I feel that Kim Thayil is often overlooked in discussions about ability and impact, and even forget myself the influence he had on my playing, sound and approach to guitar...his playing here is testament.
96 I just bought this on cassette tape and this is my number three favorite song off this album and this is my favorite Soundgarden record so underrated this album gets overlooked and doesn't get enough credit!!!!!!
Agree the range of songs on 'Down on the Upside' is incredible, album has a special place for me as I was about 14 when it hit shelves so was straight into HMV to buy it on release, where as their earlier albums I was a bit younger and were pass downs to me on cassettes from mates or their older brothers. I think I'd read somewhere that this track was dropped from the production stages of mixing Superunknown and the producer Michael Beinhorn in the interview said he was absolutley gutted they'd not included it on that album for seeing its potential. At least they came back to it for Down Upside.
Every song now cuts so much deeper since your gone and I'm not sure how that's possible as every word you wrote was felt in the maro of all your fans over the past 3 decades. Every lyric resonated in all of our souls and now somehow it all makes even more sense.
Listening to chris Cornells music today absolutely haunts me. Almost all of his lyrics tell us that he was a old tortured soul who was looking forward at times to find out what the other side was like. And I believe he had pretty severe depression from all the wrongs of the world. RIP Chris you were a great friend, father, entertainer and with one of the most powerful voices of all time, you will be forever missed by so many people.
R.I.P. CHRIS WE ALL LOVE AND MISS YOU. WHEN THIS ALBUM CAME OUT I THINK IN 94. WE PLAYED IT WHEN EVER SOMEONE IN OUR FAMILY OR FRIENDS HAD PASSED AWAY. I JUST WANTED HIM BACK HE LEFT TO SOON 💔❤✌💯
This would have raised alarm bells for me. Many of his themes would've told me he was at risk. I'm someone close to him would've caught on to this. Tragic ,awful 😥
yeah it's fucking sad, the hurt in his heart is part of what made all these songs so emotionally raw and gripping, it's what really makes me come back to soundgarden
He was forecasting just how depressed he was MANY years before that fateful day. :( No one was listening. They were to busy rocking out. Basically he is even saying he knows "black hole sun" was gonna be a hit and he hated the fact he was someone who would write something like that because that wasn't him. In other words, he hates that he had to sell his soul to become a rock star. "Shadow face, blowing smoke and talking wind" "A sudden SNAKE found my shape and tells the world remember this remember everything is BLACK or BURNING SUN" then he says " I hope it's a sweet ride" because he knows it's gonna make them famous and more well known outside of Seattle and he was right. This album was their huge breakout album in the early 90's. "sleep tight for me" is all of his fans that weren't listening to the lyrics but rocking out. "I'm gone" is well, him forecasting his suicide at some point. "warm and sweet. Swinging from a windows ledge" is how he was gonna commit suicide and how he viewed it. "warm and sweet" "one last sin before I'm dead" is the suicide he was planning Or at least this is how I see this song. If someone else looks at it differently I'd like to know. It's interesting to me how different people interpret the same lyrics. This song is so beautiful yet so sad. I hate that he felt that way and me, as a 13 yr old.. I was too busy rocking out too and not listening to his heart he was pouring out. He seemed like such a great and caring man. His death was a loss for this world and his family. Not JUST to the music world or his fans. The world is a worse place now that he isn't in it.
Thnx for this analogy. I, too, was busy rocking out and not paying attention to what the lyrics are ever saying, never mind meaning. And now that I've read your post, you got me thinking and I'm digging your interpretation.
I've thought of him and what he must have been going through every day since hearing he died on my wayc home from his last show that night in Detroit.. 😥
@@chrissimpson6701 Why do you think that? Nearly every album he's written lyrics for since Badmotorfinger has had depressive subject matter and even suicidal undertones. Is it that crazy to think that this man struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts most of his life? Mental health issues are real and just pretending they don't exist won't help anybody.
This song is the definition of dark beauty. I saw Chris' second to last performance, the best I've ever seen them hands down, in Ft. Myers at Ft. Rock. I will soon have to perform this song as a cover and I still have problems loosing my composure singing it... May the sick human trafficking shitbags that slew him and smeared his reputation burn forever with their demon slavemasters in the Lake of Fire! Rest in Peace, beautiful soul and know this everyone... Chris Cornell died a martyr along with Chester, Anthony and Avici. Red sash around the neck people... That's very specific messaging in the intel community. It means to others who understand it's occult significance, this person was silenced for running their mouth about "who we are and what we do." These four were working on a documentary called "The Silent Children" before they were "Clintoned." Please do the research and realize the horrific truth about institutionalized child trafficking.
May 18,2023. 6 years, we still love and miss you beloved Chris.
Love this song. Sometimes you just resonate with it.
“Tight and deep, one last sin before I’m dead” My favorite Soundgarden song!!! ❤️🙏 CC
LoudLove beautiful... I'm gone
What does it all the sentence mean?
I feel that Kim Thayil is often overlooked in discussions about ability and impact, and even forget myself the influence he had on my playing, sound and approach to guitar...his playing here is testament.
There is no Soundgarden without Kim's guitar.
I couldn’t agree more about Kim. Oh and great last name as well 👍
My personal favorite...guitar solo is sick..😎✌🎶🎼🎶❤💋🤘
That solo is fucking brutal!

Know the difference between moaning and groaning?
Shallow face.
Hahahaha!
No depth.
Literally and figuratively.
