  • In this video I talk you through the 5 things I wish I knew before I started training to become a doctor in Ireland. As I mention in the video I absolutely adore my course and I am so grateful that I get to be a doctor someday but these are just a few of the things that I had no idea about when I was a little 17 year old putting medicine number one on my CAO. Please if you have any questions comment!

    For the leaving, I was the queen of active recall and spaced repetition. In 1st year college I think I was overwhelmed by being surrounded by so many smart ppl I just started writing notes to try and make me feel smart. I’m in 2nd year now and I’m using anki more consistently and it’s way more efficient. I don’t regret making all those mistakes but I’m glad I’m not writing notes anymore and I stopped caring so much about everyone else. Going to therapy and surrounding yourself with good friends is a great help too!!

      Yes definitely deliberately blocking out what other people are doing was definitely a turning point for me. Best of luck with every thing !

    Hey I got my results a month ago and although my points are enough for medicine (590), my hpat sucked like I didn’t do any study for it so I was expecting it but could you please make a video on how u scored so highly in the hpat? I really want to study medicine in UCD but my hpat is stopping me :( I’m not sure how to approach questions properly since I live in a small town and there’s no resources for the hpat.

      @@drsabha7815 currently rewatching this video to remind myself that it's okay to feel like I don't know what lies ahead🙈 I'm also someone who loves planning and knowing so that aspect of studying med does scare me! I chose the Mater, just purely because my partner moved jobs to Swords, so makes sense financially to be able to live together with Dublin rent being so steep!

    Hi Sabha! Congrats on graduating I’m so happy for you. I’m only going into fifth year which is quite early but I know I want to study medicine in maybe trinity or NUIG. I’m just wondering what subjects I need to take in fifth years for my leaving cert to be able to go to medicine. I’m also wondering if you think it would be a good idea to take another subject outside of school? Also did you stay in student accommodation in you time at UCD and would you recommend UCD? Sorry for all the questions I’m just really curious

    • @hollywalshe2360

      if you look up the course there are what subjects you need to take and the points that you need to qualify for the course. also learning an extra subject isnt always a good idea. it will give you another fall back subject as only your top 6 are counted but it adds alot more stress so it is up to you.

    hi! I just wanted to know how much time you spend studying outside of lectures. I am hesitating between putting medicine or biomed as my first choice on CAO. Thank you! Also, are there in person lectures? or are they all online? Thx :))

    • @drsabha7815
      @drsabha7815  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Ross thanks so much for watching! I used medentry all those years ago and I put so many hours in. I was incredibly average at the start. I'm thinking that I might just do a video on how I approached the HPAT in terms of timing etc because I did start to study for it over the summer going into 6th year so it might be a good time for anyone going into 6th year!

    Hi Sabha, I'm currently only in 1st year in my secondary but I'm really considering being a doctor. Can you please tell me what subjects I really need to focus on ? Thanks so much, Zoe . x Also 2 more questions after watching your video (Sorry !)
    •How many years does it take to become a doctor ? (With special courses and medicine )
    •Are internships paid ? If not, How do you earn money ? (and what job do you think is best to earn money while in medical school ?)

    • @drsabha7815
      @drsabha7815  2 роки тому

      Hey! I’d say focus on learning the things you enjoy learning about. Science and maths are great, but I did music all the way up to my leaving cert as a break from logical thinking 😊. Focus on your study skills and stress management. Read as widely as you can to try understand lots of different people’s experiences in life (and if the HPAT is still around in 6 years it’ll give you the advantage there). There were definitely subjects I didn’t particularly enjoy in med school and being able to work through them was important. Finally don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You have absolutely loads of time to figure things out and develop your interests- I didn’t realise I wanted to be a doctor until halfway through fifth year. Thanks so much for watching and best of luck ❤️

      @@zoetaylorsversion to answer your two questions! UCD’s medical course is 6 years long, most of the other medical schools are 5 years. I chose to go to UCD so I could stay living at home so it made more sense for me. After you qualify as a doctor you earn money but you’re technically in ‘training’ for years until you become a consultant. When you’re on placement as a medical you are not paid, you have no responsibility, so many people have part time jobs😊
      There are loads of ways to earn money at medical school, I coached gymnastics in a gymnastics club I went to as a child and absolutely adored it, I found it a great change of pace. I did a few stints of working in a dominos pizza as well when there was no gymnastics happening. Some friends were phlebotomists in a hospital (phlebotomists work in hospitals to take blood from patients), so they had a great head start and were so good at bloods when we actually started working! Other friends worked in pharmacies etc. Hope this all helps

      Hey Donna! I got 570 points in my leaving cert back when it was the A1’s, A2 system and not H’s. Of course I had to do the HPAT as well where I got 99th percentile, 199 points ☺️. I’ve just graduated now from UCD

    Hi, how is the medical field for foreign doctors in Ireland?

    • @drsabha7815
      @drsabha7815  3 роки тому

      Hi Marina! Honestly I'm not the best person to speak on it however I do know that it is tough for doctors from outside the EU to get positions on training schemes in Ireland. Many of the doctors I have met who trained elsewhere are doing locum or standalone work which means they are not progressing in their careers. That does not mean it is impossible here but it is more difficult for doctors from outside the EU and Ireland for sure. Hope this helps

    Is medicine in Ireland teached in English or Irish

    • @ardfert1

      English is used by 98% in Ireland in college. Irish is not important.
