Really liked this, thanks for doing it! An old girlfriend had a new one of these back in the day, it was ADR27A emissionised and a real slug. I couldn't believe how slow it was, as compared to a Datto 1200 I had owned previously, which was moderately zippy and to be fair, a great little car. Those A-Series Nissan OHV engines were dead-set terrific units, very durable, reliable, fuss-free. Btw you'd quite often see these donks utilised in small forklifts, running on LPG. Of course we hated the 120Y in-period, with its tiny, unmistakable pea-shooter exhaust and the ludicrous sound they made on over-run. But my best mate's mum had her 120Y for almost 40 bloody years, it served Helen perfectly until her death, and may still be going today.
the Datsun 120y. . it was the best car I ever had I had it with 38.000 on the clock . never had any troubles with it. it had done 140 .000 miles on the clock when I dearly parted with it only few to rust .I would have a new one if they made them again 😢 .
Indeed bruh. My grandma used to drive these and often did a power slide every time coming out of a junction. What a legend car tho. But now it has gone missing. Wth
@@peterdanharding6041 Which is why they are heavier than the pevious model, with the same engine? They are more refined than it though & still lighter & more economical that Carolla or Escorts. But the Civic was a better, newer design.
@@peterdanharding6041 Shows us how terrible engines were back then. Even budget cars these days would use less fuel (or at most, the same level of fuel) and be twice as quick.
As a young boy in the late seventies, I remember our neighbour across the road had one of these parked in his driveway, and to my young eyes it looked like sporty as hell. I imagined it would go like stink compared to my Dad's car (Opel Kadett). Illusions well and truly shattered :-)
I drove mine for 200,000km over 11 years. Lacklustre performance was improved by opening out the main jet a tad...no faster top speed..just got there quicker. Mechanic said "Bury boot into the carpet in top and when it stops accelerating...just cruise there. Spent hours at 5,000 rpm.....never broke the engine. New Japanese rings and a deglaze of the bores @180,000km...and a replacement clutch because it was 2/3 worn.... The speedo needle slop was from not lubricating the cable drive. The woeful handling was not bothering to overhaul the front shocks and refilling with Tellus oil; not replacing sway bar bushes; and not keeping up with replacing worn rear shocks. Vinyl upholstery smell could be overcome by full sheepskin seatcovers...ah, wet wool. Clutch needed adjustment and better carpet to stop that slap and "boing" sound..... Driving that car allowed me to save enough for my first house...and I sold the 120Y for 65% of what I had paid for it 11 years before.
Cool video, mate. It's a surprisingly original car. I love the kerb alarm next to the nearside rear wheel lol. I haven't driven a Datto 120 WHY in ages. I fondly remember the lacklustre performance, speedo needle slop, woeful handling, toxic smelling vinyl upholstery when hot, and the way the clutch used to slap onto the firewall when fully disengaged-the carpet was worn out lol. Your video made me reminisce of driving my mate's old car, back in 92. Thank you.
So good to hear this engine sound again. My first car was a datsun 120y 2 door wagon and i loved it. Thanks for bringimg back some of the best memories of my life
Brilliant stuff guys - well done i think you have opened up a whole new market for PDrive - Ps love the old Datto 120Y and looking forward to seeing the old school cars being tested with today's equipment!! LOVED IT..!!
That was great. Do more like this! I had a 120y with an A15, 32/36 Weber (off my Escort), hot air intake. Extractors, exhaust, ported head and intake, running 11:1 compression and a mild cam. On the old G-Tech it did 0-100 in 9.12 and the 1/4 mile in 16.4. Was so much fun though. Sold it after blowing the 3rd 4sp and about the 5th diff. Wish I still had it. Much like the RS2000. The TA22 Celica. The VB V8 Manual. The Starion. The EL XR8 and the EF XR6. The WK LS statesman… All worth 5-20x what I sold them for. None of them sold for more than $3000. The pre 90’s ones though… none sold for more than $2000.
One Man Band Woodworks I know! It's a surprisingly original car, and in great condition, too. I love the kerb alarm next to the nearside rear wheel lol.
Great video! Fantastic example of a late model 120y (1978 I think). I remember this actual car being for sale at a dealership in the Blue Mountains, Blackheath I think, several years back. Glad someone bought it and is enjoying this. great little classic!
just remember that this thing is actually perfectly fast enough for most purposes. Imagine the huge reduction in consumption of resources if we all actuallly just drove cars that were only big enough and fast enough for what we need
Bought my girlfriend a shit-brown coloured Datto 120y for her first car for $400 in the early 90s. She had to carry a FM radio on the front seat and a massive screw driver to belt the starter motor once in a while. So sorry that I gave it away afew years later...would have loved it as a project car these days.
Wrong. They were a 1071cc engine. They fit into the 1200 class. An A series Morris motor that was licensed to Nissan commonly found in a Morris Minor and Morris Mini, the latter in a transverse setup. Many other BMC iterations sported this engine. What I loved about Nissan is that they built an alloy head for this motor.
LOL. I owned one of these as my first car but mine had a lot more rust and was even slower. I don't think mine could make 100 kph as it was too flogged out. 4 on the floor, very little go.
Awesome video!! Thanks for the upload 👍, one question please, exactly what is an econometer please? Does it have anything to do with battery performance or fuel consumption?? Thanks.
Hi, I love the econometer in this vid too. I'm not an expert on how it works but I always noticed them in cars that had them. It runs off a vacuum/air intake tube, so it's related to air intake increasing when you give it more welly, and hence fuel consumption increases. That's why the needle flails about so fast between gear changes. Cars I remember having them were the first gen Fiat Uno 45/60S and Polo Formel E. Actually most BMWs, come to think of it. A few manufacturers paired the suction to a pressure switch instead making it turn on or off lights on the dash instead of moving a needle - Toyota Corolla GL (1987-1990 models), Peugeot 505 'Econoscope', high spec Renault 18s. Fiat in Brazil, which was still making the Fiat Uno 10 years ago, badged the 'Mille', reintroduced this gauge and called the model the Mille Economy. You can also add your own to your car with a pressure switch and two or three bulb set up (green for good, yellow/alright, red for burn rubber etc) if you want to 'game-ify' your driving for economy.
HI Helen, never get rid of it. I had an orange one with a white vinyl roof, my first car from 1997-1999. It hadn't even done 100K but rusted badly. I couldn't afford to store it. Only one wreckers back then would take it and they gave me nothing for it. Hopefully the engine lives on in someone's else's car. I kept the rear badge from the boot. It's great hearing the engine start and rev in this video.
Over 20 second 1/4 times, that's a good bang for the buck on track days. Most people are dumb and bring something that only gives them around half that much fun time.
kerb weight 810kg. i think the equivalent nissan today is the Nissan Sylphy kerb weight 1160 to 1250. I have never been in a sylphy, but i found a ford focus more cramped in the back than i remember the 120Y being The environment is paying the price first for the production then the lugging around of those extra 350kg of crash protection (against other 1.5 ton cars) and needless comforts and 'infotainment' systems (so distracting you will need that extra crash protection). think how efficient and better for the environment it would be to make cars as simple and light (and pleasant to be in) as the 120Y with a modern fuel efficient engine.

Yep! Don't forget these class of cars were introduced during and after the Oil Crisis in the 70s and they served a purpose!
It's depend on car maintenance.

love to listen to more of the classic beauties exhaust sounds..!!

Just bought one as a tribute to my mum 😌
God bless you. brings back memories to me too. thanks . i will try too
My first car was a 1976 sedan in this colour… best car I ever owned!!!
This was awesome. You guys should definitely do more of these older cars, it's really interesting to see some of them unlike just the latest Stuff
Awesome car very reliable my DADS was at 889 000 kms and just kept on going.
it was retired in 2001 but i wish we could of kept it.
More of this! Great stuff.
there needs to be more of this! Older cars are gems when it comes to this

ok. thats a beautiful engine sound. beautiful memories
That little 120Y is still going strong. Very healthy engine for one of those cars.
🙂
Wow what a car! Used to own a Datsun 1200 (the model before this one) had the same donk. If only they made cars like this now days!
I'm surprised by the decibel readings
This was great, more classics please 😁

My 1st car, same colour too. Memories........
Was going to be my first car, but couldn't get the finance . !!
my 1st driving lesson car in 80s
Great cars. Light. With a modern 1.2 engine they'd do amazing fuel economy. Modern cars got too heavy.
The grass on my front lawn grew a full centimetre during the 0-100 km/h test.
I read a review once that the exhaust note was similar to an unsatisfying fart. But this still sounds better then modern cars of its kind
You must have read the same review I did! Each new generation of cars only makes the baby Dato sound better.
That was great. Do more like this!

This is the Datsun 120Y. A small vantage car full of paradise and room and the Top speed over twice the Zone.
My dad owned one for almost 20 years
this is soooo good i cant stop watching it
I love these old Dotson cars , my grandma had an old 1970 something two door boxy Datsun car that was so cool !
Love it. More classics please.
bit late for April fools jokes isn't it? just kidding, loved it. the ground breaking econometer still worked too!
One Man Band Woodworks I know! It's a surprisingly original car, and in great condition, too. I love the kerb alarm next to the nearside rear wheel lol.
A year late, but its just a vacuum gauge relabelled
we had an Orange 2 dr as a kid .Things was a raspy little thing
Great video! Fantastic example of a late model 120y (1978 I think). I remember this actual car being for sale at a dealership in the Blue Mountains, Blackheath I think, several years back. Glad someone bought it and is enjoying this. great little classic!
My grandfather drove this car 😢 brings back hood memory seeing this..
Thanks for the video! I had one it was beige as a first car!! This is a prime example!! Long live the dat-dat !!!
just remember that this thing is actually perfectly fast enough for most purposes. Imagine the huge reduction in consumption of resources if we all actuallly just drove cars that were only big enough and fast enough for what we need
It's a racing car compared to my Suzuki LJ50
Reminds you of how it was before we complain of current mid sized cars performance!
Great video guys, I really enjoyed this, would love to see more videos like this, of stock older cars.
Nice work. Good to mix things up. Keep it coming.
This was my first car back in 1981. My dad's old one. The real problem was RUST.
Aww it's adorable lol.
Love the old school cars!!! Do more :)))
I can't believe this is my dad's first car
He says it is somewhere in the rural area with his uncle
Hope I can see or even own it soon

This is a classic car.
Could you please do a Holden Premier? Awesome old car!
This was fantastic, loved it!
Still better than a great wall
😂😂😂 fake wall
Wall? Has to do what with anything?
back when 4cyl engines sounded good
awesome!!!!Greets from Belgium!
Beautiful car what a gem 👌
Please do more of this! I love it!
My uncle had a white one many years ago and his son used to call it the beast.
It’s so little, so simple, so old, so cute, so bluuuu, but oh so great and I absolutely love it! I want :-)
Would you do a 300zx bi-turbo?
My mate had one could not kill it
That was pretty quick, compared to a mollusc, or a house brick. I am impressed.

Is that a original rims of that datsun ?
2:14 Econometer? Our 120Y´s instrument cluster included temp and fuel gages there.
They must have added it as part the minor facelift package of this later build.
I grew up with this car except we had a white one. So many cross country trips to the coast with the fam. Sigh, I feel like crying
0-70km/h is surprisingly quick!
An Australian made Nissan Sunny aka Datsun 120Y; an econometer was a tachometer for fuel economy.

Nearly 20 seconds for 0-100.
But wow it sounds like a beastly sportscar, love it lol
My Suzuki LJ 50 will take a minute, and is lathargic and strained above 70. Nor can it corner like this Datsun
