This video is a discussion of my design process in woodturning. For this discussion, I show the process I use to create some bud vase designs. It includes some helpful suggestions for getting started as well as working through design - treating it as an ongoing process rather than a one time shot. I hope y'all enjoy!

You have a natural talent not only for design but for teaching, as well. (I taught for 29 years). You are articulate, clear, and a good planner. Excellent "lesson plan!"
Thank you so much! Very kind of you 😊
Always start with a Harwood smile 😃 ❤
Your videos always have a different perspective. I think most others focus on showing how. Yours focus on why, but that isn't the only part. Whatever it is, keep doing it!
Try banks do much!! And thank you for watching 😊
My sketchbooks go back over 40 years. What amazes me is not how much they have changed (and they have) but how consistent my esthetic has been. What was interesting and attractive to me decades ago is still very much something I like.
Keeping these has provided a clear picture and an interesting journey.
As always a great video on a great subject.
That’s very cool!!! Hopefully I’ll have a few to look back on myself 🙂
And thank you
Your videos are always so educational and pleasant to watch. Thank you for the way you teach us
Ashley, you are a piece of work! Lol. Great name for a woodturner. Is it a chosen name? Your bother might be named Harley Ashwood? Seriously if I was your contemporary I’d be a full time fan. You have a wonderful way of teaching encouraging folks to self explore as much as following your teachings. Love your very pleasant looks including hair in a bun, librarian glasses and muscle definition in your arms. Yes I am flirting with you but with utmost respect. You got it going girl in all the right categories. Killer smile as well as deft tool work. Got to admire someone with lathe skills and wood knowledge. I’ve been turning for about 30 years and 20 as a semi professional. My day job was in public health which I didn’t want to leave but my wife and I hosted “open studios “ in San Francisco where I sold an average of 100 pieces per opening. So having some experience on my Oneway, I think I can spot a special talent when I meet one. Keep up the fine work. Gouge on!
I agree. Ashley is a sweet strong woman. I would be willing to set my lathe nearby. I feel she brings the better out of people and I enjoy people who do this.
Thanks for treating the subject of design. Sometimes I think turners focus so much on tools and techniques that design gets shelved. I'm primarily a spindle turner who appreciates good proportions and dimensions. Again, thanks.
Yeah, I agree. Glad you enjoyed it!
ashley I fell in love with your videos today I bought a lathe and already made a vase ^^
Love your work Ashley! Amazing to watch...
Thank you!!
My favorite design professor was fond of saying, "A designer thinks with his pencil."
(Though I don't think he came up with that bon mot himself, rather learning it from his teachers at the _Haute École de Joaillerie_ in Paris.)
Nice! 🙂
Very interesting video 👍
Thanks for sharing 🙏
I can't imagine how you set up shop, have the appropriate tools, machines operational skills and workspace!
Seeing is believing.
Take care.
Thanks for the video!
I watch your videos and think, well I'm gonna buy a lathe, I just honestly don't think I have the patience it would take. You have a gift
We’ll-presented and very helpful, Ashley. Keep ‘em coming!
Such amazing talent and amazingly beautiful works.
Very interesting hearing and seeing how you come up with your incredible creations, thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching!
A true teacher. Always great information in your videos. You're one of the reasons I finally purchased a lathe. My mission is to someday attend one of your classes!
I enjoy your lessons, and your showing your skill. I got started with "The Biggest Thing I ever Turned" and was it big! Your skill is scalable. That is amazing.
Wow qué hermosura de trabajo felicitaciones es todo una artista
You make it look so easy! Beautiful work 👍
Thank you
Very nice…! Thanks for sharing!
Another great video Ashley....Keep it up!
Great video kiddo, love to see gifted people show others their skills
Awesome, thanks for sharing
is so relaxing watch your videos.
Thanks!
Wonderful video. Love your smile.
Freehand sharpening like a boss.
Bela maravilha de peças parabéns
This young gorgeous woman is super talented.
Another enjoyable video. I couldn’t help but notice with just a little more work a couple of smaller vases would make a dandy duck call. LOL
Such a talented, beautiful young
I love these videos! I like to think writing works in a similar way, except the lathe turns slower.
The combination of Ashley’s accent and her slight awkwardness in front of the camera is so… winsome
🇧🇷💯👌muito lindo os teus trabalhos,eu também sonho em ter um torno assim 💎🙏
You are good young lady!
Ashley really enjoyed the video I’d like to ask you about your facemask and shield respirator I would like to know more about it if you could tell me where I can find one thank you very much and have a great day
Richard Raffan suggested black spray paint to keep the form out front... it truly works...
Yup- I’ve heard that
Ashley can you explain the exercise you were working on in your sketch book in the start of you video
No slow motion? Great video. Thanks for sharing.
What music do you listen too when turning?
😍
Another idea for research....look at pottery great shapes and designs....
Bagus
See ya later. Love and God Bless 🤗
Looks like a Hollywood space movie
Ashly...my son's have a jet 16 inch lathe
They want to upgrade to a larger machine
..that they can turn large pieces..
What kind of lathes do you run...do you know what the best machines made today are?
What about a source for used good machines...
We live in Hawaii...
Thanks
Frank
She’s turning on her Vicmarc lathe, but she also has Laguna lathes for her students. Vicmarc are Aussie made and can’t really be beat, but she also respects a bunch of other lathes. I’m sure she’ll tell you as much before too much longer.
@@BowlMakerSteve Thanks for the tips..what do you think of Harvey lathes....and also robust...American beauty...I think so far we are learning toward powermatic 3hp 4224b...
Would appreciate all you can say ...
I always look forward to your videos for clarity, but the sound on this one is sort of muddy.
How do you avoid the designs that disappoint you from discouraging you?
Im always surprised how much different small shape changes makes/breaks the design. If you don't get the shape right, it just looks funny.
Good 👍 luck girl
I hope to fiast your country soon
Woodglut comes with very useful plans with all the details you need.
Ashley Harwood? Ok.
First!!
Я давно понял что если женщина берётся за любое занятие-(пусть даже мужское)-она его делает лучше
I love your videos. However, I’m always thrown off by how scripted they seem to be.
