- Surprise, The little mermaid is awful.
Who knew that the multi billion dollar, uninspired company that is disney was able to churn out another hollow, soulless, and disingenuous remake of a beloved classic. What a surprise. A little fun fact about me, this is my favorite Disney classic. Why do you ask? It's the only one I remember. Well it’s the only one that I had on disc growing up. But it also really felt like the most animated movie of the Disney classics. The ocean setting is perfect for the medium. The songs and visuals create a whimsical and vibrant feeling that just feels like good old classic Disney. So was Modern Disney able to dig up the grave of an already good film and remake it with the same energy and passion as the previous? NO.

The lack of Ariel’s bright maraschino cherry red hair has to do with this director wanting to make the movie look more “realistic.” It’s the same reason why it’s so dark underwater. It’s the same reason why Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle were animated the way they were in the live action remake. It’s like Disney now hates their own audience with these live action movies. They are deliberately making them bland, colorless, and trying to be more realistic to prove they’ve matured. We don’t watch these movies to think about real life, though. We watch them because we want to escape reality for a little while with a bright, colorful, and heartwarming fantasy where magic is possible.
Love that they want things to look more realistic... in a movie about merfolk, cecaelia and singing fish.
Disney: We wanna make it realistic
Also Disney: show a bird singing in the ocean
If her sisters have even less natural hair colors, there's no excuse for this Ariel to not have bright red hair
@@dustymcwari4468 Yeah, while there have been some genuinely great Disney films this past decade, such as Coco, Encanto, Frozen, and Moana, they’ve also lost a lot of my respect with how much they keep shitting out these live action remakes of animated Disney classics from the childhoods of those of us who are now adults from 20+ years ago.
I really wanted to be able to like Hallie Bailey because she really does have a lovely voice that is reminiscent of Jodie Benson’s, and while she’s not an amazing actress in this movie, she’s shown that she can do better with better directing.
Unfortunately, my admiration for Hallie turned to dislike when she arrogantly and immaturely accused everyone who didn’t love the live action remake as being “racist” without ever apologizing.
Sure, there were some genuinely racist comments and reactions, but I guarantee you that the majority of us really don’t care about the fact that Ariel is being played by a black actress at all.
Most of us are pissed off because of the shitty “realistic” animation/CGI in the live action TLM, particularly for Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder.
We’re pissed off because important instances of character development, growth, and story in Disney’s animated TLM have been erased for Eric, King Triton, and even Ariel herself in favor of portraying her as this one-dimensional girlboss who can magically do everything by herself without ever needing to be helped or rescued by anyone else, especially not another man. In the 1989 film, she was a headstrong, hopelessly romantic, impulsive, and rebellious teenage girl. She had various strengths and weaknesses, which led her to rescue characters she feels connected to in their time of need, and a special interest that she was willing to make impulsive sacrifices and risks to pursue in her desperation, hurt, and insecurities under pressure from Ursula after her father reacted by destroying her entire collection of human things.
Here, her obsession with the human world above is less believable because they make it so she’s never been to the surface before she caught sight of the ship and Eric on the surface above before, but at the same time they keep trying to hammer home the point that Ariel didn’t become just become human and give up the chance to see her family all for a man she saw once. Like, why not just have her going to the surface before she meets Eric like in the 1989 film? That actually made her desperation to become human because she was obsessed with the world above, even before she saw him, a lot more believable than having her never go up to the surface before she rescues him at all. Instead, she never goes up to the surface before seeing Eric and rescuing him in in the live action remake of the movie, so they rewrite/omit lines of dialogue about her loving him, make her forget about the true love kiss in three days part of her deal with Ursula to remain human permanently. They do everything in their power to *tell* me that Ariel isn’t becoming human all for a man in the live action film, and it’s annoying. Good storytelling is about consistent showing, not telling. That’s something the animated 1989 film did better.
We’re pissed off because of how dark and dreary the cinematography and lighting is in the camera in the underwater scenes.
We’re pissed off because Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, and Jacob Tremblay aren’t the greatest singers for the roles they played in this movie.
We’re pissed off because of just how wooden Javier Bardem is as Triton.
We’re pissed off because the lyric changes in certain parts of songs to “give Ariel consent” actually take away her agency, and make Ursula seem less cunning and evil.
Honestly, there are so many things to dislike about this movie, and none of it has to do with the actress’s race. It has to do with the fact that Disney is destroying their own property that made them great in the past, so they can make money and be seen as “woke” on social media.
Her sister literally has pink hair and Ariel couldn't have bright red hair???? She is a mermaid. She isn't supposed to look normal.
I feel like the reason they took away Ariel’s iconic red hair is because they wanted this version to be different and more personal for Halle specifically, but if that’s the case why not make an original story?
Taking Ariel’s red hair away for the sake of making Halle’s Ariel feel more personalized is plain stupid (imo)! Ariel’s red hair is what made her standout! It not blonde like Cinderella, or Aurora, it’s not black or brown, it’s red which made Ariel unique + her red hair complemented her green tail, all the more making Ariel’s design cohesive and interesting. However, in the remake, her hair looks dull and it blends in with her complexion, which throws off the original color scheme, and doesn’t look as interesting or appealing as before.
Yeah, seeing the side by sides has just made me want to rewatch the original. The new one is just kind of ugly. Especially the animals.
When seen with the princesses, she sticks out like a sore thumb.
@@Drixenol86 right!!
Has nothing to do with Halle, bruh
@@TyeArtisik how so? if it doesn’t why did they change it to begin with? it’s clear that they wanted this version of Ariel to be different from the og! That explains why her hair, top, and tail are different!
For me it has nothing to do with the casting. For me its about Howard Ashman. Disney/Menken erasing his legacy, songs, and themes.
Without Howard Ashman, there would be no Disney Renaissance. I cant in good heart support that.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Government uses the "Skuttlebutt" song as a new torture method.
Especially as he’s dead and not able to defend himself
Even tho I think Melissa Macarthy sounded exactly like Ursula at some points, I was underwhelmed with her performance. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if they casted Queen Latifah again lol
Or I was thinking if they had casted a drag queen it would have been so cool!! … and potential villain story like maleficient
@@sufiamufti2079she was a drag queen but only for a few months from what I read
This is the same woman who did pretty well as a woman who combined animals together in Kim Possible, ANOTHER Disney project!
That's right, Melissa McCarthy voiced DNAmy! Betcha didn't know that, huh?
The story had unnecessary changes, the colors were dull, and Halle is the only only one that can sing, but she's not a good character singer. All her songs sound like covers (they are but shouldn't sound like it) when they should be character thoughts in song form. Her choices when singing focus more on articulation and technical skill than character acting.
What's a good character singer?
@@jamishascott4854someone who’s voice conveys the emotion in the song that makes you feel like it’s something that’s actually happening unlike covers which don’t take into account the emotions that are going on in the persons heads

This might have been one of the most lifeless movies I've ever watched. It was boring too. Halle can sing but can't act.

@@ActuallyAndrewYT Haha it's funny because it's true
thats the thing i think if you got an actress that has red hair and matches the look of ariel the character have been fine people would also have no issues with it. its just the route they took with it and its not me hating on black women either.
In my personal opinion, she can’t sing, and she can’t act. Please don’t hate me for that.
@@Nintendofan781 and tbh, if they didn't want the smooth bright red hair, then might as well make a completely different character, Ariel's hair is the most recognizable thing she has, the second you see a mermaid with such mane, first thing you think is Ariel xd
I absolutely hated her hair. The color was dull. Nothing against dreads but without them her hair wouldve been more pleasant on the eyes in the underwater scenes.
Same! It looks like they didn't put any effort to make her look good? Her hair, the blue dress and pink(?) hairband was not flattering. And some of the shots somehow exaggerate the distance between her eyes. I've seen photos of her where she looks so much better, but I haven't seen much of it in the clips from the movie. And the design of her sisters, she looks so plain in comparison 😂
@@yueyume why even try to do better when they got a card to show anyone who criticizes them.
Honestly, they kind of fail in the Ariel hair department, like not only do they choose the ugliest shade of red(burn brunette) they could find but I really didn't like that they didn't even try giving her different hair styles, in the animation version I get why they don't went all the way with the hairstyling but in a life actions, this is an missed opportunity.

Why does she sing along in Under the Sea as if she is ageeeing with creepy Sebastian rather than slightly enjoying herself for a moment then back to the, "You are wasting both of our time here. I should probably go."
She was probably hoping he’d get off her back-or doing it as a gesture to indicate she doesn’t hate it there she just wants something different. 🤷🏻♀️
She also sang along in Under the Sea in Kingdom Hearts II. And funny enough, Sora was the one who started off that version of the song!
Epic rant man, I'm baffled people are praising this remake? It's absolute garbage and does not do the animated classic any justice. The Scuttlebutt song is worse than any of the songs from the Little Mermaid 2 and 3!
I'd definitely watch Little Mermaid 2 than this. Melody's journey is still more entertaining
There's a girl, Lexie Mermaid, that did "Part of Your World" three years ago. She's lip syncing underwater and it still looks more beautiful and realistic than this "live action" CGI remake.

I don't care about the race swapping. This movie was because of how lazy and cheap it looked. The CGI was atrocious. They put no effort into making the movie feel like it was the Carribean. It looked like 18th century England with 4 black people in it because the racist producers never saw the Caribbean. Nobody could act or sing in this movie, and the entire run time was boring. Plus, they ruined Eric, who was a revolutionary prince because of how rebellious and complex he was as a character. Also, Ariel killing Ursula ruined the entire motivation of Triton, realizing that not all humans are bad.
Oh please. If anything I liked that they have a reason for Ariel to fall for Eric that didn’t simply revolve around him being handsome.
@@Annahg78 If you watched the movie, Eric was educated, brave, and rebellious. He was a complete 180 from Disney Princes who do nothing but be handsome
@@Annahg78 Eric was literally a renaissance prince for Disney. He dressed like a commoner he loved adventure and enjoyed exploration. He doesn’t care for Ariel’s looks but her voice. Showing he goes beyond looks and he killed Ursula and proved to Triton that not all humans are bad
Bruh, redhead Rihanna was hot as frick. Underappreciated look of hers.
I agree with your review 100%, AA! Well done!
I love the original Little Mermaid (and its direct to video sequels), as a kid I actually looked up to Ariel. Couldn't even bring myself to watch it for a review, but I'm glad you did, great one mate!
Bailey also claims to have looked up to Ariel as a kid - so much so that she learned to swim in order to feel more like a mermaid - yet now here she is saying her life would have been better if original, animated, red-haired, white-skinned Ariel had been Black while also saying that her version of Ariel wouldn't go to the surface 'just for a boy'. Talk about completely misunderstanding a character that she claims to have idolized. Ariel dreamed and aspired to be part of the human world long before she met Prince Eric. Either she's being coached on what to say or she just never really understood the story and its main heroine - either way it's sad
Yeah lol Halle is racist 😂
same. I have alot of fond memories of watching little mermaid and its sequel. I was sort of not impressed with the live action remake. I knew it was gonna be shit the second ariel was race swapped and changed alot of the songs. It just seemed like it was already a trainwreck.
@@wdj749 She didn't say Black Ariel. She's said a Black Mermaid.
She said, if there was a Black Mermaid growing up, her life would've been different which is pure shitty excuse to ever exist. But then again, I don't expect much from Black People nowadays.
There WAS, a BLACK MERMAID, co-lead with Ariel for 3 seasons as her best friend. And her name is Gabriella, she's black & mute or deaf... Clearly, Halle didn't watch little mermaid at all.
This is just my personal opinion, but this is not a Little Mermaid and Halle Bailey is not now, nor will she ever be Ariel. Please don’t hate me for that.
This movie was bad for every actor in it with The exception of Jessica Alexander as Vanessa there was not one good performance in the little mermaid 2023
I agree. Though I liked Grimsby too.
@@penmaster003 to be honest I barely remember much about grimsby he left no impact on me compare to the animated one
@@henrymockingbird9645 That’s fair. The only part that I remember is when Grimsby kicks the ring after Eric drops it so he can’t give it to Vanessa. That was funny.
Vanessa nailed it!
It's not just that Ariel has no nautical experience that makes the final battle as stupid as it is; she also has no legs to stand on - which are essential to steer a ship. So even if a person is dumb enough to believe she picked up how ships worked by watching Eric at the helm for half a minute, she physically can't steer a ship because she lacks the legs to support herself on (add in that the ship is in a whirlpool, making steering that much more difficult - even for an experienced sailor - Ariel's taking Ursula out is less about skill and more sheer dumb luck).
Yeah, changing it so that Ariel kills Ursula was just a stupid move on every level.
Mind you, this was directed by the same guy who gave us Mary Poppins Returns! Which is a GOOD live-action Disney movie!
I liked hallies singing, i liked the song she sang about learning to walk. I liked the Caribbean town and dance scene. Eric wasnt hot enough, i wouldnt give up my voice let alone the cheeks. I wasnt impressed by sebastian. I hated skuttle. Was flounder even in this movie? Couldnt tell. All out brawl was hilarious in a bad way. Seriously tho. H2O Just add water had better acting and cgi than this. I like Halle’s singing but her acting is bad. Like it seems she’s a singer not a musical performer
@@holdencross5904 Oh Naur, Cleor! 😂

Disney needs to come up with something original instead of recycling fairytales.
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm not as upset with Wish as most people! Because at least it's an ORIGINAL idea, and it was actually TRYING with the writing and could be fun to watch! Plus, I think the mix of watercolor and CGI looks kinda nice!
But this? It's lazy, stupid, has questionable effects, and is totally pointless because we have the original, good, version!
Overall I feel like the plot was one of the biggest problem. I mean I eventually got over the lack of bright red hair but the overall cgi was also terrible. I’m conflicted on Halle’s voice though. On one hand, her voice is amazing, but the way the song is sung is not really fitting to plot, plus they changed a lot of fundamentals of the plot. I’m also conflicted if it was the directors fault, the script writers fault or the actors. Since, well there was also interviews of the actors which suggests otherwise. Anyways, it was soo weird. The acting, the plot, the songs. Overall, it’s illogical, and unbelievable. In my opinion, it’s not a remake but it’s not adaptation, it’s stuck at an awkward place between it.
Horrible movie could have given her a better wig
Spider-Man Across the spider verse next week
Cant w8 loved that One.
These character models for Flounder and Sebastian bother me more than the Ariel race swap does. They look hideous! This is CGI gone horribly wrong, by those who just don't care!
Yeah, I shut up about Ariel when I saw what they did to the beloved animals. They look scary now.
Why would u have a problem with the race swap shes a literal fish like who cares if she’s black or white. The CGI was not horrible it’s a live action movie what are they supposed to do ?
@@Khl033this argument has been used MANY tones and I’m tired of it. First of All Ariel is HALF fish. Half human. Also she had an ICONIC look since 1989. All the other princesses looked like the cartoon but Ariel did not. Is it the biggest deal? No but there’s NOTHING wrong with ppl wanting their favorite princess to look the cartoon. It’s called continuity
@@lessismore8533 it’s a fish why are people getting so mad over a fish they casted who they casted the movie was great so does it matter?
I saw this yesterday I was falling asleep like I couldn’t watch it. It was bad
And I agree with you about the race swapping it doesn’t matter to me but if people act like this is good representation then I’ll say something. But why couldn’t they just hire someone who can sing AND ACT. Like yes Hallie is an amazing singer but she’s not a good actress. Her performance felt flat and hollow I didn’t feel passion coming from her. That’s the problem with most of the characters they all feel so flat. Like for most of the movie she is quiet that means she needs to communicate through face expressions and body language. But she doesn’t do that she has same blank expression the whole movie.
Another thing I don’t get is what was the point of Ursula transforming into that woman (Clara? I don’t remember) like you said she looked nothing like Ariel. And what was the f*cking point. She had a good plan Ariel could not remember that she needed to kiss Eric so what the point of her coming to the human world
100% agree. What was the point of Ursula coming on land? But then again what was the point of remaking a timeless classic?
Besides the "Kiss the girl" scene, they didn't even seem in love. In 1989, Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder actually sing this song to get Eric to kiss Ariel and Ariel is just all like "yes, kiss me boo" with the twirling of the hair and lip biting, but 2023 Eric doesn't do justice. How would that kiss even have worked? Halle didn't at all seem in love with him and the whole point to STAY ON LAND is to be have in LOVE with the guy, get the guy to kiss you and stay human permanently and fulfill your dream to learn more of human-y things 🤦♂️
This Disney remakes soulless
The only problem with the race swap was that unfortunately it was during a time where trading with Brazil and England was a thing….but they were trading slaves so to have a black queen doesn’t make any sense she would’ve been traded and so would’ve Ariel when they found her… it makes no sense to happy mixed races of people dancing and singing in a town where slavery would’ve been prevalent and yes it’s a fictional movie but they focus on geography and it’s time specific about the timeline and what year it’s set in. I feel like the race swap in my opinion would’ve been better if idk they made it in the modern times but idk that’s just me

I wish I could put the 2 together where Ariel is like a sixteen year old girl in love with Eric, the eels had sly personality convincing Ariel to come, they didn't cut the verse about Ariel's voice. I think they should have put in the Broadway musical number "One Step Closer" to add to them learning to communicate. Plus, I hated how they dropped the snarfblat, made Ursula her aunt again and then made Eric an illegitimate royal. There was no reason for him to not be born a prince. The scuttlebutt was the worst song ever! "Les poissons" was about killing fish for food! It would have added to the plot. How does Ariel not get stung by all of those jellyfish 🪼🪼🪼🪼? This whole movie should have been done like Beastly was to "Beauty and the Beast".

Apart from Ariel's hair... does anyone absolutely hates her tail also? Because do! That's not Ariel. The colour is off and what's with those big "faintail goldfish" style fins?
There's always the next mermaid adaptation. How many are there exactly?
The others didn’t claim to be Ariel, were just random mermaids…
She was presented as Ariel
Is it me or did it feel like her hair didn’t move enough during the underwater scenes
Bad acting all around. Too long. I was bored half way thru.
She is great at singing...I'm just sad that they went for a different approach in the songs. In the animation, Ariel was yearning to be on the surface...but in the live action, she seems more angry, determined and less naive like a teen.
I think you're confused between "Great at Singing" & "Having a Great Voice".
For example, Mariah Carey, Whitney & Celine are people with Great Voice & Great Singing.
Dolly Parton is somebody with Great Singing but Lacking in Voice. Her singing can hit your head & your emotion in all the right spot but her voice is gentle & weak.
Christina Aguilera is somebody with a Great Voice but horrible in singing. She does have a few good songs but there's never been any song of hers that makes me sentimental. If I have to put into word, she is "Tone Deaf".
Adele is another example of Great Singing, but lacking in voice. Her voice isn't bad but I wouldn't call it beauty. But her singing is awesome, she can backed her vocal with emotions, enough to give you goosebumps. I don't consider her to have a Great Voice or a Strong Voice.
As for Halle Bailey, she have an awesome voice but with an autotune actually, if you google her live singing, it's quiet bad, somewhere around Beyonce but she does have a stronger range and extend the note further than Beyonce.
However, the point is... Her voice is strong but her singing is BAD. PERIOD. Her Part of That World & Part of Your World are extremely SOULLESS. There is no emotion behind her voice at all. I did listen to all music of this Remake. THEY ALL SUCK!
Have you ever listen to a Song and be like Immediately attach to it? I have it... hundreds of time. It sticks to me like a Glue, since the first time I heard it. For example: Let It Go, Show yourself, Into the Unknown, Into the woods from Frozen. When will my life begins, I see the light from Tangled. Part of that world, Part of your world & all of others from Little Mermaid.
But Halle have 3 songs in this movie... Neither of it were standing out. Let's just say, the two songs, might not beat the original. But 3rd one, the one where she step on land first time... It does nothing for me. Which is on the contrast, All of Original stand out. I love all of it, there isn't one that I don't like.
I will admit, that I hate it when they race-swapped Ariel but I can understand, it's once in a lifetime Opportunity, if I was Halle, I'm not even sure if I would accept or reject the work. I would love to say that I would reject it if I'm not a Red Head but I can't say for sure... That's why I gave her benefit of the doubt.
She delivered the Note, but her Notes were empty, she failed to back her vocal with emotions. Something about her singing seeming "Forced & Superficial". There is no depth to it.
Like when she sangs:
I've got gadgets and gizmo's unplenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
Her note were sharp, clearly & cut off as if she was making a Statement for Presidential Election Speech. And her songs, were supposed to be directly at Flounder, actually, however, she sangs as if he wasn't even there. It's like she's having a schizophrenic episode.
In original, Ariel attentions were very directed. When she sings about her cavern, her eyes spread across her belongings. When she singings to founder, she pay attention to Flounder. When she sings about herself, her eyes were down as if she was looking inside. And when she sings about Human World, she keeps looking up to the world above. And you can hear the longing & the sadness of Ariel's voice embedded into her songs... when she singing Part of That World, there's an upbeat of excitement when she's describe anything about human but when switch back to describe her situation, it filled with laments & disappointment. And at the very end of the song, it was heartfelt of Longing & Wistfulness as she want it so bad but it ended in "Sad Note" because she knew she have no way out.
And when she does Part of Your World, her voice is filled with unsettling determination mix with longing but not to point of "Overexerting". It's mix of knowing what you want but you don't know how to get it yet. At beginning of the song, it's "Longing", middle of it was "Uncertainty" and end of it was "Determination". It's more of "I might be able to do it" instead of "I WILL GET IT DONE". "Watch & you'll see(Longing), SOMEDAY I'll BE(Uncertainty), Part of Your World(Determination)".
And when Halle does "Part of Your World", her facial express is creepy & bad, it's like she grinning her teeth as she have to go bathroom so bad but need to hold on to finish this scene first. And her singing... filled with Rages, as if she was mad at someone or angry at something, rather than filled with Longing & Determinations!
@@austinjt4264 Oh My Goodness. Yes. Thank you.
I don't know so much the differences in musical ability as it sounds like you do.
I understand and agree about Dolly, but would have to have some sort of music theory class to understand the others.
But Halle's versions of these songs are Hallow. That may be down to direction since most of the acting seems so wooden too.
Jodi has said that her performances are all down to Howard Ashman directing and guiding her in the booth. He knew exactly how each word should come across and how the character transitions through emotions with the music.
These songs are part of the story not a break for something pretty or fun.
When Halle sings these I am not wrapped up in the story and emotion. I feel like I'm at a concert venue or watching an episode of American Idol.
The people put in charge of making this have absolutely no understanding of the original story or character motivations. 😵💫
@@BrcRosa They wouldn't understand anything or rather, they couldn't careless. Because it was never about making an Art, it's about making a movement. They fact that everyone came out & calling everybody racist, should be enough proof.
I'm not understanding any music to any depth. LOLzzz...
I guess, what is really going is the fact I don't follow trend of music. I don't listen to it because it makes Top #100 or anything like that. I only listen to songs that it truly made an impression on me.
For example, something like Yesterday Once More from Carpenters and Fields of Gold from Eva Cassidy still haunt me to this very day since the first day I've listen to it.
Most of Dolly songs hit me emotionally. But most of Taylor Swift songs are also Hallow, to put in your words.
And because I connected to song emotionally, I can easily tell, if a song is lacking emotion or tone deaf or hallow as you put it.
But mostly, I listen to Chinese Songs. There are 2 type of Chinese Singers. There is a True Singer version, meaning, that builds up as Singers, not a Actor+Autotune Turned Singer.
These true singers, has profound voice. And their singers are superior, I would say to those of Mariah, Celine & Whitney.
The difference is... You can't hear their breaths. And they can sing live astonishingly good with seemingly unaffected physically by anything. Because, these Singers aren't just somebody with a Good Voice & then auditions & push out CD. Each & every single one of them a have a Sifu. Each & every single of them, been put to through extreme vocal training session before they debuted.
Unlike Mariah, Celine & Whitney, you can clearly see that they are struggling to sings when they do it live. Especially Whitney, as her breaths sometime, even louder than her notes. Same as all others English singers.

@@austinjt4264 Interesting take since I think that Halle is most definitely by not only normal people standards but also by vocal coaches standards an incredible and talented singer. Her live performances on the contrary are GREAT singing and her rendition of part of your world was not soulless, (her singing is NOT BAD point blank period lol) you can DEFINITELY sense her longing and desperation to go to the surface, I mean that's why I cried to it. I honestly don't know from where you got that from, i guess just personal preference but probably not a fact.
@@simmi3931 It was soulless and out of character. Everything they said was correct. Yours is just an opinion and not fact.
Firetruck red hair can work just fine on a black woman. But she has to put actual effort into keeping her hair looking nice. If she's lazy, red hair will betray her bad habits faster than black hair will. And that's what the Tide Pod eaters are really bothered by: they don't want black women held accountable for not taking care of themselves! It's fine to hold other women to certain standards for self-care; but you don't dare hold a black woman to such high standards!
You're really accusing black women of not upholding a standard for hair maintenance? BLACK WOMEN???
Of all the bullshit you could complain about, that's what you picked?
The movie is trash. Anyways it’s terrible. The movie is trash.
"Yo, Disney, what's the most you've ever lost on a coin toss?"
World building and politics is a GoT thing. Disney wouldn't allow it, it would have meant that Ariel dies or suffer abuse a la GoT.
Spoilers for people who care
I know Disney has no respect or care for their animated classics, but they make some of the most useless changes in the little mermaid remake.
i knew they changed some story stuff but why did they change the names of Ariel's sisters as well? What great purpose does it serve?
In the original animated movie, they're Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina and, of course, Ariel.
The remake changed the names of Ariel's sisters into Karina, Tameka, Mala, Caspia, Perla, and India.
And how many of Ariel's sisters are either adopted or from a different mother now? They're so varied in ethnicity I'm surprised people in the kingdom aren't worried about the line of succession.
Stupid changes to the story include Ursula removing Ariel's memory of the kiss she has to get in 3 days, adding an environmental safety subplot that involves old wooden human ships sinking (something that can actually help coral reefs to grow) while talking about how it would take 1,000 years to regrow (it takes like 20). Prince Eric is now adopted. And instead of Eric risking his life to save the dog when it's trapped in the burning ship, Ariel saves the dog.
Some original songs, none as good as the ones in the animated version.
Oh that reminds me, for whatever reason Ariel sings under the sea as a duet with Sebastian, despite it being a song that's trying to convince her to give up on her dreams of exploring the human world and stay home where it's comfortable and familiar. In the original, she's not into it at all and leaves eventually, but now she gets into it and sings the song with him.
Ariel is of course the hero at the end, defeating Ursula with the ship. Ensuring that Triton did not see the good in humanity, but still acts as if he did and letting Ariel go. And yes, changes were made to the lyrics of some of the songs that didn't need changing. It seems a lot of the changes make the whole movie miss the point of the original movie, while still trying to emulate the original.
The acting isn't as good as the voice acting in the original. Hallie has a great singing voice, but as an actress she lacking in this film for me. None of the remake's versions of the song are as good as the animated film.
|Scuttle also now talks with Ariel underwater, meaning she never went to the surface before seeing Eric's ship. Yep, a bird stays underwater for an extended period of time talking, using up oxygen, instead of just having Ariel go up and talk to him (now her in the remake) on the surface. Instead of a concert that Ariel was debuting in, emphasizing her amazing voice, it's some kind of council between all her sisters and the king she misses because he apparently has his daughters stationed in all the seas watching over things and they only come home for this conference/council. In the original, they just lived in the palace and lived their own lives. I also had a feeling of closeness between the sisters for as little as they were there, I believed they were sisters. In the remake if I weren't told beforehand I'd honestly have thought they were King Triton's harem lol
Aquafina IS talentless! She deserves to be forgotten... She's so bad, it hurt's!!!
Wasn’t even the little mermaid anymore. Hated it. It was unnecessarily dark, boring, a whole new story fr, and gave me demonic vibes.. Halle can sing, but Ariel had a sweet soft voice. Her emotion behind the songs were different .. I feel like their adaptations of the songs were too…baritone.
I loved the soundtrack, except for scuttlebutt and Melissa McCarthy's acting. The rest of the actors were just bland. Halle has a wonderful voice but her acting needs a LOT of work
They destroy a nice movie
Ariel: “I had to save him.” Drunk Triton: “Ha ha ha ha ha, nobody cares you’re in zero trouble!” Ariel: “WTF!?!” Based on the drunk thumbnail.
At least we have better options in the theaters right now that show that Disney is dying while digging it’s own grave. Thank god for Mario and Spiderverse to give me sweet serotonin while this thing can die in a fish fry
Finally someone is talking about how fake the underwater scenes look. You can tell they are on land and the movements are ugly because of it.
I am not even going to watch that movie even if they pay me to watch this movie. 🤮
oh i watched it online in decent quality saved me money big time.
I am not going to watch it even from online sources
who cares lol
@@Painisme9 nobody cares for you lol
Actually, It's not surprising at all that this movie was terrible. All the live remakes are becoming terrible.
Plus they miss the mark on the originals.
Man, I'm SOOOOO excited about how they'll do that with the Snow White remake! *sarcasm overload*
@@artbytesia It all started with Snow White, I would not be surprised if it all ended with Snow White.
@@dreamguardian8320 Same with me.
Agreed! I keep getting harassed by Gen z for pointing this out so I don’t say anything anymore out of fear of getting bullied.
I actually really liked this film, but its still fun to watch people rip apart any movie, regardless of whether I enjoy it.
No thing wrong with liking this film. As long as you acknowledge it’s got flaws and doesn’t hold a candle to the original lol
Keep Rocking The Truth Bro!
🤟😝
Thanks!
The biggest problems I had with this film:
1. CGI hair, you can tell they CGI the hair underwater. It does not look or feel natural.
2. Arm movements, all the merfolk move their arms continuously and it felt unnatural in more ways than one. I didn’t care much for the arm movements.
3. The choice to have the film be in Caribbean was bad because it didn’t feel like it was in the Caribbean at all. It was like they never been to the Caribbean.
4. Dull color palette, the film was dull in color. The entire film was dull in color. Even in real life the ocean has more color, I seriously doubt they have been underwater because if they have than they know how colorful the ocean is.
5. The acting is not the greatest. I did not care much for the acting and singing. Hale Bailey is a great singer but she wasn’t the best in acting. I like Melissa McCarthy but her Ursula was not memorable. The change in lyrics to poor unfortunate souls was not a good decision because it was not realistic.
It amazes that Disney says they want the film to be realistic but then they don’t feel realistic because of the characters and colors.
Halley is a great singer but there are tons of better singer they could've hired. Her acting is lifeless compared on how the animated Ariel is very expressive. I did not finish it voz its very boring. Its like watching a Snyder/horror movie. I can't understand people who defends it. Its not about being racist. The movie is garbage. Not even half of what Alladin and Cinderella live remake had offered.
Cinderella was the best remake!
17:00 I liked that ariel took into her own hands to defeat ursula or at least get her voice back , in the OG it was the bird thing I think who snatched it or made ursula drop it , but I totally agree that Eric should have taken the boat stearing wheel or at least both together at least than it shows they are strong together or something and there is some respect to be given to Eric but I guess the new Meta is useless male side kicks right
It was at least redeeming to Scuttle in the OG
Oh god… I just found out they’re gonna do Hunchback…. I’m done. If they do this, I’m done with you, Disney!
I am SUPER glad I decided to boycott all future live-action remakes a few years ago; it was the right call, I'd say!
Thank you infinitely for this.
There are people saying this version is better. I think there would be very few things that you could change in the original to improve it.
It was really interesting to see your take on the storyboarding or I franing of the shot. Your version definitely looked like it brought about more emotion and visual cues as to the impact of what just happened.
Probably coming from biased Gen zers who didn’t grow up with the original
Better? What are those people smoking? This isn't better; it's just pointless and stupid and incredibly woke! Plus, contrary to what people, including the people at Disney, say, unlike Song of the South, this movie is friggin' RACIST!
It's full of cringe and not to mention... Awkwardfina...
12:45 Hire this man
Modern disney just hates animation now and days
They also fear originality more than death or public speaking.
I've been an enormous fan since the original's release in 1989. It's sad that all of the ridiculous controversy couldn't help but weigh it down, but at the end, all I could wonder was what exactly anyone who _didn't_ enjoy it wanted from it. What did they expect? Sure, it's far from a perfect film (and I agree with you on Javier Bardem), but for as difficult as a film like this would surely be to make, I thought it was a pretty remarkable acheivement.
It makes me want to watch the animated version again.
The thing is the original is worth 723 MILLION today and only cost 50 million to produce. It is one of the best films they produced
I seen this movie than right after put the OG one for comparison, I already saw reviews and struggled watching throw the movie for the first 10 minutes cause I had a prejudgement but the movie wasn't any better , also about orsula when she took away ariel's fins she had to swim on her own to the surface , I like that the animated one Sebastian and the fish helped her swim up cause she couldn't use her new limbs, but in the new movie she was perfectly fine , they cut off the presense of her side kick fish to be the most useless side kick animal in any disney movie , he barely does anything
Yes thank you!! Rihanna had red hair !!
the original was 10 ...
I CALLED IT! IIII CALLED IT! I FUCKIN KNEW IT! I KNEW ITD BE A DISASTER FROM THE START! this is just woke TRASH I KNEW IT! We don't do Disney no more I'm pretty sure if I was casted as Ariel the movie would've skyrocketed because I know part of your world by heart I'd put so much passion into that song it wouldve been 10x better
NO ONE forces u to watch it r even look it up you sad patheric twat.
I am so happy that we were right and the movie is a failure 😂
They cut out the lines about how her voice wasn’t that important in the song 'poor unfortunate soul'. For feminist reason I guess? I thought those lines were entertaining and very important because Ursula was a villain and she was deceiving Ariel to give up her voice with those lines.
I don't like the costumes ... they look like a very bad none related wish dress that pretends to be from an aerial remake movie with a low budget cost made by someone in a basement ... sorry but where is the original dress ? The entire movie was copy pasted frame by frame, all the other life movies like belle and the best and especially cinderella got some amazing dresses ... why ariel doesn't? Is this kingdom this poor ? Either way I did like the scene where Eric and aerial had a similar collection hobby and that ariel showed him how to use these things
Zendaya should’ve been Ariel
I honestly didn’t think it was that bad.. 😅
This Ariel has no eyebrow and a nipple on the forehead. I don’t remember the original has a nipple anywhere.
Personally the main thing I actually liked about the movie was Halle herself. But the Scuttlebutt song? That was a travesty of epic proportions😭
The biggest problem for me is that its way too long for a kids movie.
Also in 8:00 when y were talking about the new song I thought u jumped to the song with yhe seagle cause I remember they added that one but when u spoke of a carriage and the fire , I was like ... oh yeah they did have that 🤔 I just forgot about it , but I dislike how 90 or 80% of this movie is just the songs repeated , if you cut the scenes from the animated and just slap the songs to the new movie y will never know the difference
😂 Yeah, such a surprise. 😂
Wow, it was not terrible. It wasn't nowhere near disney's best, but not terrible. I really don't understand the extreme criticism of this movie. I went to the movie theater with low expectations, and it surprisingly was not bad. Even my husband who's not a disney fan, doesn't like movies like these, didn't think it was terrible either. I'm convinced at this point, people just want to hate or have ridiculously high expectations .
Yes it it's they ruined Ariel no one asked for this
It’s freaky DISENY. Ppl are allowed to have high expectations

You can come for me if you want but the worst thing to me about this movie and don’t get me wrong. The entire believe his garbage thing was Halle didn’t care for her acting didn’t care for singing she’s not Ariel. our movie is garbage because it is. I definitely prefer the 1989 classic.

In that shot I would have actually probably have had her off to the side like he just threw her to the side without much consideration. Making.. camera pulling away from her.. maybe looking at her from outside the window. Window looking a bit like a cage.
So this is a classical European story. That means the people are European. Are we making a movie of an African tale and selecting a caucasian? Im waiting..

I don't hate The Little Mermaid 2023 because i love this movie.
Same
I'm a Ariel fan and I hate this movie, they did ariel sooo dirty
the pretty ursula is like….the best actor in the whole movie
Yes Thank you! I'm not the only one who thinks it sucks. Except Hailey Bailey was good though. I love the one and only original 2d animation.
You wanted Ariel to blink like she's underwater? Um... Underwater, I would keep my eyes closed to keep the water from stinging them. And even when I keep my eyes open underwater, I see nothing but a mixed blur, with loud water going into my ears and the pain of water going up my nose. And I have problems underwater, because I'm not a merperson. Ariel doesn't need to hold her breathe underwater. She breathes the water. So she wouldn't blink like a human swimmer underwater. She's comfortable enough to move like she's on dry land. And fish don't even have eyelids so there's no way to know how an aquatic creature should blink. And besides, you already criticized Javier Bardem's wooden acting, and we saw how the way The Lion King tried to make the animals' faces work realistically completely ruined their expressions. And in the original animated Little Mermaid, Ariel blinked underwater as if she was on dry land.
Although I've enjoyed the movie (not gonna lie) there were some parts I've hated it. Ursula observing Ariel through the crystal ball and she said: "She's in love with the human world and she found her soulmate." Pissed me off cause what she should've said is: "She's in love with the prince", but that narrative for women equality that always ruins everything... Also on the boat, Eric is the one who evade the kiss in the original but here Ariel is the one who did it! Of course men should always try everything first and get rejected... The whole movie I haven't felt the same magic as in the classic about them being in love. Eric finds out her name in the dumbest way possible. A-fina song was so annoying I don't know why they did that to the ears of those who went to watch it. Those are the things that I extremely disliked, not the race swap, not the characters appearance, not the CGI. Kiss The Girl song was ruined but Under The Sea wasn't! Those red starfish or bushes or whatever they are covered Ariel and formed around her like a Latino dress or something after that there is a part of the song (dancing mushrooms) that doesn't exist in the classic but it sounds great that's a plus to me! Overall there is an agenda and narrative pushing which is always ruining everything. Like the woke Fantastic Four for example (not the awesome one with Jessica Alba). Johnny Storm black. You kidding me? What if they make a Netflix show with Luke Cage being white? That will be total disappointment.
The visuals are just depressing. Like trying to be goth or something.
Not tooo much on the princess and the fog first black princess with the best soundtrack
7:20 Lizzo really wanted to be Ursula
Most realistic doesn’t mean it’s going to be entertaining… to substitute realism for creativity with a movie about mermaids is incredibly stupid and NOT entertaining
This Ariel is difficult to look at.
Im not in the entertainment industry! So i don't know what to look for. I thought it was beautiful
