filling it out there is a phone number you can call for help. I am sure they answer the questions of thousands of people every year filling out the FAFSA. Try everything yourself first. You probably won't be surprised to find out that you can do it without paying anyone a dime.
@@TheFAFSAGuru Are you still avaiable?
Any college financial aid office will walk you through everything for free
Exactly! You are 100% correct! No one needs to pay anything to apply for financial aid.
Exactly!
Brandon Harris of course there are free services out there...that I often recommend to people. I provide a service for people who are looking for more In depth guidance that want to work one on one with someone who has more time to devote to them than overloaded financial aid counselors at have. I have worked in the field for many years and have seen first hand the needs of families that often go unmet because they can’t get the time they need. Not trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes here just want to provide a service for people that want more than people at the 800 numbers and financial aid offices can give them 😉
@@TheFAFSAGuru A lot of times I've met with student workers at the financial aid office and they give me the wrong information. If people are willing to pay someone who they trust is knowledgable, why not.
Ok so Do I have to have my classes set up before I start financial aid or do this first

Secret 3 really only works at most schools if you have circumstances such as a loss of income or some medical bills, and even then it is no guarantee. It doesn't work just because you got bills and the aid package ain't enough money.
I would say the number of schools reserving some aid to just help with "appeals" would be fairly small, and certainly not if you are at a community college or state school. Secrets 1 & 2 are spot on. Secret 3 should be how to search and find private scholarships, scholarships in your community, etc. And don't get scammed by paying for scholarships. Otherwise, good advice. :-D
Just discovered your channel thank you for the tips
You are so welcome!
Fafsa only gave me loans when I have a ton of friends way better off than me that got a ton of money
FAFSA is only the application for financial aid from the government. And a guideline for the university you are applying to. It could be your friends received grants and scholarships from other sources. Check with your Financial Aid office to see if there is more money you can apply for.

Yanderyn Shoup Can you elaborate a little more? Do you currently go to a private college or private high school?

Hi Tina, If my parent's income will be less in 2019 calendar (less than 2018 tax year), do you recommend we contact each school's admission office (email or call) and let them know that the income on next year's fafsa form (2019 tax year) will be less? My mother is separated and child support will stop as i turned 18 this year (i'm a senior in High school). I think you mention in one of your videos that the schools may reconsider EFC/ eligibility (we think we would be eligible for PELL grand next year as we did not qualify for it with 2018 income data). Thanks!

So I am going back to school and had to quit my job to do so (I travelled for work, hard to attend class in person if I'm on the other side of the country). I plan to appeal when mine gets returned, as it used the 2019 tax returns and I made way too much to get any sort of grants, scholarships, etc. However, I have a lot in savings and investments outside of retirement. Lily Greaney thanks for sharing! A lot of colleges will offer free assistance they just get bogged down and sometimes aren’t as accessible but absolutely everyone should check in with their colleges to see what they can offer for help for sure!

What if I have no money in my account and I’m a student
Would they still check for your savings even if the student’s asserts are skipped on the form? I didn’t originally know that the asserts included savings and I do have some, but am now worried fafsa could check for the amount regardless.
IF you are able to skip the student assets...then it doesn't matter if you have money in the bank.
There's a business I want to start and I'm afraid too because I don't want it to affect my fasfa since I'm attending a university where my fasfa didn't even pay half of my tuition.
My fafsa is barely anything, not like my family has money to pay for it, but if you wanna start the business, do it now (especially if the market is fright) so you can pay off your debts sooner than later
need to become a Alaska Native counselor for my Alaska native friends as a counselor. AMEN Brother.
What about finally aid appeals?
Every school is different with how they award aid and these "secrets" may not always be beneficial. Schools with Institutional methodology look tend to have more institutional aid to give out, so they look closer at factors the FAFSA doesn't consider, while Federal methodology schools primarily award federally-based aid with some more limited institutional aid.
Also, schools have FAFSA days for free and you don't even have to attend that school. You can always go to your Financial aid office for help with these steps. With the Data Retrieval Tool now, unless you have specific circumstances preventing you from using it, the rest of the FAFSA is basic information.
Exactly. These are points she neglects to discuss, but that are important, like with her third "secret".
@@chrissypacheco9635 I often wonder if people who discuss these topics actually have professional experience and just don't stay up to date or they are just saying what they believe to be true based on limited experience...
I just submitted my application yesterday, I was hoping to start school this winter in January, I guess is too late?
Francisco Cano no it’s not too late you can get financial aid for Jan 2020 still
1) Do FAFSA before 1 October of any year for EARLY advantage of funding.
2) Students to transfer any/all ASSETS ($ in the bank 2 their parents); FAFSA will charge students 20% of their income vs. 5.54% charged to parents. FAFSA does not look at the parents house or retirement under assets.
3) Appeal your award letter from college; not enough money to pay for their needs, write letter and appeal asking for more aid; FAFSA doesn't take extenuating circumstance into consideration. Send
Dear office, I took a pension loan and deposited it into court-blocked child performer acct. Signed, idiot. :(
Hi Fasa Guru. I have two question. 1- If the parent and the student are dependents on a older sibling's taxes. Do the student submit the tax information of the person who claim them as a dependent on their fasa?
2-If a student is over 21 and pays for their own housing and all personal needs with no financial assistance from their parents, why do they still need their parent tax information on the fasa application?
I’m sorry I didn’t understand the last one. What’s an award letter?

what if we have a child enrolled in private school with tuition of $10k per year? I don't believe they take that into account? Will they if I cite it as a reason for appeal?
Tell something about the css profile too🙂
Madiha Maqbool its basically for private institutions. They have member schools. Go to the college board website scroll to the bottom. Click on css profile and look up the member schools. Unless you plan on applying to a member school there is no need to fill it out.
It is correct that the home you live in as your primary residence is not count as assets, unless, here's the part she forgot to mention, but that many students lose aid on is that, if part if your primary house is rented that part IS counted as assets AND must be reported on the FAFSA.
Chrissy Pacheco yes you’re absolutely right! So let’s say you own a duplex and live on one side then you would only count half of the total net value. Thanks for clarifying!
I cant get to my FAFSA

If you go to fight you’re faster you have to write down how much you put into your retirement and now that’s going to count because I was going to do that because I wanted to try to get more FAFSA and I was told I had to write down every Patty I put into my 401(k) and my other retirement plan so I do not recommend to do that you are a professional you would’ve known this I live in Massachusetts
If there is no mention of PELL grant amount in EFC section at end of FAFSA online form (after submitting), does that mean no Pell grant will be awarded (for 2020-2021 college year)
Aziz Ucmakli yes that is wheee you get an idea of whether or not you are Pell eligible so if it’s not listed your EFC did not fall within the qualifying guidelines.

Heidi Gonzalez You can fill out the FAFSA using an estimate of your parents tax information instead of linking to the IRS you just put the figures in manually and submit it then when your parents file their taxes you can go in and make a correction and update the tax information with accurate info

Hello. I retired at 53 due to my plant closing in 2019. In 2020 I pulled out a chunk of cash from my 401k to pay off my car and motorcycle. My 18 year old is going to college in 2022. I hear that it's best to do fafsa early but I'll have to use my taxes from last April and that makes my income look 4 times as what it really is now ( collecting a pension). Should I fill it out now or wait til I file my taxes next year when it'll reflect financial reality?
FAFSA opened this month. You have to use 2020 taxes even if you wait to file 2021 taxes because this review is based on 2020
If you are a single parent then you don’t have to put the other parent.
an inflated AGI due to a one time retirement distribution is considered a special circumstance and you need to report it to the Financial aid office, and they can recalculate your EFC and
adjust your financial aid package.
Super helpful..i work in higher education...btw..ever thought of going lighter with your hair?
we own two houses the first house is under my name, the mortgage is paid off and it is our primary residence, the second house is under my husband's name we using part of the house (we live there too)and the other part is rented out to help us pay the mortgage on it, how do we find out the value of the house if we still owe our lender almost half the value of the house?
If you own 2 houses one would think you could afford to pay for your own education and let someone less fortunate use it.smh
Hi I use to go to a community college I got fafsa for 2 semesters but I failed my classes. I’m on my own I’m 22 would there be any chance I can get help in attending school?
Barbara Dominguez Hi Barbara are you wanting to go back to the same school or a different one… If it’s the same school they might’ve placed you on academic probation duty or grades which means it might not be able to access financial aid at that school until you successfully take a couple more classes… I’m happy to chat with you more about it and set up a consult call if you would like

Ka Ri Na Yes you should put dependents because you were providing the care and in the section that says did someone give you money or help you pay your bills you would list the amount there of your portion of bills he helped pay
@@TheFAFSAGuru Thank you, so much I really appreciate you.
FAFSA could cover living expenses or not? How to apply for that? Thanks
melody N it all depends on the cost of the college and how much money you get awarded you don’t apply separately for it you just fill out the FAFSA
What kind of federal funds will benefit from completing the FAFSA early?
Exactly
Some colleges use the FAFSA to award institutional need based scholarships and the earlier you apply the better
Hoping you read these...? What happens after default?
you can't borrow a federal student loan, you need to get on a payment plan with the lender to get the loan out of default. Usually after 6-10 on time payments your loan will go back into good standing

Hello. I wanted to know something. I am 24 years old and I only made 25,924$ last year. I’m scared that I won’t get a lot of finacial aid. I still love with my mom, but fasfa considered me an independent. Help!
Hi, I have been following tip 2 and all the refunds I’ve gotten from financial aid have been deposited into my fathers account. How long do I have to keep my money in his account? Also, if my parents happen to pass away, where would the money in the bank account go? I’m worried cause all my financial aid refunds are in my father’s account. (I don’t have an income btw)
If it is a refund from a parent plus loan, he has the option to have it deposited into his account on the PLUS loan app, he would have to change that on the application. The loan money goes to the school and credits your account first before the credit is deposited into his account
Hello! I'm planning on starting college soon however my parents and I have an estranged relationship and are refusing to let me use their tax documents I don't have my own tax history at this time. Is there a way I can still apply without my parent's taxes?
You would have to be legally emancipated to be acknowledged as being financially independent
You can contact the financial aid office and let them know about this estrangement. Each financial aid office evaluates requests for dependency override separately.
No necessarily, it depends on the college.
I need help right now. I am in calfornia. My son is a 17 year old senior with adhd. He just told me he wants to go college. I need help because calfornia is so expensive. I made 70,000 with husband and now we don't qualify for anything. Please help! The whole process is confusing . We file our taxes together.
Is it worth it to pay the CD penalty of around $21 to withdraw the $3,050 from my daughter's name and put it in an account of mine? Not sure. Small amount and then it will just show in my savings for the FAFSA.
This is not as cut and dry as she makes it seems. Other factors, such as family size, family income, assets, etc. also go into the formula for determining eligibility.
There are a lot factors that go into play in determining the expected family contribution from information that is on the FAFSA. Basically you can expect that any need-based aid she would receive from the college would be reduced by 20% of what she has in her savings account so in this case that would be about $600. And that’s if she’s eligible for need based aid.
If the student is using the parents income, do they still check the students savings account? I thought it went off the parents income?
they use both student and parent income and assets.
Is it beneficial to remove dad from custody paperwork and have child support paid in cash? Dad lives out of the country. Sees them maybe once a year and sometimes pays child support but when he does it's through the state system (per me). Is it better to show he's MIA- which is not lying.
even if he pays cash it would still be considered child support that would need to be reported on the FAFSA
I am 21 years old and getting married next year. When I apply next year will I get a substantially larger amount of aid since I will be considered independent?
Kelly Hays it goes off your status from 2 years ago. I am in the same boat.
Probably as you won’t be on your parents income and you’ll have less access to money as you’ll be on just you and your spouses
Does it matter if there’s money in my account if I didn’t fill out the assets for the student.
Nope, its your choice to skip it so unless your Financial Aid person asks for it nothing will happen! I work in financial aid just so you know lol!

I'm applying to go to a online College again and I guess my question with that bill of 3000 dollars how can get approved for grants or financial aid ? Just wondering the steps to take.
Hey Mekail! If your bill is just owed to the college(like they have a hold on your transcripts) it will not affect your FAFSA, but if you owe monies to the Department of Ed any school you apply to will not be able to award you any FAFSA until the bill is paid. I hope this help, I'm a financial aid coordinator also!
yes this is correct.
I have a huge concern of how fill up the FAFSA because I’m married but We don’t do taxes togueter and he is the owner of the house where we live in the FAFSA ask for my husbands income?
Maria solorzano if you’re married you need to put both incomes on the FAFSA unless you are separte really then would only list yourself

Hello! In order to do an apple you have to ask you Financial Aid office for a Professional Judgement some might even call it an Income Change Review. This is not something that everyone will qualify to do. But if you or your parents income is different then what it was in 2019 or 2020 your financial aid office has the power to reflect what your income looks like know on your FAFSA and that can help you qualify for more Financial Aid. You need to provide all the documents your FA office will ask for and make sure you are detailed and truthful in your statement! I hope this helps! I work in Financial Aid just so you know!
It is a good idea just to contact the university directly for FAFSA help.
Absolutely financial aid staff at all colleges are so helpful!
How long do you get to use FAFSA???
You have a 600% lifetime eligibility which means you have 6 years as a full time student (12 units) to receive any aid . Out of the 600% you have 150% to use at community college level the rest would be for university. I hope this helps! I work in Financial Aid just so you know!
I didnt file for 2020 will this effect how much i get if i dont give them tax return for 2020 ?
if you weren't required to file taxes then it shouldn't but if you were required to file taxes and didnt'...you will have to file them to get financial aid
