Very helpful and accurate tutorial. i found my thermostat was stuck. The 'o' ring on the spindle had disintegrated and jammed the spindle! This thermostat is very hard to find outside the dealers. The dealers don't sell the thermostat only any more (no surprise) - the 4 way valve comes out at £387! I bought a 3mm x 2mm 'o' ring online for 24p. Put the 'o' ring on the spindle, add small amount of silicon grease, replace the spindle and all's good. Good video Jani.
Great tutorial. I've followed it to do my car this weekend. I really struggled to get coolant the into system from above. Couldn't get the system to blow warm so was clearly airlocked somewhere. In the end I squirted about 4 syringes of coolant into the drain bung under the car (on the electric heater pipe). Started working straight away. Heating is now perfect. Thanks for taking the time to make this guide.
Comprehensive stuff. Far beyond my technical abilities, so I'll not be able to fix my cold cabin, but it's interesting to know what the "experts" at my garage will be doing! Thank you!
@@rosscoghlan Slightly embarrassing, but I haven't actually properly fixed it, yet. I took out the small conical filter that is inline going into the cabin matrix, and that "fixed" it. I bought all the gear to flush out the coolant loop, clean it with citric acid and then refill it, and have never got round to doing it...
thanks a lot for yours video. It's very detailed with marks and text description. Usually it is shot with a shoe and with poor lighting and it is generally not clear what to do.
Thank you, I perceived this as a common issue and decided to throw some personal hours to it and make a video out of it. I am very glad it helped you, thanks!
Thank you very much for this very informative video. I have being looking for something like this for ages. A picture or video shows the various stages perfectly 👍🏽
another question also, if I lose coolant liquid during the cleaning of the filter, why not just adding more coolant directly to the default intake (the one accessed by just a plastic cap and labeled?, why it has to be injected to the hoses?
Not sure what you refer with default intake but as long as you think your way does not create / leave air pockets, all should be good. This is not the only method for sure, just tried explaining how one can do it with great probability how you would not end having air pockets here and there.
Thank yo very very much! I went to try to clean my filter and I noticed that the bleed valve is not even there, and the bottom left port on the 4 way valve does not have anything connected to it at all. I think someone bypassed the filter by taking the bleed valve and filter assembly out, and I have no idea why the 4 way valve would be missing the hose..i think it would go to the electric heater. Do you have any idea why that would be done and what problems it may cause?
This is a problem that affects most and people get very annoyed when they do not get heat to their cabin. Can you identify better what do you mean by the bottom left port on the valve?
@@janilaakso It turned out to be either the feed or the return to the electric heater unti. I discovered that my car does not have an electric heater, so there is no hose to feed from the 4 way to the heater that is not there. I am still trying to find where my filter is though!
We cleaned the filter and the 4-way thermostat, the stem moves under warm water, but when reinstalled in the car it does not open. I currently use it without a thermostat, the heating is perfect, do I need it at all? :)
@@janilaakso Thanks Jan!; what do you meaning getting heat to my cabin? like literally using the heating system and having it working properly will meaning there's no air pockets, or the opposite, turning the heat on and not having any heat in my cabin will mean there's air pockets? or a third option, having heat coming trough the vent to the cabin WITHOUT turning on the heat (it happened to me before cleaning anything).
@@reknero5443 After this maintenance, start your car, set / request heating to cabin (put it to very high or maximum), drive your car, and if in 10 mins you start to get very hot air to your cabin, mission successful, no air pockets and hot air is flowing to cabin. You should get so hot air from the vents that you cannot, at least comfortably, keep your hands on front of the vents more than just 10 seconds, after that you hand starts to feel too hot, so it will be up to 60 degree in Celsius.
After fill-up done, try using your electric heater first, observe for leaks for a few minutes at least, then start ICE and observe for leaks a few minutes then do a testdrive. Once ICE is hot you should get hot air to your cabin, this means you do not have airlocks. Cabin heat exchanger is one of the topmost component as well in the whole system.
Big syringes with 60cm / 2 feet long thin flexible hose you can buy e.g. from here: www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=250ml+Large+Capacity+Syringe When blasting liquid in, try pushing syringe's thin hose as deep as it goes to Mitsubishi's hoses, then you are good.
Thanks for the video! Can I remove 4-way valve for inspection first before rinsing process? Or will I loose too much coolant if I attempt to remove attached hoses?
I dont remember how much coolant would be lost if you plain remove all hoses, but I bet you slowly start to lose quite a bit as the 4-way valve is a bit lower than the higher hoses.
@@janilaakso yeah, I tried to disconnect one hose and coolant go out pretty extensively. I think I'll go order coolant first to be able to replace lost volume. Is it ok to top it up by filling expansion tank or under that cap above the radiator is better? Thank you
Probably either way is OK but you may have a bit of air now in your system, so if your cabin does not get warm by any chance, then you need to burp it. I injected every hose with a blaster and this avoids air pockets.@@anti1869
I do not think you can only buy the thermostat element, instead you buy whole 4 way element, but I may be wrong. Mine was stuck and I got it working by dismantling it first, some have found there is a o-ring that has dis-integrated and you might be able to replace it. Test your thermostat under hot water, it should aggressively push out when hot water applied. Good luck!
Hyvä video! Mulla on koko systeemi huuhdeltu kahdesti, suodatin puhdistettu ja kiertovesipumppu vaihdettu. 4-tie ventiilin otin irti, auki ja putsasin. Silti puhaltaa vielä kylmää. Kennolle menevä alumiiniputki lämpenee mutta toinen putki pysyy kylmänä. Olisko ilmaa sitten kennossa?

Hi Jan, how do I know if I got air pockets, after doing the cleaning of the filter?
Well, you cannot see it, so you have to put it back together, run it and if you get heat to your cabin then you know.

Also why you say that cleaning the filter wont last as a solution?
There is more gunk in the system, it might work for a short period of time until new gunk moves to the filter and then filter is dirty / stuck again..
This is great, thanks so much for the detailed approach. How do you know if there are air blocks?
I have done full drain and fill-up now three times with big syringe / blaster, no airlocks this way.

Clamp hoses with vices or whatever and then you can extract 4-way valve without losing much of coolant. It is a good idea to start it with this, yeah.
