Aikidoflow, my LEGENDARY legend is my grandfather. A World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War and Contra War. Drafted into the World War II. A real survivor of how to stay alive. A Native American. And I love his quote. At his retirement party.
      "I'm not a warrior."
All those of wars. And he's not a warrior. I love my grandfather.

Yes me too, I started way back about '80 taking TKD(Korean Art of self-defense) for about 5 years til it started to get more expensive(I could buy books on the Art for $20 ea. . Later around '96, I started in Aikido, went several times, got some good techniques down(free),I did get to test but since I haven't paid....I didn't advance. I feel I got almost enough to put with my TKD then read several books on JKD(the 4 books on BL's fighting techniques). I got "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", "Entering,to trapping,to grappling" among others, even some Ninjitsu with Stephen K. Hayes and his Sifu Dr. Masaki Hatsumi. Some books on TKD to learn a few up coming forms(just for yucks).

As we can see you don´t know yet that Chinese Martial Arts are the oldest ones...Almost all other martial arts descend from Chinese Kung Fu.

Eduardo Fortuna Iirc, chinese martial arts actually came from Indian martial arts.

    • @Draceb
      @Draceb 7 років тому +4

Actually wing chun stems from White crane Plum blossom and snake style from a monk named Ng Mui and Chin, Na was a joint manipulation technique which was around as long as the shoalin temple or longer. Aikido is a very young art created by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 1900s. So much of Aikido will show up in other martial arts as it was developed from many other martial arts, he was also a soldier in the Japanese Army.

I remember when I sparred with Bruce. He took defeat very graciously and when I was teaching him my style I made sure I was extra patient with him. Because I could see his natural ability. As I later told Foreman when he asked for some help, Bruce was a good student because his Ego let him accept a true Master. R.I.P Bruce Lee,perhaps my best prodigy.

    Thank You for this.
I share your passion for Bruce Lee, His techniques, and The Art(s) It/ThemSelves.
I began training at Jhoon Goo Rhee's school of Tae Kwon Do in Washington, D.C. in 1972. I was referred by a Friend and immediately began realization that Aikido and other styles were somehow connected. There was an energy there. For me it was a desire for Self discipline and Self control that guided me. Having seen Bruce Lee in movies, certainly I was inspired. I still am.
Later in California I studied under Master Byong Yu. That was in 1973. The rest is history.
    I'm beginning Aikido training soon.
    Thank You again.

Greetings from Bangkok, Thailand. Truly amazing, whenever I watch any clip of Bruce Lee, always reminds me of being back in England, watching a movie at the old ODEON Cinema in my home town of Chelmsford, Essex. during the 60's & 70's, the ODEON always showed Bruce Lee movies. Bruce was an inspiration then & even more now, a superb personality & individual. Nice VDO, thanks so much for your detailed explanation of Bruce's fighting style. Growing up in Hongkong & participating in movies with his father certainly helped his ability to grow into an incredible young man, Anglo - Chinese style, also having a good knowledge of Tai Chi, Chi Gong. The Tao, once you develop your energy & realise the truth you have it for life. Awareness, Freedom & Peace , always. Congrats my friend.

One more subscriber :) Not sure if Lee trained in Aïkido, but I know he trained in Hapkido under Ji Han-Jae (whom he was introduced to by Jhoon Goo Rhee). And all these techniques you mention here can be found in Hapkido too (which is not a surprise since Aïkido and Hapkido share the same Aïkijujutsu roots). So, in the end, yes : we're all working with the same tool, which is human body, so the techniques are shared between many disciplines ;)

Yes. Bruce Lee did several techniques relating to the concepts of Aikido in Enter the Dragon, his last movie. The various throws he did on Sammo Hung at the opening scene and the leg and armpit drops at the final showdown with Han’s guards. A pity he passed on soon or we would get to witness how he could use Aikido to his advantage.

I was in a clinch head to head and when I felt the opponent's arm reach for an underhook, it just seemed natural to turn the arm like that and hold.

Great video! I started doing Judo at 8yo and ventured into some Chinese martial arts as a teenager & cross trained in some Wrestling, Hapkido & Kajukenbo. When I hit 30 I studied Wing Chun under Chris Chan (Chan Kam Shing) in San Francisco, who grew up & trained together with Bruce Lee in Hong Kong under Ip Man.
I've naturally used the Hiji Shimi on occasion. Jhoon Goo Rhee is a legend! But Bruce Lee also studied some Northern Styles of Kung Fu long before he left Hong Kong & developed some of his longer ranged kicking techniques during that time. To say, "He learned all of his kicking techniques under, Jhoon Goo Rhee" is a vast assumption! I don't doubt that he learned some & improved some things he already knew under him though... Like I said, Jhoon Goo Rhee is a legend, and wouldn't dare to try & say otherwise about him! Bruce had a knack for finding the best of the best to learn from. Again, great video! I know Aikido gets a bad wrap, some people are too closed minded to look deeper into traditional arts like it. Cheers!

Many people were jealous about Bruce, because he was spontaneous, and he was making money.
i was a Bruce Lee fan since i was 3/4 years old in 1979/80, my dad used to watch Bruce Lee Films.
I started to watch it too years after...
Then all of a sudden, i started digging in his history, searching...
Boy, did i get allot of stuff, about Bruce Lee.
I know stuff about him, that the mass doesn't know about him, like on enter the dragon, on stage, there was a young guy who challenged Bruce Lee, to a real fight, Bruce Accepted, and Bruce beat the shit out of him, and after the fight, Bruce gave the Boy lessons on how to fight, but the boy were real fast in whatever he was doing.
second, Bruce was a Street fighter.
he had 26 different styles, and combined it into JEET KUNE DO.
Bruce Lee is the Father of Mixed Martial Arts!!

If it hasn't already been mentioned, an "underground" fighter from the 90's used a lot of Aikido techniques (throws and lock-throws). He obviously was a master of other types of martial arts, also. It was a short-lived 90's PPV-style no-holds-barred style show called "Fight Zone." His nickname was "Badd Karma" and he claimed he was undefeated in underground fighting. This guy showed incredibly advanced Aikido-type of throws. Choreographed or not, it's well worth the look. No opponent could even land an attack due to his incredible defense. And he reminds you that you don't have to be a big heavyweight to do MMA like this.

Bruce was a student of every fighting style worldwide so it would make sense he would incorporate some Aikido into his fighting. If you go through his fight scenes from all the films you will see elements of Gung Fu, Wing Chun, Karate, Kendo, Savate, Aikido, Judo, Hapkido, Arnis/Escrima, American Boxing and even some Ninja stealth techniques. His fight scenes are almost masterclasses in technique study.

What my Sensei told me was that Jeet Kune Do roughly translates to "what ever works." When I was a kid I had always heard that Bruce Lee was a 10th degree black belt. According to my Sensei he never went past 3rd degree or Dan depending on the style. He did this, however, in several different styles (some of which are mentioned in the video). Bruce Lee took from all of this and used "what ever works."If any of this is in error; I will not be offended by corrections.

Bruce learned a lot of styles and used whatever worked for him. He was brilliant really, if it works be like water and let it flow... why put limits on oneself? Truly Bruce Lee had the absolute correct approach to martial arts. When everyone else was stuck in one style, he was using all the styles and is why he was so good at what he did.

The ancient Shaolin Temple monks do this and Grand Master Yip Man was extremely good at using his energy in balance. There are a few recent movies somewhat based on Yip Man. ..and they show how chi is very important to exercises like the wing chun practice Pac Sao watch it and you will see how the transfer of light or soft is balanced wight heavy or heard strenghts..great post and am glad you can appreciate the Chinese chi energy in martial arts. I myself ?? enjoy wing chun cause you don't have to be big in strength or size...great post though and again thanks.

This was a great video. It shows the intense passion and technical innovation Bruce Lee continually developed. Intrigued by why some of his grappling moves were labeled Aikido? Aikido is an absolutely beautiful and elegant martial art where the practitioners blend into and manipulate their opponent's energy. However, couldn't his techniques be labeled as Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Hapkido, Aiki Jitsu, or Sambo methods? Or couldn't his techniques be related to the multiplicity of wrestling styles emanating throughout history from Africa, ancient Egypt, the Philippines, Mongolia, India, Indonesian Silat, and English country wrestling among others world-wide. Isn't the aim of all grappling arts to blend with and utilize their opponent's energy to the advantage of the grappling practitioner? I know O Sensei Uyeshiba's Aikido was awesome! But I bet if we could time travel to 300 B.C. and show this video to some Indian warriors I bet ya someone would say wow that dude fights like my cousin!

There's no doubt Bruce Lee was aware and had an appreciation of aikido. In a Bruce Lee documentary somewhere here on UA-cam is his celeb friend, collaborator, and student, (the late) James Coburn saying how Bruce Lee came back from Hong Kong dejected at the state of Chinese martial arts and cited being inspired by more contemporary martial arts of the time including aikido. That's James Coburn quoting Bruce Lee.
However, I would refrain from getting overly excited. He was a a collector of techniques having had hundreds of martial arts books in his library so he may not have actually formally practiced aikido. He may have seen demos, books, and home movies and chose to incorporate them in his choreography.
Just because it's in the movies does not mean the portrayer is an expert on it even if it is Bruce Lee. Else, Mel Gibson would be a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Lethal Weapon), Christian Bale would be an expert in Keysi (The Dark Knight), and Jason Statham would be a krav maga expert.
In movies, they tend to use fight choreography that looks flashy and Bruce Lee is getting a lot of help selling the moves with his stuntmen (including a young Jackie Chan) who are sacrificing themselves to make it look exciting. It's not all Bruce Lee's prowess and ki doing the throws!
Secondly Bruce Lee knew several hapkido masters, including Ji-Han Jae so he may have been incorporating aikido's cousin, hapkido, rather than aikido although the kokyu nages are distinctively trademark aikido moves whereas hapkido favours more joint lock throws similar to kotegaeshi.
However, it is still exciting and inspiring to see that the most iconic martial arts figure of all time had an appreciation for aikido.

I don't think that Bruce Lee needed a choreographer like a lot of actors need today, he had his own style and he used a lot of the same moves in all his movies because he was one of the youngest advance martial artists at his age at the time he was martial arts

    • @TheGreenfrog140

A lot of things you said I feel it's correct except the part Mel Gibson, Christian bale etc .. yes expert choreographers directing and helping them to make the actor appear professional fighter but not in the case of Bruce lee. In his case he himself is a highly professionally trained and a genius fighting choreographer himself with many ideas.
But besides being instensely trained I think bruce lee had the God's gift of reflexes ... and may have had the an advantage of having a slight strong bone structure from parents. Even if he had a strong bone structure he cannot he stronger then blacks. They are god gifted atheletes. But Bruce seems to be having the advantage of great reflex .. that he polished with hard work and passionate training..
I think through his demonstration God wants us to see that you don't have to be huge, tall, very strong, to be able to defend yourself..
It's amazing that Bruce was only average height of 5 feet 7 inches tall and so lean .. light weight person yet he is considered to be the best fighter ever in the world..

Stuntmen have been there and will always be there yet there's a great difference when it comes to Bruce Lee. Somewhere Bruce said " I don't act, I'm just doing my things... And this is the foundation of his uniqueness. No actor, no martial artist is as famous in the UA-cam like him, those seemingly against him they don't reduce him in aught except adding more and more to his fame. Someone said that last e in Lee stands for everlasting, it is yes indeed I agree and I deem that statement very devine. Nothing good and full of modest except it's devine, the statement is having both qualities. Bruce's work is everlasting, much younger generations today are as enthusiastic to his work as though they were made and done just a moment ago. Many who have tried to tarnish his image ended up having their own tarnished.

      @@TheGreenfrog140
I've never known it to be scientific that blacks have stronger bones than those of other races, you can just tell us if it is scientifically. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him once said "the best of a human body is in its smallness" that is in having a bigger body one is having more fats and in having a smaller body one is having lesser fats. It's normally determined in percentage of body weight. According to the doctors who medically checked Bruce Lee's body or healthy shortly before his death, they said he was having zero percent of fats in his body in other words he was a complete and pure mass of muscles and bones, for that sake they termed him the fittest man in the world. I don't know if this record has ever been broken to-date. According to physics of motion, energy and mass e=Mc square, the faster you are in motion the heavier you become, very much the same way a fired bullet can cause a creature weighing many many heavier to even taken airbone and flung down a distance away. We are all in awe of bullets. Bruce developed himself into something I'd dare say bigger than bullets, why because bullets have no will of themselves.. I again dare say he must have inherited some secrets from his teacher Ip man in matter of eating and frugality and keeping lean and also meditation when once he said " you must empty your mind... He meant you've to spend alot of time doing meditation. Meditation once blended with frugal healthy eating and a determination to become the best the product produced is the Bruce Lee we know.

I think Aikido is very compatible with Wing chuan kung fu.
Both are suitable for close combat and do not use great power.
That is, they agree with each other in terms of softly controlling stiffness.
Bruce Lee was a well-known Seattle dojo in the United States, and Judo was practiced, but it was surprising that Aikido was incorporated into the this movie, Enter the dragon.
Because it was accomplished in 1973, 15 years before Steven Seagal came out.
    Thanks a lot for posted.

Bruce knew himself and his physique really well and knew which techniques worked for him and which ones did not from various martial arts like aikido, karate, fencing, savate, kung-fu etc., not just based on his physique but also his fighting experience, so he took all of that which worked for him and put it together to make a "way" called "Jeet Kun Do", so he was more wholistic in his way as a fighter.
If someone asks him anytime whether he wanted JKD to be like something written on stone, he would say "be like water, my friend, water can flow or it can crash", so by that it means "whatever suits you or works out for you can be JKD for you".
