It made me SO happy to see you put on the chaps and use hearing protection.!
It looked like she had regular white bluetooth earphones in her ears, which as far as I know are not hearing protection. I use isotunes pro 2.0 bluetooth earphones and they have foam tips that are earplugs with a channel in them for the sound to go into the ear. They are osha approved hearing protection. Noise cancelling electronics are NOT hearing protection and do not stop the noise. Maybe I missed her wearing earplugs, or they make those tiny bluetooth earphones with tips that seal in the ear canal, otherwise she skipped the ear pro. It caught my attention. The chaps were a good idea.
Great to harvest from stuff going to landfill. That stuborn streak you say you have helps you push through when others would quit!
Always interesting to see behind the scenes, that was plenty tough, but if it yields the pieces needed, I suppose it's worth it, still a lot of work, thanks for sharing another aspect of your creations
I wouldn't be surprised if she made off with over $2-300 or more worth of bowl blanks just in this video.

I just realized that I have a continuously renewing cache of turning blanks in my back yard. Going to go have a look at that sugar maple I know is back there, and not too old. Three things you can consider adding to your wood salvaging kit are a cant hook, nylon wedges and a hatchet. Discovering these tools was a game changer for me in processing wood. If you wanted to go deluxe, add timber tongs and a pulp hook too. Then there are also Granberg’s milling attachments for chainsaws, I bet with these you could mill up the blanks in the lot and not have as much waste back at your shop.

I love your videos. I recently cut down a few trees in my yard that I plan on using them for projects. Trying to keep large pieces I used a come-along and tow strap to move them. Might be worth you trying in order to get undesirable pieces out of your way without using a lot of fuel cutting.

I have seen from your videos that you make a variety of stuff on your lathe. Bowls making up the majority of your projects it seems. Do you ever make mallets or do any woodcarving? Would be interesting to see a mallet design from your artistic perspective. 😃

The heaviest thing I've move with my dolly was a wood burning stove. Yes, they are an incredible tool. Thanks for Sharing! P.S. Everytime I went to haul something on a dolly with inflatable tires they were always flat! Yes, solid tires is the way to go!
I think I have the same green dolly she has. Hauling firewood last winter, the wheel busted and I just got around to turning a new hub on the lathe. How fitting
Ashley, a cant hook would make a lot of what you did in today's video easier. Also if take a 5' piece of rope, tie each end to opposite sides of the dolly, it makes holding blocks on the dolly.
Yeah I've got a 6 foot cant hook. You could roll some serious logs.

I cut some blanks from the trees that were cut down at the golf course I worked at over the summer in Birmingham, Michigan. Got some nice walnut, cherry, and ambrosia maple blanks from there. Had to get them quick before they were hauled away!
Bar / chain oil would quiet the squirrel in the dollies wheel bearings and lasts a long time.

Hi Ashley, for the love of your work is great. I was wondering what do you do to keep your fresh wood from cracking. I use a grinder to carve out the bowls I’m making and there is always some rot and cracking going on. I’m still new at this and have been filling the cracks and rot with epoxy. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I have been watching your Instagram account for some time now, your an inspiration for your craft.
I'm relatively new to turning but would like to upgrade from my bench top lathe to something that can do large bowls like the one at the end of your video. Any recommendations?
My neighborhood is full of Bradford pear. It is now a weed tree in Maryland. Mostly boring and lacking any figure.
Any tips for turning/drying the oak to keep it from cracking?
Any tips to help keep the saw from jamming with "shredded" wood?

I'm gonna have to get solid tires for my dolly. I seem to have to fix a flat at least once a month.
Nice video. This one felt relaxed and you seem to be enjoying yourself. You could mix in some more casual short vids, vlog style, to go with the more feature videos you put out.
Random stuff:
You should look into working with dovetail workwear, a badass women’s clothing line.
A big peavy will help roll those logs off a pile. A 60” will give you lots of leverage over the logs.
Better yet, I just slip my buddy who runs the crane truck some cash to meet me at the yard and load up some logs. Worth every penny.
A cant hook might come in handy. ;)
Suggestion- get a Peevee or Cant hook leverage is your friend -Tyler
That is a great resource for you. Have to admit, a little jealous. It must be like an Easter egg hunt. I would have trouble not bringing it all home.
You should look at investing in a cant hook. It’s a great tool. Did you notice in the direction that you were milling the log you got long shavings? It can clog up in the discharge area, but if you cut the other direction you get smaller chips that don’t clog. Just an observation. Thanks for your videos
I was going to say the same thing, but I was going to call it a peavey.
@@letmeseeit66 never heard it called that before, so I looked it up. The difference is a peavey has a point at the end of the tool for different uses where a cant hook does not. Learn something new everyday.
Do you seal the crosscut ends, or are you chucking it up as soon as you get back to the shop?

I've seen other videos where they cut the bowl blank by two cuts on either side of the pith, but you cut straight down the middle. Have you found that cutting off the pith isn't necessary?
I see Paul suggests Cant hook - they are good. How about 1/4 stick of TNT. Or best yet a mini-excavator so you can pick and choose.

Bradford pear wood should be in abundance. It's an invasive tree.
I think inflatable tires move easier over rough ground.

There are some woods, which I can't identify cause I simply don't know what it is, but it has absolutely beautiful color inside. The problem is I don't think you could turn it to make anything because the largest diameter of the trunk that I have seen is around 3 inches! Is there anything you can do with wood that small?

Good info, though you could have made moving the selected pieces out to cut up a lot easier on yourself. Use your vehicle to tow the pieces out, or a come along anchored to pull the pieces out and easier to manage. Personally, I think it's far too dangerous, and easy to get hurt trying to cut pieces that are stacked. I've seen too many people get a leg trapped, or they've simply fallen over when something moves. Be safe, keep turning.
I feel trees so I can mill my own lumber and cut fire wood... it gets interesting at times do to the fact that I want to turn most of it.

Damn, no wood goes to a dump here in a big city with lots of trees. Logs are either put into parks or sold at crazy prices in wood salvage businesses.

I don't know about rough ground, but I'd much rather be using a hand truck with pneumatic rather than solid tires on the sidewalks where I live.
wonder why these tree cutters don't have saw mills so they can cut the wood into useable lumber or fire wood

I'm looking at getting a chainsaw. I seem to be quite good at sporting free wood, but can't take full advantage of it, because of the lack of a chainsaw. What size blade would you recommend?
I really like a 24” bar. As long as you’re comfortable using it. I had to build up my strength for a while before I felt capable of handling it well.

that doesn't exist around here. that pile of logs is tens of thousands in fire wood. a tree service has people who cut firewood and sell the logs to them or do it themselves
