    Asakusa Sanja Festival Day3

One of the biggest festivals in Tokyo, the Sanja Festival is held over three days on the third weekend of May, and around 2 million people turn out around Asakusa over the weekend.
My best recommendation is to watch on Saturdays as local bearers carry the mikoshi from Asakusa Shrine, through the Sensoji temple grounds, through Kaminarimon and out. More than 100 mikoshi are assembled, and after the first mikoshi departs at noon, the festival continues for several hours. During this time, the atmosphere is tense as onlookers rush to get a closer look.
However, even in such a tense atmosphere, as you watch the bearers in front of you rock the mikoshi high and vigorously while chanting, your mood will actually be happy and uplifted. Although the mikoshi is not light, it must weigh close to a ton, but it seems to be carried effortlessly. The mikoshi continue to depart one after another from Asakusa Shrine over several hours, so if you want to avoid the crowds and see the mikoshi, you may want to delay your viewing time a bit. The area behind Sensoji Temple is the gathering place for the mikoshi bearers, and it is also recommended that you take a walk around the area and watch them wait for their turn, gradually increasing their spirits and concentration, and stepping onto the sunny stage. .
During the festival, there are many food stalls set up on the grounds of Sensoji Temple, so you may want to try some of the festival staples such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and shaved ice. And since the mikoshi togyo continues after sunset, it will be a great time to see Sensoji Temple lit up with other onlookers enjoying the festival atmosphere.
Sanja Matsuri is a fun festival where various other events are held simultaneously over the three days of the festival. On Friday afternoons, you can enjoy the traditional large procession on Asakusa Street, while in the early morning hours on Sundays, you can watch the brave bearers competing for the poles of Asakusa Shrine's three sacred mikoshi shrines.
