UFO Performing live from 1977.[1] Michael Schenker(Guitar) Phil Mogg(Vocals) Pete Way(Bass) Paul Raymond(Keyboards/Rhythm Guitar/B.Vocals) Andy Parker(Drums)
Schenker has always been the most melodic and precise guitar player in rock, every note means something and not just inane twiddling of scales. His solos are pieces of art that should be more widely acknowledged.
The Lights Out album is one of my all time favorite albums, just incredible. Schenker's sound, the songs, Mogg's raw voice, the production, everything!
People ask us hardcore UFO fans what is it all about, what's the one thing that puts UFO above everyone else in the rock & roll business. It's the gallop, that's right when Michael Shenker & Pete Way played together there was a gallop (like a horse at full speed) effect in the music. Horsepower was what made UFO the best.
Oh you nailed it: Gallop. Driving Force. I believe that's the quality of what has made this my Go-To Song default for 40+ years, when doing something 110% and second best doesn't count: on the track, on a fast wave, a big mountain, a big hill; when you need to pull out all the stops and just go....that's UFO.👍
"Who made who...who made you..." The gifts of GOD are without repentance. Saw UFO fronting AC/DC on the American Tour at the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee. Michael Schenker was mesmerizing...AC/DC came and watched him from behind the veloured stage curtains. By the time Schenker lifted up from his pedal, our faces were on the floor between knees of our skirts. When that happened, there was a loud gasp...and deafening applause. Schenker was phenomenal! Wispy, unassuming, uncharacteristic, and pure flying V phenomenal guitarist. We humbly thank the LORD for Michael and his family, especially his dad, according to his brother Rudolph, a/k/a, the Scorpions, for allowing Michael to leave school and play for us. Thank you LORD!!!
It's a shame because the Paul Chapman era was pretty strong and he was a first-rate guitar player. Just had the misfortune of being right on the heels of Michael Schenker of all people.
Michael; is one of the most fine guitar players in the World and in Rock history. He's a virtuoso. In my opinion, the best guitarist from Germany. His guitar parts and solos, are always complex, beautiful, intrincated and melodic.🎸
same here!! I remember back in high school the UFO double live album (strangers in the night) was a must bring to a KEG party along with 2 -3 Led Zeppelin albums
Strangers in the night. One of the best live albums ever. Saw UFO in Oakland around 1978. Blown away. Sat 1st row balcony looking down on Michael shedding on his flying V Gibson
That was their third album, actually. They had two albums in more acid rock/space rock style in 1970 and 1971. "Phenomenon" was the first one with Schenker.
In my opinion Michael Schenker is one of the greatest guitarist of his time he influenced me for sure and a whole generation of great guitarists. a lot of people today don’t know who he is and that’s really sad. I can say without reservation that strangers in the night UFO live is absolutely positively one of the greatest live rock albums ever bar none
I agree about Schenker but, Led Zeppelins 1978's the song remains the same album is IMO #1 and Jimmy Page is #1. Schenker is top 5 for sure. I was 14-15 years old at that time and had dreams (like many others)of making it in a rock band but I soon realized I did not have near the talent needed to actually make a living doing it. Definitely Rock's best period. Another couple runner up's on live albums are, Scorpions 1978's Tokyo tapes(another Schenker) and Rush's 1976 Rush live album All the worlds a stage, Geddy's voice was in it's prime and talk about under rated guitarists, Alex Lifeson never gets mentioned in the GOAT discussion
I bought that Live UFO Album in 1978 when a senior in high school. Still have it and a bunch of other live acts on vinyl as well from that era. Double live Gonzo , Outlaws “ bring’em back alive” , live Who & Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and countless hundreds of others . Anyone who was fortunate enough to live through that great era in music back then knows what I’m talking about here. Never again will we see such an amount of amazing talents and music . Today’s stuff just doesn’t cut it in my opinion.
@@mpreiss7780 : Not a fair comparison at all. Zeppelin's roots were in Blues Rock. UFO were out and out Heavy Rock, the forerunner to Heavy Metal. Different genre entirely.
UFO have been my favourite band ever since I heard side 3 of Strangers played on a radio show in1979. For me that version of Lights Out is the finest five minutes of lead guitar I've ever heard. My only regret is that despite seeing them many times I never saw them with Michael Schenker in the fold because he had left them by the time Strangers was released. Then when he rejoined them in 95 I was working in Asia and missed out again.
Accidentally seen UFO's Stangers in the Night tour in Minneapolis in 1978 as we were going to see Rick Derringer. We never even heard of UFO before even though they were headlining. We almost walked out of the show after Rick Derringer, as we thought UFO had to be some weird punk/new wave band, but decided we would stay for a couple songs to check them out and were BLOWN AWAY! (We were also tripping out bawls big time that night) I never forget it! It then lead us to discover the Scorpions, and since then 45 years ago, I've been a UFO/MSG and Scorpions fanatic, and amateur guitarist, trying to pick up and learn their music. (But the tripping days are long past)
I saw AC/DC open up for UFO at the tower theater in Philly back in the late 70`s. Bon Scott and Angus,Schenker and UFO,One of the best concerts EVER. I will never forget that night!
spydrmike1 You lucky person you. These two bands are two of my favourite bands of all time. Their music during the late 70's was simply awesome and very inspirational to many bands afterwards.
As Michael Schenker is acknowledged as one of the best guitarist of all time it is is a shame that Phil Mogg is so underrated. He had one of the best voices in rock and in polls or documentaries about great voices in rock he is often forgotten. Shout Out to Phil!👌❤️
Diese Hymne von UFO verdient es, als Soundtrack in einem Spielfilm die ersten 5 Minuten zu füllen. Die Richtung des Filmes ist dann gloriös vorgespurt!
Schenker is definitely a prime example of “your favorite guitarist’s favorite guitarist”. The licks were always just perfect to add in and elevate the tracks. The solos then come and they’re always blistering and high energy. You never get half assed stuff from Schenker
I can't believe I'm seeing this....... I was a young "roadie" at a concert in Portland, OR back in 1980, and it was Head East, UFO, and a no-name band opening, I was 17 and helped with all the set-up.... I remember UFO being the best of all of them, and I was so proud to help set things up. It was amazing. I feel so grateful.
"I was born Oct 29, 1961 UFO & Thin Lizzy are the most woefully underarted bands to ever exist !" By whom? See the interview with Ritchie Blackmore where he considered joining Phil Lynott. Nobody underrates Thin Lizzy; they just forget them. Even the Beatles will be forgotten, and the sooner the better!
Man this brings back some fantastic memories. I saw UFO with Michael Schenker at the Glasgow Apollo back in the day. He was and is a fantastic guitarist but as 14 year old witnessing his art was a life changing moment. Strangers is the best live album ever!!
I am 62 and saw UFO in the early 1970`s at the Nottingham boat club. I spent the whole set with my mouth open as I could not get over how fantastic they were as a band. Michael Schenker stood to one side with Gibson flying V between his legs, blonde hair hanging down, and the licks he played was absolutely spellbinding. One of the best gigs I ever saw. I still think they are the most underrated band along with Trapeze. Unfortunately, when Schenker left I felt they went down hill. No replacement ever really matched him and their writing went down hill.
I'm awestruck every time I watch and listen to Michael Schenker's guitar playing. Looking at this video reminds me why I've been a huge UFO and MSG fan for decades.
I'm 62 and saw them live many times in the mid 70's, and for us rock guitar nuts, he was a legend. Cleaner and faster than Jimmy Page, Beck and the other guitar greats of the era, and UFO shows were super powerful. Just a great pure rock band...
WOW! What a memory blast! Almost had forgotten about UFO. One of my favorites in the late seventies. When you get my age, some of the best things to do is reminisce about the "good old days".
If you don't get goose bumps and chills listening to UFO, especially Michaels solo, you may want to put 911 (or 999) on speed dial. I listened to them several times a day. And seeing them live was a real thrill ride!
Too right the energy from these concerts back then was incredible. Schenker is a wonderful feel player. His work on Obsession is phenomenal pardon the pun.
These guys were quite frankly one of the most underrated rock acts maybe ever! I enjoyed my teen years in the 70's and was lucky enough to see them live a few times and folks I'm telling you they were fantastic!
That's really cool you must've saw some great bands! My friends and I had heard about the concerts in Oakland? I think or somewhere in Cali but being from Buffalo it was just too far away 😂
I was also in my teens in the70s in Chicago and we all knew about UFO from around '76 onward. Lights out in London, too hot to handle, rock bottom, they had a lot of well known hits that got a lot of airplay back then. Now all the "classic rock" stations have forgotten they existed. No clue why.
UFO is one of the greatly under rated bands from the 70's and early 80's they just played good rock and roll.Saw them in Sacramento California in 1981 with Aldo Nova was a great show.
I remember about 40 years ago hearing that song on a pirate shortwave radio station, got me interested in UFO. Great Band and 1 of the greatest legendary guitarists ever. Nobody plays like that 🎸
These two bands were my staples growing up, every time i saw them it was a party, a hoot. Got to know UFO over time, lovely guys, "enjoyed the odd drink". Happy memories, RIP Paul and Pete.
I frickin love UFO. Michael Schenker has been 1 of my favorite guitar players since I 1st heard their live album in 1979. That guy could jam with the best of them & along with his melodic playing, that makes for a great guitar player in my book🤘
I've heard that song 100 times and it doesn't get old. In so doing, I wore out a couple of 8-tracks, a handful of cassettes and a few LP records. ''Strangers in the Night'' rates as one of my all-time favorites. Double-live and excellent. That guitar player is going to be a star some day.
Fantastic! I was fortunate to see this 1978 - last show of the tour - Max Webster, UFO, & Rush - all for $7 at the Seattle Coliseum. Rock & Roll at its best!
It surprises me more real rock devotees aren't demanding more UFO on this channel. One of the best live shows ever - if you want to go to a show, catch a buzz, and hear some real electric rock and roll. Most definitely, one of the top five British rock bands of the 70's.
I saw them at the Capitol Theater in Flint Michigan in the Early 70's. I'll never forget it. Michael Schenker stayed to the rear until it was time to solo. In head to toe black leather he comes to the front of the stage, stops, jams that white flying V into his right leg, every eye in the place on him. After the blazing solo he would retreat to the rear giving the audience time to close their mouths and reflect on what they just saw and heard.
Maestro de Maestros ,me pongo de pie ,que gallito en la lira ,todo un virtuoso este Sr en la guitarra muy pocos de ese calibre Vivir en este tiempo fue algo para la historia👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I always thought that Schenker's solo on this song on the Lights Out album was one of the most perfect solos, a great combination of technical brilliance and feel.
This is pure, heavy, no-holds-barred rock and roll at it's finest. The 70's had a lot of crap music, but the rock genre was still kickin. Schenker definitely added fuel to the fire.
Yeah me, I waited for lights out Holmfirth 3 days before Paul Raymond passed away. Now Pete Way has passed. Oh my god so many greats of my youth are disappearing. Hope the younger generation get to see the way music should be played
My dad told me UFO played in there highschool gym in Illinois in the mid 70s. He said it was one of the best experiences of his life and inspired him to play music And become a really popular band in the Midwest called the Gunnar band.
+Peter Marshall I first saw them at the Marquee in, I think, 1976. We got in and were crushed up against the stage. I could almost touch them. It was a close to any sort of heaven i have ever been musically. I could not hear for a week after but it was worth every second spent getting there and back to Oxford. They were never recognized as fully as they should have been for their greatness, but for me they will always be the absolute pinnacle of top flight British hard rock. Such memories!!! You are so correct.........they were up there with the greats in my view.
+Peter Marshall One might argue that, in the end, UFO was more influential than Led Zeppelin. How many 80s hair metal bands owe their success to the UFO formula?
+darley1958 They should be in the ROR Hall of Fame..Never understood why UFO or it's individual members are not household names..Maybe the best straight ahead rock band of all time..Only Y/T, Zep, Beatles, maybe Sabbath with Dio, Maiden with Dickenson and the Who can compare
schenker will always be my favorite guitarist. and as fantastic as his playing is on this performance, it was even better on the performance of this song captured on "strangers in the night."
Bands in those days like UFO, could play a ballad, then blow your doors off. It was great music with incredible melody and harmony. I miss the days if analog recording, tube amps and cords all over the stage. We hear physically and emotionally in waves, not digitization ✌
I saw ufo at the Kansas City amphitheater in 77. They were the opening gig for ac/dc then headliner Foreigner. Needless to say Ufo absolutely obliterated everyone else on stage that evening. Schenker stood statuesque with smoke rollin off the neck of his V. The only other live gig comparable was a year earlier I heard wagner/hunter with Alice Cooper for the welcome to my nightmare tour. The 70’s kicked classic rock n roll ass period!
Schenker has always been the most melodic and precise guitar player in rock, every note means something and not just inane twiddling of scales. His solos are pieces of art that should be more widely acknowledged.
Roth too
Indeed. Schenker's solos seem to tell a story if that makes any sense.
He is pants without Mogg and Way and this since 40 years now.

Very good 🎉 live and the record too 😮❤that guy
i'll be 57 years old this month and still rock to the 1970's metal, this is fkn great

Brilliant. Even now Schenker still extracts every last nuance from the notes.
UFO is arguably the most underappreciated band of any genre of (rock) music. They called their first album 'Phenomenon'

-lights out-no heavy petting-force it Strangers in the night...
That one of the best lead riffs and songs off all time.

Also, Phil's voice! Fantastic singer.
It surprises me more real rock devotees aren't demanding more UFO on this channel. One of the best live shows ever - if you want to go to a show, catch a buzz, and hear some real electric rock and roll. Most definitely, one of the top five
British rock bands of the 70's.
Круто 🤟 сказали!
Maestro de Maestros ,me pongo de pie ,que gallito en la lira ,todo un virtuoso este Sr en la guitarra muy pocos de ese calibre Vivir en este tiempo fue algo para la historia👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
One of THE greatest rock bands of all time. Glad I got to see them ,along with Judas Priest. Really great time.
Michael turned a lead riff into a song. The guy’s brilliant ✌️👁❤️🎸
Nothing like UFO..big body of outstanding work.
Миша! Михаэль! Майкл! Люблю тебя! Ты лучший! Твоя жизнь принесла много радости другим людям! Спасибо тебе, что ты есть! Ты лучший! Целую! ❤
My rock guitar teacher has never heard the first 5 UFO Schenker albums. Surely he should be banned from teaching guitar 🎸
He is missing out!
Who's the student? 🤘
My second teacher in the 90s taught me Alone Again Or. I learned later that it was a cover. I love it so much...
I still own Lights Out on vinyl. It is an incredible album.
Definitely find another.
_Lights Out In London_ is one of the very best hard Rock songs ever.
Big catalog to choose from to say that.
Too many assholes named them Heavy Metal, which they are not. Rock on.
T. Rex, Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd is a crap???
@@alwaysopen7970 get over it. Their influence on heavy metal in indisputable. It was a much more vague term in the 70's.
Die Schenker-Jahre waren einfach die besten
Fantastic video with all the Schenker worshipers giving homage to their hero.....UFO Rule
Michael is Awsome plays from the heart
the best album ever released by this band lights out was a landmark of world rock.
Майкл- впереди всей планеты! Всей планеты гитаристов! Майкл- Бог! Другого слова про него подобрать невозможно!
I believe those were the best UFO years, Schenker at his best!!
Rock music today does not even compare! Michael Schenker is a rock god.....
I totally love the Michael Schenker era UFO! ♥️ This guys rocked!!
Anyone else sort of kind of waiting to hear "...lights out in Chicago"? 😁
And the crowd goes wild!
their BEST live version!
Yeah me, I waited for lights out Holmfirth 3 days before Paul Raymond passed away. Now Pete Way has passed. Oh my god so many greats of my youth are disappearing. Hope the younger generation get to see the way music should be played
david wilkinson 😢😢😢
😲!!!!
My dad told me UFO played in there highschool gym in Illinois in the mid 70s. He said it was one of the best experiences of his life and inspired him to play music And become a really popular band in the Midwest called the Gunnar band.
UFO with Michael Schenker on guitar and Pete Way on bass deserve to be viewed on the same level as Led Zeppelin.
+Gustavo Perez I saw them 6 days later (9 Dec 77). They opened for Cheap Trick and crushed 'em.
+Peter Marshall LMFAO!!!
+darley1958 They should be in the ROR Hall of Fame..Never understood why UFO or it's individual members are not household names..Maybe the best straight ahead rock band of all time..Only Y/T, Zep, Beatles, maybe Sabbath with Dio, Maiden with Dickenson and the Who can compare
legendary chops that will live on forever
schenker will always be my favorite guitarist. and as fantastic as his playing is on this performance, it was even better on the performance of this song captured on "strangers in the night."
Saw UFO at Leeds Grand Theatre in '78.....fell in love with Schenker....now a construction worker of 57....married,...but the wife understands...
Michael Schenker top 5 Rock Guitarist...Easy
Yes, he rarely gets the credit he deserves.
Yep he's in my 'Pantheon'.... And the reason why I bought a Flying 'V' ! (...Dang! I wish I still had it....).
No shit! Schenker, Blackmore, Gallagher and Montrose
Deebz270 I bought a Flying V because of Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash).
Uli Jon Roth
Schenker carried all the band over his shoulders with those precise solos and rhythm. A genius of the six strings.
no
Yes
Very precise. Like Gilmour
But Chapman was also so good with his speed and bending into toe tapping solos. Surprised he kind of gave it up.
Michael Schenker absolute musical Genius
