  • It’s time to upgrade my old storage cabinet to sleek Euro-style plywood woodshop cabinets. The metal cabinet in my shop was a hand-me-down and had seen better days. Enter these plywood cabinets made from baltic birch and maple plywood. Hanging these cabinets on the wall opened up a lot of floor space in the woodshop. And adding the shelf pins makes it easy to accommodate anything I need to store. This cabinet is a perfect solution for storage in any workshop.

I like the simplicity of the cabinets and how you designed them to curve back so as not to interfere with using the jointer. I prefer to use different types of joinery on my shop furniture, so I can practice, and hone my skills. I've been studying and practicing Japanese jointery for almost 2 years now, and I have only touched the tip of the amount of joinery they use in furniture and structure builds. Many of the smaller cabinets and furniture builds done in the traditional style do not use glue , nails, or screws. The joints have very tight tolerances so you don't need them. I just picked up a book on Korean joinery and I look forward to tackling them.
Pocket holes and butt joints are fast and easy, but not a challenge and that is what I love about this craft. After 50 years of woodworking, I'm always learning and never bored with it. Keep doing your thing, it suits you.

    • @TimberBiscuitWoodworks
      @TimberBiscuitWoodworks  7 місяців тому

Absolutely! Japanese joinery is the pinnacle. For this one I’m more going for convenience since it’s just shop furniture but elevating the joinery for a furniture piece is always a fun challenge.

Yes shelf pins for shop furniture! This is the first video of yours I've seen, and it was an absolute treat to stumble upon. I found the pacing, camera angles, amount of detail and dad jokes to be spot on. I've watched enough woodworkers on UA-cam to know you deserve far more recognition. Excited to follow your journey, keep up the great work :)

Yes and No shelf pins. What I have found is once I get them where I want them I never move them again. Thing is, for the first few weeks or so I generally play with them based on what I'm actually putting in them vs what I thought I was going to put on the shelfs. This is for shop and indoor cabinets.

Yes shelf pins for lightweight stuff, for medium weight, use holes that go all the way and bolt the shelves, and for heavier stuff, cut boards the width of the shelf, and the height between each shelf, then screw that to the back. You can add angles to support the front and don the same on the side if it's still too heavy.
Using some laths for less heavy duty shelves works too, and you can always move that by unscrewing them and screwing them at an other height, than add a sticker on the old holes.
Though you can do that with a shelf pin setup or any shelf.
I'll add, use whatever you want for furniture, as long as it looks good enough to you and does its job, it doesn't need to be perfect.

Yes shelf pins. If you need them, they're already done. If you don't - they don't get in the way. And for a shop, I'd double up and put everything on wheels that I can - cause what are the chances I laid the shop out correctly for every project? Nil. So, moving things lets the shop adjust to me rather than needing me to adjust to the shop.

By the way, if you position your pin holes right, you don’t need extra holes for the hinges and the pins work great as a door stop too. Even if you don’t change the shelf’s for years, in the moment you want/ need to, you are going to be happy you made the right choice. Looking forward to see more videos of yours.

I’m with ya! Unfortunately there wasn’t enough people looking for plans with this one so I didn’t end up making them.

Yes, shelf pins. Personally, I have a small basement shop. So things move and shift as new items are added or removed.

10:57 on my last project I used biscuits as alignment helpers before I screwed in the pocket holes. This combination works great and doubles the strength of the cabinet:)

Really like that curved transition between the two depths.

Baltic Birch Plywood….of course! Of course! In UK it runs at 300 USD (appx converted) per single 8x4 sheet. Let me say that again 300 Bucks! It ain’t happening for a basic cabinet carcass mate…not unless we win the national lottery!
Your build video is enjoyable, props for the work…

Yes shelf pins. Just because I may never change the height but I could if I wanted to.

They turned out great And I hope you find a nice replacement for birch plywood we still have a few suppliers here in Australia but they have raised the prices

Thank you! Yeah I have actually sourced some domestic ply that seems comparable. We’ll see

Shelf pins - yes... will I likely adjust them? No, not often but I like flexibility when I randomly decide to completely reconfigure my shop. Great shelves, dude. I arrived at the same philosophy about shop furniture when I started. It has to work, not distract me, and can't look like poo because staring at that would make your project kinda poopy. One thing I do with back panels is check square on the panel before attaching it. That way, if the back panel pulls the piece, I know it's going into square and not out of it.
Thanks for the man glitter shout-out.

Haha no problem! And yeah that’s a great point, the back panel can help to square everything up if needed.
