Here's Why The Cheapest Mercedes-Benz is Often the Best Mercedes=Benz - C-Class Review and Guide

  • SOLD Book values on older Mercedes-Benz cars show an interesting phenomenon - the entry-level C-Class loses a far less significant portion of its value, and at a certain point, can even by the same money as an S-Class that cost three times as much when new. But does that mean you should opt for the S? If you're budget minded, then absolutely not.
One reason the S depreciates like it fell off a cliff while the C holds better value is the lack of complication with the C - by necessity and design, they are simpler, more reliable cars that are much easier to maintain than the higher dollar Mercedes-Benz vehicles loaded with complicated systems and high tech gadgetry. While the S is certainly an incredible Q-Ship and one of the finest vehicles to drive when in tip-top condition, maintaining it to that level will cost one hell of a lot more than in the C.
So take it ass you will - yes, the S is a superior machine in terms of engineering, but the C is engineered to be simple and reliable. Full review and test drive by Bill of a 2007 C 230 Sport. The car is SOLD

    Hi Bill,
These C classes are incredibly popular here in Bulgaria, a small country from eastern europe. Most of the W203's here are diesel, with the majority of them being the C220 CDI. These rust, but nowhere as bad as the W202's. Incredibly reliable engines overall, and bulletproof drivetrain. And a very good sound system I might add.

@@Callsignethiopia No, they drive better cars. The Mercedes is the basic to go, if you want something a little bit nicer than an econobox. I mean, you can pick one as low as for €1k. €4,5k, if you wanna better trim model and good maintenance history. Of course the C55 is going to cost you €15k, but you can get a nice Benz for much less. I mean my underpaid school teacher is driving one of these. I doubt that they are terrible to maintain.

I completely agree. These were great cars! My friend bought one of the first of this generation around 2000. Despite being a "baby benz", it was very well made with great materials. It went down the highway like a dream.
It had some shocking electrical gremlins fresh from the factory. If I remember correctly, a turn signal light would fault, and the car would automatically use the fog light instead. Crazy stuff. Lots of warranty trips for that!
I'd consider these a used car bargain if you can find a clean one. I can't believe how cheap they are. The oldest I could find were from 2005ish. I'm surprised there aren't more survivors a bit older.

My aunt had this same car in silver, gorgeous car, I believe it was quite reliable. She also had an '03 C230 Kompressor which I also owned for a couple years, it needed a bit more maintenance but never had any major issues. Great driving cars, only sold mine because I needed a larger vehicle.
If you need something smaller that gets good mileage but you also want a smooth quiet ride, solid build quality, and a luxurious interior, the C class is the way to go. I drove mine from LA to Portland several times and that trip felt like half the distance in the C230 compared to many other cars I've done it in. It's not a 0 to 60 monster but it just eats up highway miles, it'll cruise at along 100+ as well as a big Benz. Just watch out for cops, that's an expensive ticket...

Bill is spot on in his review of this generation C class. I inherited a 2002 C320 estate in MA and it has significant rust, especially the passenger side front door. The interior quality is not up to Mercedes standards either. It does run nicely with the V6 engine and gets reasonable fuel economy. There is no doubt the last 2 years of this generation were better built cars.

I enjoy watching your videos and have been for a while but didn't see this until tonight. You posted this two years ago and I'm sure you sold by now it so you won't be upset with me. I'm a big Mercedes person. I own a 2010 C300 and maintain it well. Before this, I had a 2006 C280 (one year before the 2007 - the last W203). For those who want to buy a W203, 6 cylinder, beware of the infamous balance shaft issue that plagues all of them from 2004-2007, unfortunately. And it plagued my 2006, too. I won't get into that issue here since you can google it. I wound up trading in my 2006 for my 2010 and never had the problem fixed. The car will still run decent with the check engine light on but if you live in an emissions state like me, you can't pass inspection. The repair bill for the balance shaft (it's really the sprocket but you do the entire thing) is around $4,500. The high bill has to do with the labor; it's an engine out job...there's no other way to do it. My understanding is that Mercedes finally caved and now will pay half the repair bill, after a lot of legal action and complaints. But it's still a $2,000 repair bill. I'd have a repair like this done by a Mercedes dealer, not a private mechanic. A private mechanic will be cheaper but may not do it correctly and you'll still have timing problems. So for anyone seeing this now, even though the W203 is aging, some people still desire them, so be careful. Ask if the repair has been done. If you find one that's low mileage like the one in the video, be prepared: somewhere between 70k-100k miles your balance shaft WILL FAIL. It's a guarantee, not a maybe. But to end on a positive, I'm a big fan of the C class and love the W204. I enjoyed my W203 aside from the balance shaft issue (and some poor interior quality issues) and also owned a 1987 190E 2.6 liter (straight six). They're great.

Just an important FYI on these c230 203 Mercedes Benz. M272 engine serial numbers below “2729..30 468993” and M273 serial numbers below “2739..30 088611” (generally, produced prior to Sept 2006): M272 engines are susceptible to wear in the balance shaft gear, which can cause the right camshaft to go out of time and cause catastrophic engine damage. Preventative repairs are ~$4000. Always check the engines serial number just to be safe.
I owned a brand new 2005 C230 Kompressor for nearly 3 years and I loved the car during ownership. I never had an issue with the car and the dealership had an excellent service department. I traded it in 2008 for a BMW Z4. But not once did I regret buying the c230 Kompressor. It was quick, fuel efficient and it had a comfortable quiet cabin ride. I never experienced the buzzy engine noise mentioned.

I think the W211-W212 with the V8 is the best bang for the buck. You get a ridiculous amount of power in a mid-size car and enough tech in the way of comfort and safety and style to keep up with the Jones's.
