I too have experienced this type of learning from simply watching a no nonsense UA-cam crash course. As opposed to the rigorous and tedious in-class semester drawn courses that add unnecessary fluff and often meaningless busy work. It tells me specific professors need to tweak how they teach or revamp their courses and how they present them. Many of my fellow classmates have expressed similar opinions and concerns. Just because accounting is complex doesn’t mean we should be forced to learn it with complexity.

Negative equity is simply spending money (debit), if your are spending money and not getting any income your debiting your account and therefore your Equity will be a negative since it is only Debiting money. If you spent money but had a greater income than expense you will be crediting your account and that is having a Positive Equity.

meaturama Okay i get it now. Same goes to me. There are a lot of topics n theories to cover in linguistics. Trust me, i think i can handle 2-3 major ones like sociolinguistics, language n politics, like that. But when it comes to neurolinguistics or phonology, just forget it. I dont even remember a thing lol. Ppl think i know everything abt linguistics but no fucking shit.

+Alma Yena The key is to learn fast in the real world. That's all you get in university is a conceptual appreciation of various topics and very little practice to put them all together. But after you close the books a few times, the pieces will fall into place and it will all make sense. All the best to you both.

+meaturama thank you very much for being so candor, you got it out of my chest too .... I'm in the same situation, but i couldn't manage to pass the course the first time, I'm retaking it. I'm doing MBA, financial accounting is a three credit that hunts me down, i signed up for management and leadership courses but i ended up with accounting and finance due to stupid university lack of professors on other subjects and i don't have any other options.

Getting good grades is a just a game. You can learn a lot and still get poor grades or learn nothing and get great grades. However, the real world doesn't pay you a salary for your grades. Find your passion and learn as much as you can about it. Accounting is not for everyone, but for those who do enjoy the numbers, its a very good career.

Do you have a video or a resource where I can learn the 'why' behind these accounting principles? For example, "Why are assets called debits when debit means to take something away, but that's the opposite of what you're doing?" But when talking about equity, you call something you actually have (like money in the bank) a credit -- which makes sense. No one ever seems to answer those kinds of questions, they just say, "that's how it works" but I think that's what prevents me from understanding it. Then I just go back to using my checkbook journal for everything. I totally understand the reason for double entries, but don't understand why you would use the same words to mean opposite things. It's like cat means feline except when it's sitting in my neighbor's yard, then cat means canine.

+Quinn Olson A very good question indeed. The problem is that we are all familiar with debit and credit from our interaction with our banks. When the banks issue a debit memo - they are taking money out of or charging our bank account. The opposite is true for a "credit" to our bank account. Then when people go to learn accounting, they are like "WTF everything is backwards". So unfortunately, you just have to separate what your bank tells you from learning accounting. Debits and Credits are just labels we put on journal entries. Some people call debits "the left side" of a journal entry and the credit "the right side". When I use spreadsheets, I use positive numbers to represent debits and negative numbers to represent credits. "Debit" and "Credit" are simply labels we use to distinguish the balances in asset, liability, equity, revenue and expense accounts. Hope that helps.

      Or maybe think like this,
Assets are what we own before the business starts
So we have to give it away to get something else that we need required for business
Hence debit - taking/giving something away
Then we get goods required for business for which we will have to pay from our assets(liability).but since we r receiving the goods , it is called credit
      (Credit- supposed to receive something).
Then we have equity which is assets minus liability. That is the money we gain / profit made - again something which we r recieving, hence it is again a credit
This logic also explains why equity is debit when it is negative right?
Coz when there is a loss we are loosing money

@expendable What you made there Minestrone Soup? Why you confuse accounts type with Income Statement and Liability? Hmm you do are a great DJ. That distribution mean leverage. That when you sale a shit the client have 2 weeks term to pay for the shit you have sold. The sold item goes in credit account because you first recieve the money after 2 weeks. What the hell are you making there when you dont understand anything. You cook soup and you make DJ mix music but you have no ideea what is how , why and you talk only shit .
