    Hi everyone! I decided to make my own VEGAN version of the original video done by Brothers Green Eats titled "How to live on $3 a day". So this is going to be How To Live on $3 (£2) a day VEGAN STYLE.
    Original video by Brothers Green Eats - How to live on $3 a day - • How To Live On $3 a Da...
    I'm tired of people mistaking the vegan diet to be something only the "elite" can do. Veganism is for EVERYONE and some of the cheapest foods on the planet are VEGAN by nature. Animal products have only become somewhat cheap because of extreme factory farming, government subsidisation and a whole load of other sketchy political reasons. Vegan food including rice, beans/legumes/lentils, potatoes, pasta, corn, etc. are some of the cheapest foods out there and you can do a LOT with these basics.
    I took on a challenge to live on $3 or £2 per day for five days, and this was what I ate for day 1, and what I've purchased up to this point.I did this at the end of November - beginning of December.
    Here are some of the "rules" and guidelines that I made for myself -
    1. I can only spend £10 total in the five days of the challenge on food & drinks, with the exception of condiments and spices that I already had in the house.
    2. I will attempt to make each meal different and not eat the same thing every day (so not really doing any bulk meal prepping or something like that which I would normally do!)
    3. I will try to be as creative and healthy as possible!
    What I purchased (so far) -
    500g dry chick peas - £1.09
    Asda smart price spaghetti 500g- £0.30
    Potatoes 2.5kg - £1.69
    Tesco everyday value white rice (1kg) - £0.45
    Carrots 1kg - £0.50
    KTC chopped tomatoes 3 cans - £1.00
    Tesco everyday value porridge oats (1kg) - £0.75
    asda smart price mixed veggies frozen (1kg) - £0.77
    asda frozen button sprouts (1kg) - £1.00
    6 bananas - £0.62
    Tesco everyday value soy milk 1L - £0.59
    TOTAL SPENT - £8.76
    What I have left - £1.24

      It depends on the quality you're looking for. Here in Finland, from Lidl you can get soy milk for like 1,30€ (which is like a little over 1£, or about 1$ I guess?) but it's disgusting compared to Alpro, in my opinion. But Alpro again is about 2-2,50€ (about 3$ I guess?), so that's a downside. But personally I am ready to pay a bit more for a soy milk that I actually like to drink.

      I'm on snap & it's so hard to budget especially when your allergic to so much (pretty much vegan). I LOVE seeing videos like this. it's so helpful. you should do a video on $200 a month ($50 a week) since that's the common assistance budget & vlog about how you felt, weight gain/loss ect.

    • @TheDumbassstunts
      @TheDumbassstunts 8 років тому +1

      +Rosemarie Tsamas it's a shame you get $200 a month to spend on food and complain about it.

    This is really great, you did a fantastic job creating a variety of meals so far :) Also, as someone who has had to live on under $3 a day before, the food you bought and prepared was realistic. And I totally agree that condiments and spices shouldn't be factored in to a short 5 day challenge. Challenges like this help bring awareness to poverty and food insecurity, and I think the negative comments about you "cheating" really take away from that message and make it about the insignificant details. Keep on going you're doing great!

    • @chloerackley9125
      @chloerackley9125 8 років тому +14

      +notideallife the same approach doesnt work for everyone, for me personally the 'in your face, this is horrible, people are selfish, go vegan' approach got me thinking and made me feel like it was really important that I considered converting. If I had just stumbled across one of these videos I may have just thought "this is cool, i'll just budget for a little cheese too".

    • @user-jc1xl5lj1t
      @user-jc1xl5lj1t 4 роки тому +3

      Everyone needs a different kind of activism. For me, I was vegetarian my whole life but couldn't seem to give up dairy desserts even though I knew a bit about the terrible factory farm industry. Once I actually saw videos about dairy cows and chickens in these terrible conditions however, it prompted me to become vegan. Everyone has a different way of converting. No need for the (ironically) passive aggressive comments about "aggressive vegans." It works for some people. It doesn't for others. That's all. :)

    After making restaurant style fried rice for years, I didn't think I would be satisfied with a version that didn't include chicken stock. However, I was wrong. Made the chickpea fried rice last night, and it was delicious. The taste will never be a copy of the original dish, but I liked that, despite the inclusion of sesame oil, it actually tasted "lighter" than ones made with meat and stocks.

    👩‍👩‍👦I like that you're a "wing-it" kinda gal, & that you have a great sense of humor. I'm not a vegan....yet, though presently, I'm trying to transition (back) to vegetarian. I have some resistance from my hub & daughter, but I'm working on them. I remember Michael Pollan's mantra: eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. It's becoming my mantra, too. Thanks for your vids--they're informative without being preachy, & fun in spots too. Keep up the good work.

    • @pentrubarbati
      @pentrubarbati 8 років тому +14

      +Nenad Gavrilovic Lentils Beans Spinach Oats Peanut Butter expensive yea right .... all protein sources and also at BulkPowders you get 5KG of Brown Rice Powder 2 servings/day 3 months for 50 pounds ....

    • @lt3381
      @lt3381 8 років тому +15

      +Nenad Gavrilovic News flash. If you are getting enough calories, you are more than likely getting enough protien UNLESS you are just eating potato chips and soda.

    • @lt3381
      @lt3381 8 років тому +14

      ***** You can still get that from nuts and beans. Vegan protien powder too. Just look up vegan body builders. Also, I belive the strongest man in Germany is vegan aswell.

    The chickpea and potato patties look delicious and so easy to put together! Do you have any suggestions about the measurements? I am pretty sure you just maybe eyeballed everything which is what I usually do too, but if you have some kind of recipe or something I would really love to see it! But I guess I'll try it out anyways! Nice vid tho :) I like your channel!

    What a neat challenge! I think you did pretty well with what you bought. Can't wait to see what you cook up next! Also, food prices seem reasonable in London, I think it is more expensive right now to shop in Canada with our dollar being so low :(

    Hello I love your channel! Gives me lots of meal prep ideas. I just have a reasonable video suggestion. Could there be an honest review from your vegan friend on the recipes? And if you can do a more challenging if they can review a food you prepped 4 days ago. I think it'll be really cool

      The Hex Family
      I would like to see an Australian Version too "How to live on $(lowest possible cost) a day as a vegan"...
      ... Though it would vary a bit between areas - some people might live in a smaller town or remote area though, kicking up the cost especially if their nearest shop is a Roadhouse in the Outback.
