Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! Hope you enjoy this review. Ironically, King makes one of my least favorite baritone horns (the 623) and one of my very favorites (this 627)!
Thanks for tuning in, Robert! I imagine King and Conn made pretty similar-sounding horns at many points in history-they’re known for sharing a few beers now and then, so to speak. The 5G is an excellent mouthpiece. I’ve used one on tenor trombone for years and even used to plug it into my high school’s Yamaha YEP-201 euphonium because the mouthpiece in its case was a 12C that had a very bright and closed-off sound.
Sounds good! I briefly owned the 4 valved version of this horn (mine was also from the 70s I think.) It had a painfully flat 2nd partial for some reason. The rest of the horn was great, but low Bb down to E were unusable.
Thanks for your comment, Paul! Unfortunately I’ve encountered quite a few baritones with an unusable low Bb-E range. This 627 was okay, but a Grand Rapids MI baritone as well as an Amati Kraslice I’ve tried just did not have a lot on the 2nd partial.
Sounds great. I have a King 606 trombone from late 70's made by King Musical Instruments and it is very good. Today's King instruments are made by Conn-Selmer and it is not the same.
We have an older Baritone at my school that's quite similar to this, not a huge fan of playing it with the band since it's a little out of tune with itself but it's nice to take it after school and playing around with it
In hindsight I did notice some intonation issues with this horn as well but its sound is really nice! Although their instruments can be inconsistent, when King gets something right they *really* get it right.

I’m loving the news presenter voice and the electrocuted looking hair
The baritone was alright too
The first two are here to stay! (Well, depending on how quickly I lose the second...)
Sounds very much like my Conn 3 valve baritone (also from the 70’s) I love playing it wit a Bach 5G for a big round sound.
Nice playing! Cheers

Soul patch Sam!
Loved your review. I'll probably never play this instrument, as I said, great review.
The 'soul patch' is more of a lighting quirk. I can't really grow facial hair. Glad you liked the review!
It’s my favorite kind of Baritone Horn in terms of the design
I agree. The open wrap, upwards bell, and forward facing valves are a great combination for ease of playability!

Great Samuel!😁👍👏👏👏👏
Thanks!

I love the King 606! I think you are right-modern Kings are simply not made with the same essence or to the same standard.
Finally i found what it is called i play this version in my band and im 13 so

the amount of times I said "it" in that sentence is crazy lol

初めまして!
tubaとeuphoniumの合いの子みたいな感じですよね、baritoneの音色。
それにしても、柔らかい綺麗な音ですね〜素晴らしい♪

Looks like a tuba
It’s a little skinny for that, but it definitely does have a more open wrap than most baritones.
