Jim Marshall was a true warrior, who quickly shrug off his mistake. He went on to have a great game, and the Vikings won that day.
And that's what they would never talk about people all they want to talk about is one negative thing
To his credit, for over fifty years, Marshall has handled the mistake with a sense of humor. He should be in the HOF.
The Hall of Fame is biased towards offense. Defensive players have a harder time getting in than, QBs, RBs, and WRs who put up fantasy football numbers.
He's been nominated just now.
He'll eventually be there.
@@PhilJHaast7695 thank you for using the correct form of the word, "biased". It drives me mad how dumb some people are, native English speakers, who will say something like "OMG they're so bias" or "I'm really bias". How are they that stupid? How is it possible to be that stupid? Like if you're confuse, you don't say "I'm so confuse". Or if you're tired, you don't say "I am tire". It just sounds like what a toddler would say. Yet full grown adult native English speakers say "I am bias" with no clue how dumb they sound.
He should be in the Hall Of Fame for that play alone.
The reason this is heartbreaking is because even though Jim is one of the top defensive ends of all time, this one play is the reason the HOF refuses to vote him in.
And because he was never 1st team all-pro. He made 2nd team all-pro 3 times. He did play 1960-79 as a DE never missing a game and starting all of them, his final year at age 42. He was good, but definitely not HOF worthy.
Baloney. Like the guy says at 1:14, he's one of the greatest players of his era. He was a terror.
Never missing a game for 20 years is HOF worthy for sure. He did this in an era with No concussion protocols or rules to protect players. If Jerry Jones is in the HOF them you G*d Damn better put #70.
toscodav nah when players like atwater and ken anderson arent in the hof then jim marsall shouldnt either. 2x Pb in 20 year career while playing for one of the best dlines ever. Eh
sadly true
In that game, he did not give up though. He played some good football even after that embarrassing safety. That's what you call a growth mind set. That is why he is a legend. A lot of cats would have given up, but not Jim Marshall! Kudos
Jim Marshall should be in the hof. he is a 6 time pro bowler, 4 time All pro player, and back then they didn't record tackles or sacks. one of the best defensive lineman of his era and 100% deserves a hof jacket
No, he played in two pro bowls.
@@uspalcatraz4355 it very easy to get on pro bowl today ;; nobody want to play in a pro bowl football 🏈 game today : being substitute very easy
this play is why he will never be in the hall
He was the 3rd best lineman on his team behind Carl Eller & Alan Page. I agree though, Jim Marshall should be in the Hall.
If you are not making mistakes, you are sitting on the bench of life.
0:06
Jesus. Does this guy smoke cigarettes or just eat them by the handful?
Kerorofan IKR
Sounding like Ernest lmao
00:24 that guy ate them
@@Raider24 good one
@@Raider24
I think he ate the guy that ate them
Put Jim Marshall in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But make him an upside down bust. (KIDDING!)
Seriously, he deserves a spot in Canton.
Just have him facing the wrong way.
Seriously, Jim Marshall might have gotten his bell rung on a previous play.
When he threw the ball in the end zone, I screamed 🤣🤣🤣
But get this, the Vikings actually won that game.
(4 Year Update: Y’all need to take a chill pill and take a hint about cool facts.)
Nobody cares lmao still part of the top 10 worst plays
A lot of people care.
TwinsFan11 lol really😂
yup look it up
played 20 nfl seasons played in 15 playoff games and was part of the most dominant defense in the nfl 1969-1976 Losing 4 superbowls is no big thing when you realize they GOT THERE 4 times
He should not feel bad, it happens. We all do something really really stupid at least once in our lives. They won the game anyway. No harm no foul.
No
Arizona Flutist Slot Wins not in front of thousands of ppl thoo :-)
I walked out onto a stage without my flute in front of 500 people once. I don't do anything but laugh at it now.
We all do something stupid MANY times.
Yeah I totally agree. With all the adrenaline he deserves a break, it’s impressive that he managed to end up with the football st all.
Jim Marshall is like, “why is no one chasing me?”
“I must be faster than I thought! Oh wait… oh no”
He fixed his mistake in the 2nd half and contributed to his team's win that game.
Jim Marshall should have already been in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Big Wrong way Jim Marshall you are My Super Hero....This one play put you in the History book and won't be
Forgotten BIG JIM!! Some mistakes
Will make you Poplar as long as football fans are still around...you're the Greatest player My Hero....
Your part of NFL HISTORY......
Jim's 80 years old now with a distinguished 20 year football career... Give him the "nod" ffs
Vikings history in a nut shell...
RedX165 go back to Minecraft
the vikings are one of the best teams!!! I should know, I'm a fan
@@tinymailbro7273But they've never won a Super Bowl.
Y'all leave Jim alone - the guy is a legend
Viking fans standards are so low
Dave Van Handel They had Favre once. They took Brett Favre from his retirement and the old Favre was their best player ever.
Mike McCourt he is not in the hall of fame
Mike McCourt don't worry man. I'm a Jets fan, and we had to deal with the Buttfumble.
yeah they still won he just got confused
0:46 God bless this man for his heroic acts in Nakatomi Plaza.
i think he has a concussion
Jakobi Meyers would like a word.
"is there anything worse than Jim Marshall running the wrong way?"
Your cigarette addiction, probably
I come back and watch this from time to time, because it's inspirational. He went on to have an exceptional career and should be in the hall of fame. Some times in life you screw up but you have to keep going.
Jim Marshall was a total Stud and all-time great. Rock on! One of the greatest in Viking football 🏈. Let’s go purple nation!
Made a huge gaffe, picked himself and helped his team win. That's who I want on my team!
Leon Lett would watch films like this for inspiration.
Leon "let 'em in".
Todays players could learn a lot about durability from Marshall.
"The score was tied, 7 all. When Franklin found he had the ball. He made a connection in the other direction and the crowd starting yelling some interjections!"
Jim Marshall once got pulled over later after his career was long over for driving the wrong way on a one way street. Once the police realized who it was they gave him a break laughed it off and said quote "you will always be going the wrong way Jim according to your playing days" True story
💀💀💀💀
My answer to Scott Ferrall’s question - listening to your voice
This got him on the celebrity panel TV game show 'What's My Line' in 1965, as the famous 'Mystery Guest'....
Paul Allen would’ve spontaneously combusted if he was on the call here.
This guy says is there anything worse than watching this guy run the wrong way....
Yes. Watching (listening) to you talk about the guy run the wrong way
"Is there anything worse than watching him run the wrong way in the NFL?"
Yeah, how about JR Smith running the wrong way in an NBA Finals game
😂😂😂
A superb player who went the wrong way but won the game
Jim Marshall was one of the greatest defensive players in history. He definitely should be in the Professional Football Hall of Fame. He has always treated that incident with humor. A great player and a class act. He was one of my boyhood heroes.
Jim Marshall is thinking, “why isn’t anyone chasing after me?”. Lol
Seems like such a nice guy feel bad for him
Mindset brings me here 😃
Jim the type of guy to sit on his TV and watch his couch.
He was the original Iron Man of the NFL, and this play is how they choose to remember him by? That's just cold
"Yeah! Alright let's go Marshall!!... Marshall?!!.... Where the hell does he think he's goin?!?"
You just know the Vikes will screw things up no matter what. Marshall was just ahead of his time.
Marshall came out in the second half and played really well, this sometimes forgotten one of the reasons how the Vikings won the game.
I can relate to Jim, I once scored on my own net in basketball.
Had a teammate on jv do that my sophomore year, but he missed the shot twice. Thankfully i was able to take the ball from him before he shot a 3rd time.
Also, hello from the future.
Can you imagine if one of his teammates tried to tackle him? 😜
We got a new one for the list, courtesy of the Patriots...
For a minute there, he forgot for with team he was playing for lol
49ers #77 is a savage lmfao "hey thanks Jim"
It makes a lot of sense now
Him picking the ball up and seeing the goal post ,and running towards it
he has a record for the most hilarious play ever
Jim Marshall was actually a good player. This moment is one of the most famous moments of all time. He should be in the HOF without a doubt. This play strengthens his case, imo.
This deserves number 1 over an interception this is basic square 1 shit
I've never understood why the wrong-way run is so hard to understand. He's a lineman. Nearly all fumbles he recovers occur at or behind the line of scrimmage. His instinct is to scoop and score. The wrong-way run came on a down-field fumble recovery. He was trailing the play and got disoriented. It wasn't a fall-on fumble, either. It bounced right up into his hands while he was on the run.
I was there that day, sitting in the west end zone seats highest row (to avoid the normal flying beer bottles tossed from others seated higher).
I was another happy 49er fan for that moment, but of course, we lost the game. Kezar Stadium holds a lot of memories for me as besides
watching the 49ers, I played many of my Lowell High games there as well.
Jim Marshall is the true Iron man of pro football. not Brett favre or even Joe Thomas. Marshall played 20 seasons as an undersized D-end without EVER missing a game!!! no one else can say that. and he wasn't a kicker you couldn't touch or. qb protected by 7 guys on every play!
28 fumble recoveries (most in the history of pro-football 🏈 )
Thanks for Jim marshall history
I watched the Purple People Eaters and loved Jim Marshall..
I sympathize with him, because every time I played electric football, my ball carrier turned around and ran the wrong way, scoring a safety for the opposition...
53 years ago today.
Let's be honest, the 1929 Rose Bowl guy must have been so happy to finally have a second member in the Wrong Way Club
Roy Riegel's wrong way run was more serious. Although he didn't score a safety for the opponent, the run did set up a blocked punt through his team's end zone for the safety and an 8-7 loss.
2:47 Credit to that guy for running the right way.
2:59: Thank's?
Why the apostrophe..?
lived in Minnesota in the '70's. Jim Marshall class act, one of my heroes, me a white Midwestern boy. I tell my son, you pick yourself up, you knock off the dirt, you get back in the game. Sport cliche, but so true in life. Character.
I have a framed vintage story/advertisement about Marshall's Lateral along with one on Boom Boom Billy Brown. Couple hundred takes both....
I would love to see a rb now, do what that one guy did in the black and white clip. Omg lol!
Jim Marshall - “I wanna be remembered for the rest of my life as a legend”!
Everybody - “Say less”
Lmao 🤣 💀
Embarrassing as this was, it only cost the team 2 points and a possession. There have been many mistakes with a more substantial impact on the score.
At the beginning the guy says, "there's nothing worse than that, you can't find a play more humiliating than that play"...Go and check on NFL memes...guys own teammate had to tackle him 😂😂😂😂😂
Only the Vikings
clay plane,
What does that suppose to mean lol?
clay plane 5-0... only the vikings(;
Giving away a 14 point lead in the Nfc championship only the fudge packers
clay plane yeah only the Vikings r undefeated
clay plane btw your a damn idiot lmao u said the packers would go 16-0 and win the super bowl lol😂
That’s the single most second hand embarrassment I’ve ever gotten
no way they refusing to let him in HOF because of this one play... plus its been over 40 years!
That mess was funny
"Is there anything worse?"
Yeah.. listening to that guy.
all of the Vikings team history wrapped into 1
Imagine a player doing that now.
The first guys voice was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy worse than watching him run the wrong way
This play has also obscured the fact that for a long time Jim Marshall had the record for consecutive games played. He was the Cal Ripken of football until a punter broke his record.
The Jets Buttfumble topped this now.
When Jim Marshall scoop up the ball 🏈 he ran his way to infamy
If you think about it what was wrong with the whole play was having Kilmer as a receiver or flanker.
Jim Marshall should at least be in the Bizarro NFL HOF considering his run-back for a safety.
that "John McClain" is a big boy!
In life, sometimes you run the wrong way
tbh I feel so bad for Jim like imagine how he must have felt when the 49er players ran up to him
He should be in the HOF BECAUSE of this play!
Fortunately, he threw the ball away once he crossed the goal line. Had he just dropped it in the end zone, SF could have recovered it for a TD, a difference of 5 points, assuming the XP. The Vikings won by 5. As bad as that play was, 66 yards the wrong way, it could have been even worse!
Thanks Jim lmao 🤣
At least Marshall managed to fling the ball out of play after he realized that he'd run the wrong way, and minimized the damage his mistake caused (the 49ers scored only two points instead of seven--and lost 27-22)...
I get it now after all these years
He's a spiritual mind wanderer
It all makes sense now
Jim Marshall Hall of Fame
The history of the Minnesota Vikings in a nutshell.
If Adam Wainwright had been an NFL player instead, and did this, his last name would have applied.....lol
"Are you that Marshall from how I met your mother?"
"No, I'm Brandon Marshall from wrong turn 4"
One time I thought I scored a toughdown but I was 5 short (-_-)
My dad said he saw this and he was wondering if his teammates were screaming where the hell are you going
Looks like a 200 proof moment. Had a few at half time baby.
One goal post looks so much like another.
Can you imagine if one of his teammates tried to to tackle him
Absolutely ffff-in UNREAL Jim is NOT in the HOF. I've been watching football since like 1962, and I don't even know what the deserving accomplishments are of half the inductees since at least 2010.
Still amazes me that no one way able to chase him down...it wasn't a sprint into the endzone
He probably got off easy with this one if he had done this in today’s NFL or ain’t no way he would’ve ever lived it down with all the memes That are promoted virtually right after every second of a play mistake happens. Jim Marshall probably was the one of the best defensive lineman in his era and still isn’t in the Hall of Fame and it’s because of this one play. Even though he caused a sack fumble later on in the game which actually won him this very game in which he ran the wrong way.
