So I shot a 61 (-9). The settings were Middle tees and Easy pins, so you'd think it would be a chance to go super low. Well, the winds were really high. High winds usually come in 2 flavors. 20-22mph average and 28-30mph average. This one was the latter. I saw 30mph a LOT. This made driving on this course tough since the fairways are pretty tight on a lot of holes. I only hit 5 of them. So even with easier tees and pins, the wind wreaked total havoc. I "could" have maybe picked up a couple of shots, but I didn't make any big mistakes. No bogeys. So as long as I can go low next round when it is low wind, I might still be in a good spot for the week. I could feel my shots not being solid in the second half of this round, so I decided not to play round 2 yet. I think that was a really important decision. I've had a lot of situations where I played "one more" round when I had time and regretted it. And with round 2 being the scoring round, I didn't want to risk it. So I'll get warmed up tomorrow and play it fresh!
Hey, just curious - do you play a practice round before you start a weekly?
I ask because I do, to check which clubs to use, aim points and see what oddities I might face. I know in high winds they're never the same but I have a reference.

I don't usually. I wish I had time to do so though. I haven't played a practice round for any tourney in quite a while. I do think it would help, but I just don't have the time to play that much. Some days it's a struggle just to find the time to play the daily. The days I do find extra time, I usually like to do other games from time to time too. Hence the whole "casual" part of my handle. :).
As a side note, the wind in a practice round is supposed to match the actual round now (they updated that recently). At least the direction anyway. I guess mph's could vary a little, but probably not enough to severely change club selection.
I guess I do because I still don't know the courses well enough.
The direction of the wind is the same but varies by up to 10 mph. Still helps a little, mainly for non high wind tournies.
I can still shoot 5-10 worse in the real tourney which makes me wonder why I bothered 😢
I'm really not upset though, just trying to get an idea of what other people do.
Thanks for the insight. I guess you probably have a young family, job etc etc so can understand priorities.

Yea, I've had that happen in practice rounds too. Shoot way better in the practice than the real round. I just decided to just jump into them and not worry about the practice rounds. I do want to do well of course, but I don't care "enough" to be super diligent with practice. It is just a game after all. If I do well, great, if I don't, that's fine too. There is always the next round :).
