    I bought the Schiit Modi 3+ and Echo Link based on your reviews. Holy crap, I love that setup. I’ve lost a few nights of sleep listening to music all night, after the pair helped resurrect my old 15yo Onkyo system.
    The change was very subtle at first, but when big complex (apex type?) sounds would hit, the sound is much fuller and richer. Definitely, like switching from standard quality to HD to the ears. Also, musical highs/lows are more transparent, especially when they are extended out in duration. Thanks for the reviews!

      Mike Moffat, Schiit's Co-Founder, and head of digital development, said. "It's a Modi 3...with Unison USB, our own USB interface that took two person-years of development to complete. But it also has a few more tricks that improve performance even more than Modi 3-so it's our highest performing Modi, ever."

    I'm surprised no one has said it yet... but this company and Pyle should do a collaboration on a DAC/Amp. Or maybe they shouldn't... thing would be a real Pyle o' Shiit.

    Pretty spot on. Modi 3 is not going to change the world. But for a 100 USD. It is a contender. Better than anything else? System dependant is right. Audioquest and Shanling and many others are in the game here. Even for a bit more there are greater ways to go. You can wait, get Bifrost instead. Way better machine but way more expensive but not a yggy or Gungnir so chillax. The sweet spot is really around the 350-750 USD as I see it. Better build, better analog stage, balanced option if you want. Here it is about options and sound. You get a better headphone stage, a preamplifier and a DAC too. Kill it all in one fell swoop. The Modi 3 is a bit deceptive in its value because it needs other gear to be famous. For a bit more....ahem, you get a central point on your desk that just needs source and powered monitors done. Or if a small standalone traditional layout on the minimal. Source, amp, and speakers. Schiit's own Asgard 3 with AKM 4490 is a great way to go with all you need. Pre outs, headphone stage, DAC. No brainer really for $299.00 USD! Kills the Modi 3 in versatility and as a keeper since Asgard 3 can be upgraded. A phono stage too later? Sure why not. So yeah, the Modi 3 is a bargain. It is too limited for some just really starting and doesn't want lots of boxes but needs a bunch of gear versatility. A sideways view on my take on Modi 3. Modi 3 is an impulse 100 buck buy to flavor try Schiit. Well you got 15 days to see if you like it, so why don't you just get the correct product in the first place. I know Jason Stoddard personally so I get this. The real Schiit starts from Asgard on up. The other stuff is market penetration on the impulse. Thoughtful will wait and get Bifrost, Asgard, Jotenheim and Lyr and so on. Sure Mani and Magni and so on need to be here. But be sure this is upping your "A" game in your setup and it is not some impulse cheap buy to try some Schiit.

    “This piece is going to attract a lot of newcomers.” I really liked that part, as I’m new to audiophilia, and I’ve never owned a DAC, an AMP, or even a speaker before. But I’ve seen the massive upgrade I had going from $2 earbuds to the stock EarPods, and I want to get another audio fidelity increase to make my favorite songs sound like new again, since they’re all starting to sound bad just because of my equipment making it sound flat. I really believe that I’ll buy this Schitt now.

    I normally listen to my old (and new) records (Yeah I'm 55 so for me they are still records not vinyl) On a late 80's early 90's Technics SL-1900 turntable through a Little bear Tube buffered phono preamp into an NAD 45 watt per channel amp into a pair of Infinity RS 4/b speakers...it sounds awesome to me. I have though recently wanted to stream some FLAC files and high rate MP3 files so I have just now ordered the Schiit audio Modi DAC., I have an early 90's Technics CD player...sounds shitty, lol. But I can replace the CD's I have with other formats is needed...Thanks for a realistic review for those of us that don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a DAC, Love the channel!!

    I own both a Schiit Modi 2 and Gungnir DAC. The Modi 2 offered a nice sound quality considering the price level and I was satisfied with it initially. However, the durability of both the Modi 2 and the Gunghir proved to be substandard. The Modi 2 started to be unreliable within a year. Slowly the maximum bitrate I could use went down until it gave no sound at all. The Gungnir lasted longer, but after a few years showed the same problem as the Modi 2. Sometimes I can go up to 192 kHz on the coaxial input, sometimes I cannot. Occaisionally it gives no sound at all. The cause of the problem are not my computers, since these work fine with 2 other DAC’s I have bought.

      except the power supply.. They acknowledge that fact. For some of their other gears (that requires a power supply) you might want to get a better one. YMMV but many people recommend changing the PSU for a better one. Just like John mentioned: yes this PSU is half the price of the Modi but it still beat any DAC in the $150 range. Some of their gear can go up in price pretty fast too so if you get one of their product try with the supplied PSU and then experiment... Luckily, the higher range products have their own step down PSU. So no extra cost involved.

    This is a really good channel, and I’ve recently subscribed. The videos are very well put together and informative and real world , if that makes sense. I’m trying to move up a step with streaming , currently using some old, but really good components in part. I’m using an old Marantz CD 12A, DAC ( I also have the CD 12 Transport) that is probably older than 50% of viewers watching this, and taking a fibre optic cable from an Apple airport Express into that dac, which in turn is going into what is again a now old , three box , hugely heavy Exposure pre/amp/power supply set up. It sounds pretty good to me . I still play cd’s , and I’ll mainly be streaming Apple Music primarily, at least for now. I suppose the Bluenode 2i might be a way in ? Anyway, thanks for a great channel

    Help, I need to figure out the best low-cost scenario for CD playback on my home stereo using my current components.
    I have a Sony CDP-CE500 for my CD playback and since I can't find the specs of its internal DAC anywhere online I'm using the optical output into my Onkyo TX-8270 to let it do the audio conversion. The Onkyo TX-8270 receiver has an AK4438 DAC that supports up to 24-bit/192kHz. It also has something called Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC), which claims to filter the audio output to “remove pulse noise generated in D/A conversion” and “reassemble the audio signal to its original form following processing.”
    My question is would be adding a $100 -$300 DAC be worthwhile or should I stick with my Onkyo receiver doing the audio converting?

    • @Canal_em_Vazio
      @Canal_em_Vazio 4 роки тому

      Well, it seems like you Onkyo's internal DAC is pretty decent, but adding a external DAC like the Schiit would make you no harm at all. Dedicated external DACs tend to be better than most devices' internal DACs, so I'd buy one if I were you. It's all a matter of preference and budget.
      I have a nice DAC in my Yamaha R-N602 receiver (Burr Brown) and it serves me well to hear my CDs, but having a Schiit (or other external DAC) would be a huge pleasure for me.

    I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you could answer a question. Im jjust diving into the premium sound world. I thought buying a decent receiver and streaming via wifi using spotify was a premium sound, but man was I wrong. . I own a marantz receiver and what forced me to start venturing into the premium audio world is spotify's decision to stop supporting marantz. So I bought a FiiO M11 and a Audiengine B1 bluetooth receiver. I also signed up with Tidal HD. Wow what a difference. Only problem is when I check the signal the receiver is receiving, I'm seeing only 44.1 hz which isn't 24bit. Im connecting to my receiver fron the B1 via toslink optical. Now for my question. Would getting a DAC to connect between my B1 and Receiver solve my problem? If so can you recommend a inexpensive DAC with optical in and out?
    I'd appreciate it.

      Ive been thinking alot abot this. Music is a funny thing. Even being in a good mood can effect music. I know when im down music can sound awful. The other thing is it can be subjective. One man could say the treble is to high and another could say its got insightful clarity or something. But i think if you put a blind fold on someone and take them in a room where there is say a 2 grand setup and a 10 or 15 grand set up and say all i want you to do is listen to the track, dont over think it or listen out for anything just enjoy both tracks. Dont tell them the price. Then afterwards say which one sound better. I have to think some wont be able to tell you or some will just prefer the sound signature of the cheaper one. I bet that chord sound amazing on some systems even better than the shit but on some it wont. Pairing is also so important. But i think say a 10 grand set up wont sound ten times as good as a two grand setup.

I just spent £69 on a iFi Power 2 and use it to feed my WiiM Pro Plus, the difference was amazing. And you can pick up a used Mojo for a hundred quid now, I use it as a desktop.

I know it's subjective, but will the $99 Modi 3 outperform the DAC in the Oppo? Also, what about the base model vs the multi-bit version? Thanks.

      My interpretation would be hearing multiple instruments that might be playing similar frequencies as it's own track much like in a studio environment when the engineer is mixing the individual tacks/instruments together. Some DACs might just mush two instruments that are playing the same frequency at the same time as a single xxxHz sine wave as opposed to being two completely separate tracks within the file/song. That's my take on it anyway.

    Since I upgraded from my Marantz 8801 to the 8805, I’ve been finding the new sound less appealing. I like the fullness of the 8801 better, but the 8805 does everything else miles better. I’m currently using a Chord Qutest and Brooklyn plus DACs and after this review I decided to buy a Modi 3 to see how this meaty dac compares to my other two. Since John liked the Modi better on his Rotel, and considering I have Rotel RB-1581 mono blocks, it’ll be interesting to hear the difference, if any. If I like the Modi 3, I’ll then try the Multibit. The Modi 3 should arrive tomorrow, ordered the ifi psu also.

    • @motorradmike
      @motorradmike 5 років тому

      skampster, I have both. The two sound quite different from each other. How they integrate with the system makes a big difference. With my Musical Fidelity integrated and Tekton Double Impact speakers, I prefer the Modi 3 over the Modi Multibit. The Modi 3 is just a bit crisper on the top end and has a slightly better 3D stage and depth. The Multi sounds a bit rolled off and too warm. A bit too much of an analog tube sound. The Tekton and MF combination is very neutral and not hyper detailed. The Modi Multibit is a great match for my other system with an NAD integrated and .5 “baby” Thiele on 12” stands, which most certainly is on the lean side of neutral. I did substitute a nice 5vdc 1amp linear power supply For the iPhone charger PS. The difference, at to me, is great improvement in low frequency extension and dynamics. Cheers.

    Unless the output of each DAC is level matched to within 0,1dB of each other and switching between them is blinded to the listener, any comparison of audio quality is absolutely moot!
    You can cry "golden ears", "my *this box* is better than yours" and stuff like that, all you want, but reality is, we're extremely susceptible to bias when listening to audio, our audio memory is not good and there are countless factors that impact our ability to differentiate and/or evaluate aural stimuli.
    In reality, modern DACs all have very low levels of all types of distortion and high frequency linearity, making any difference in audio output absolutely minute, when the chip is properly implemented.

      Mickey Majkic Snake oil? I wouldn’t call any Schiit DAC snake oil. They ARE well engineered audio products that sell for a reasonable price. Made In USA ain’t bad to boot. With Schiit DACs especially the way I look at it is pick a price point and you can be happy with the DAC that Schiit has in that bracket. When people start talking about a Modi 2U being tizzy or harsh in the treble that’s when I call hog wash. It seems like it’s an attitude to adopt to justify buying a $2000 DAC. There’s nothing wrong with a $2000 DAC..... just don’t tell me my $150 or now $100 DAC sounds like garbage compared to your $2000 DAC. I’ll be grabbing a Modi 3. The compatibility with Android and IOS alone is worth the $100 allowing anyone to easily use a tablet as a music server.
