her dance style is so raw, and so personal. they aren’t calculated yet are so so precise. her stages aren’t simply a performance but they are her own personal theater to let her artistic voice gain wings, from her song to her moves. sunmi constantly tells you through each of her songs that life is bitter in someway, and that’s okay. life is bitter so you take it and show it. sunmi has been an inspiration and honestly hero for me for years, and it’s just everything to me to be able to see her shout out her whims to the world. I’ll likely comeback and comment after I’ve learned the entirety of the song (I’m about halfway;;) but so far this choreo is far superior to Gashina in my opinion. yes the guns in Gashina were recognized by everyone and their grandmother, but Heroine makes me stop and think about what exactly MAKES sunmi such a powerhouse, beyond catchy choruses and a pop hook.
taomi It was choreograph by Lia Kim check her out.
Tetsuya Kuroko I adore and love Lia!! She’s so incredible in person~
When I see Sunmi dance, I really cannot identify that style as hers because the signature flavour of Lia Kim is too strong that when she choreographs dances for Sunmi, I can see Sunmi covering a Lia Kim dance.
I like how she dances..
Does anyone know who the choreographer is for Sunmi? Were they the same for Gashina and Heroine?
Agreed, Gashina is catchy as hell but I like Heroine more.
I appreciate how mature the sound of 'Heroine' is, especially in a market that sometimes infantilizes women in their twenties and thirties. Sunmi feels like a grown woman who has experienced things, which allows for the music videos to express things sometimes in a more abstract way. Big fan of this song and mv!
"National anthem for lesbians" you're right
Shy Renee' man that is the best definition of gashina
I don’t get it... why?
Cherry Knock all over twitter and social media, lgbt kpop stans claimed gashina as the "lesbian anthem" because of the boy/girl part switch she performed on her live stage
I haven't seen that
It does feel like a part 2 of gashina. I think that the people around her really know her strengths and are playing to it
MelodyGoth I think it is because, in the beginning, she was in front of the car.
Actually if you check the description of the video in the 1thek channel it says that this is a prequel to gashina and it says more fun things about it you should read it :)
Lieke Tolenaars ayyyyy I had no idea! Thank you!:)
Oh ty, I'll have to check it out
Heroine is a prequel to Gashina, I think
im pretty sure this is first time i disagree with him on an interpretation. i dont speak korean so i had to rely on the translation 1thek added, but judging by it, and considering its a prequel to gashina, i would argue that far from meaning "the show must go on" as a couple, as in, the relationship shall go on, it means go on even after both have gone their separate ways. in the chorus she says, according to 1thek, "do whatever you want, even if you're mean and you make me sad; you need to be yourself, even if it hurts me and its a bad ending, the show must go on". so what i think of this is it has a sarcastic edge to it, kind of like gashina did, and what she's saying is "you're going to do whatever you find fit for your own benefit even at the expense of me, even if that means leaving me behind, and despite it all i have to move on and live my life even if i have to do it without you". (EDIT: i just realized that even at the end, after spending the whole song saying "the show must go on", she changes it to "you must go on". i think this further clarifies it- the dude leaves her to pursue something different, its not her holding onto him but calling him out for not prioritizing her)
i think this fits even more when you consider it a prequel to gashina, because in gashina she's... thriving. she's angry, sure, but she's focused and settled on being her best self and blooming. and i dont think either of these songs are superficial or easy to swallow really, i actually found gashina to be extremely moving and bring a message thats very necessary and a source of strenght, kind of like "hey listen, we got this".
i dont think the reason for how hard gashina hit was it being lighter or less meaningful -it was just the sound, to me, and how impactful the point dance was. if you think about it, every song that goes viral is associated to a simple dance step thats easy to replicate -especially for girl groups, since thats how gg choreos are in general. think Cheer Up (shy shy shy), or Kara's Mister (the butt dance), or T-ARA'S Boo peep (similar to shy shy shy tbh), or Abracadabra (the legendary hip dance), or some of AOA's, like Like a cat and Miniskirt. Gangnam style even, for crying out loud. and even some boy groups - SHINee's Ring Ding Dong, or more recently and in a smaller scale, Taemin's Move, with the hip dance. i think theres a reason why groups push on the point dance -it catches on. i think the lil gun dance in gashina played a major part on how viral it went, aside from being an amazing song by an amazing artist
AtomicKittenBaby Nicely explained.
I agree. The first time I saw those lyrics I was freaked out because I thought it meant "I'm staying in this terrible, toxic relationship." Then on the second reading AND together with the MV I sensed her sarcasm and that same...for lack of a better word, bewilderment/bafflement that I sensed in Gashina (I love the idea that in that song she's all "I've no clue why you left me. Meh. OK, I'm still awesome.") The SHADE in that "you need to be yourself" line just killed me, it was so awesome :D A large part of enjoying Sunmi's MV's is also paying attention to her expressions at different points of the choreography-definitely in Gashina and now with Heroine as well.
+mrshobbes i know! it also fits so much better, because it wouldnt be the same sunmi we know if she was putting her wellbeing asider for a man that aint shit. the whole song is, to me, just a big "you just GOTTA be dumb and put other things that arent me over me? damn son what a big mistake, but im fine dont worry about me"
i didn't consider it this way! this makes so much more sense. definitely have to rewatch the music video with this in mind.
I wouldn't even be suprised if she is referring to herself in the 2nd person. She is introflexsive, working on her hidden struggles and personal criticisms.
In the description of 1theK says that Heroine it’s the prequel of Gashina. So I guess that’s why it’s similar with the instrumental drop, and also I think the beginning it’s just a way to link it to Gashina.
"national anthem for lesbians" youre god damn right
There was a giant reveal behind that, but it was in the lyrics: "you must go on". To me, "the show" is traditional femininity as perceived to be subordinated to men. It's a powerful song, because it is about being imprisoned, but understanding that now? It made me so sad, but so hopeful, too? That's why the theatre theme resonated so much for me: the public persona she plays in this video becomes an increasingly artificial performance that she still has to embody, but is also clearly seeking to break out of, and partially, she seems to succeed at doing that in her apparently toxic personal relationships. The lyrics drip with sarcasm here and the title is the punchline.
"Just minutes ago...i think....*checks watch* nope an hour ago i suck at math" XD
Please react to Chungha - Rollercoaster
IT'S A GREAT SONG
yes!!
Baekhyun & Seulgi stan yes pls hdgjigskgs
he needs tooo
Yea. Sunmi's quirkiness in music and dance is amazing and so unique. Heroine is one of my faves this year so far.
Heroine is amazing, especially the first verse, it hit home for me. Also, I think SEVENTEEN's Performance Team has performance art in their choreographies. They're super unique and different, and way more creative and artistic than most boy groups nowadays as well.
he loves seventeen! lmao theyre his ultimate group
AtomicKittenBaby Haha yes, especially Jeonghan
i thought you meant it as in he should check them out! lmao my bad! i also just noticed he has svt's logo tattooed on his arm, so theres that lol
AtomicKittenBaby Ahhh, haha nope, I've been subscribed since 2016. 😅 Since he mentioned groups who have performance art in their choreographies, I instantly thought of SVT Performance Team. 😊 And also, I didn't know he had an SVT logo tattooed on his arm. 😮
I agree, that's why it's so hard for me to get into new kpop groups, nothing seems to top or even compare to Svt for me.
I literally cried when I first watched the video, it made me feel things
Same.
I felt that she want the dances of her songs to be more contemporary, a mix of many, something that are rare for idol group dances’ in general. And the song theme connect well with gashina.
Not my favorite song but it have interesting dance and video so really appreciate this
Chungha - rollercoaster reaction :D
YES PLEASE
actually sunmi is not the one making her coregraphy it's lia kim from one million dance studio
Lïa GAUTHIER she probably has a lot of say into it tho
nadine
I would imagine simply because it seems so personalised. I imagine she had input on how she expresses it.
Lïa GAUTHIER i knew it! It’s very Lia Kim
Ubiquitous_Star Nope the dance literally screams Lia Kim. If you watch her choreography videos its more of Hand Moves and Facial Expressions.
Tetsuya Kuroko
Yeah i know its very Lia Kim like i was saying that it also feels very Sunmi too. Either way the two definitely put together a great dance. Lia kim nailed the choreo and Sunmi is so good at making it her own.
JBJ = my flower please 😊
heroine is a bop sunmi is doing great things
PLEASE WATCH JBJ MY FLOWER. It is so amazing and beautiful both lyrically and visually, I really hope this gives them their first win and reputation as a group!!
I'm watching this after RTK, and this is the first time I have listened to this song since RTK because I think about THE BOYZxONEUS performance and feel like sobbing because I just adore the story they told in their version. The song is of course amazing in its own right, but there's just something so powerful about the stage on RTK
I dont know if you know Loona, but they are so great! You should check out Kim Lip's Eclipse which is so great that even the NASA knowledge it!!!
Totally agree with your assessment of Sunmi’s dance as broader art. Good way to express what we’ve all been thinking.
LOVE your analysis of Gashina vs. Heroine. I think Heroine makes you think more, it's deeper and has more grit and I love that
Thats interesting. If This is the prequel to gashina then in this song, she trying so hard to love him despite his/her faults and then in gashina she just goes "Screw it, how could you leave me, I'm going to make you regret it." I wonder what the theme to the sequel of gashina will be?
I heard that she wasn't supposed to trip, but carried on filming and included it anyway. I think that really adds to the "even if I'm portrayed badly, the show must go on" message
Sunmis choreography and MV's remember me of Sia's MV's with Maddie Ziegler in a more colorful way. It's also really wild, sort of out of control. I love it.
I couldn't help but earring fight for this love by Cheryl Cole --' I know it's a sample but it was too present for me... Yet I love this song
MaévaDELE SAMEE
Same tbh
Yeah once I read it in the comment section I couldn't help but hear it too.
I noticed it right away it's such an iconic song...
I noticed straight away and its kinda ruined this song for me, cause i hated Fight for this Love 😂x
You've probably realized by now but even in her older solo videos, she did very modern/interpretive style dance -- 24 hours was choreographed by Lia Kim of 1Million dance studio, probably one of the most famous modern dance choreographers globally today!!
I think her dance style is quite similar to contemporary if not contemporary itself. That style of dancing always has an artful feel to it which i like.
Sunmi has such charisma and character that I absolutely adore. This song makes me feel rather sad, but I'm okay with it
great review, thanks for taking time to do this!
Heroine is such a masterpiece
Watching your reaction was my fourth or fifth hearing of the song and it sounded better than at first. Like most of her solo work, the subtle hooks dig into my head with repeat listening. So like all good art, I don’t tire of consuming it again and again.
She officially went solo when she released '24 hours' (her debut song) and her first comeback was 'Full moon'. At that time JYP had no intention of bringing Sunmi back in WG. They decided that she needs to go solo. She re-joined WG later on. 'Heroine' is her third comeback since she debuted as a solo artist. 'Gashina' is her first song out of JYP, but it's not a debut song.
And she always had specefic type of dance. Even '24' and (more) 'Full moon' (uncensored version) don't have the typical K-pop dance routine.
Spot on. Here’s my first impressions from this morning after viewing the mv, the stage and the showcase:
Anticipating translation of the showcase Q & A. The mv and stage performance seem to refer back to and/or continue elements of Gashina, with the theme that yeah I had a huge hit and now the show must go on. Sly and clever way to manage fan and press expectations. The mv continued the humor of G. The stage combines and builds on popularity of the G stage original and male/female dancers switch. Another smart, beautiful and powerful solo performance from Sunmi!
Watch the “fan video” of the stage performance. The close up view shows yet another sly touch: the dancers’ chokers all labeled “STAFF”. Indeed the show must go on!
You're so good at interpreting music and video it's so interesting to watch! I feel like watching you reviewing IUs Ending Scene would be sooo good! I know it's an old song but the video and song are just so perfect! Lots of symbolism in it.
Chung ha - roller coaster
And Oh My Girl - secret garden plss
who am i agree with both!!
Nice reaction 🖒
I love this song so much already haha and your channel is great :-)
JBJ's back, PD-nim! Please check out 꽃이야! ^^
Love Heroine it's my current fave. I loved all the elements in the music video.
I mean gashina was just an anthem in general. It has everything
I loved gashina it was on repeat for weeks...but, I love heroine so much more. Something about the way this song has more of a chill vibe.
Gashina and Heroine are produced by the same genius producer TEDDY 💕💕
"now it looks like a the unit performance" SAME THOUGHT
i feel like the same choreographer (Lia Kim) might have choreographed this too...cuz the style is sooo similar. but thats just my guess
you are absolutely correct!!
Yes Lia Kim!
especially since lia has done all of sunmi's iconic choreographies
OH MY GIRL SECRET GARDEN PLEASE. You will so not regret it!
When you mentioned VIXX I was like "Yeah! VIXX = pure artwork".
I WAS SHOOK cuz I did not expect that
Such great critics , love it!
I LOVE Gashina but I didnt even kmow something could sooooo much better until I heard Heroine. that song show the true colors of whay Sumni wants to be as an artist.
The choreographer for both song is Lia Kim (1Million channel). She's amaazing! Check her out. she choreo TT too
i love sunmi though she has such a powerful aura on her
seeing this reaction makes me want to see you react to uhm junghwa's ending credit! :) also, heroine is apparently a prequel to gashina so maybe thats why the choreo and mv have the same vibes
After listening to it a few more times..I have to admit its growing on me and I'm liking it more then Gashina. Of course to each their own. I love how they added sets/props from Gashina and put them in this video as well. Have a good one!
As for a react recommendation, Ohhyuk ft Cifika - Momom
Ok so now I’m reading that it’s officially a prequel to Gashina. That explains a lot of my initial visual impressions of linkage via set design and props.
when she runs and falls she doesnt do it on purpose, but she decided to keep it in and i thought that was amazing
I don't know why, but when you translated the lyrics while she was out in the rain it immediately made me tear up and I almost sobbed... I don't know what just happened to me lmao.
I listened to Heroine last night when it dropped and I didn't like it, but I must’ve been too tired bc I listened again and I Love it! Ofc, I love Gashina too but these 2 songs are definitely for 2 different moods. Gashina, for me, is when you either want to have a good time or feel defiant. Heroine is such a strong emotional song, I think it’s amazing that it’s about loving someone even if things don’t work out. Gashina is also emotional, but it’s easier to be angry than to be vulnerable.
Of course, if someone is treating you badly, that’s not a good thing by any means. But I feel like it’s important to acknowledge that all relationships will have down times, and you still love the other person at the end of the day. Even if you break up, they still were a part of your life- the only way to move on is to accept how things played out and that it wasn’t a happy ending. Life isn’t so simple, and I’m really glad Gashina got a prequel song that added context to the situation.
This is a prequel! So all the correlations between the two are intentional. And "the show" she speaks of isn't her relationship but her life. She says you snow me, so yaknow pulled the wool over her eyes to how he was treating her. Even if you're mean and hurt me, do whatever you want, even if you leave me, life must go on. That's why it's a more liberating song, because she's finally seeing things for what they really are. There's still lingering love for him of course, it's s relationship, but she's realizing how poorly she's been treated. And then in gashina shes more confident and surefooted with herself, and of course pissed, he leaves her and she's like "you've treated me like I was beneath you, but I'm the better one here, so who do you think you are to leave me bish???"
Please, react to JBJ's "My Flower"! I'm really looking forward to your reaction!!! ^^
At first, this song wasnt great to me because I was semi-expecting some massively awesome song (I loved Gashina obv), but after watching it a 2nd time I got hooked. The music video was artistic and amazing, and the song flowed nicely and is a really good song It just didnt sink in right away for me
This is my fav song by her
I feel like it will hit big it's one of the song that you need to here 4 times to get to love it not as comparing it to gashina but as the song it self n I think that It should be more big than it will be expected to be
I thought Sunmi has a contemporary dance background.. Surprising that she doesn't. She dances so well.
When she ran and fell, she actually fell and hurt herself haha
Absolute professional
Read the description of the Heroine Video. It explains it and Gashina. They are connected
hey pd, i love how you analize her videos and style, it makes me realize what i missed in her video. that's what i love your reactions.
p.s. i know you don't take requests but (if you haven't) you should watch vixx's performance at mbc gayo or music core, it's called the wind of starlight + a remix of shangri-la (it's okay if you don't react to it lol).
Song of the year
Sunmi-Heroine is so different with Gashina.. But no matter what i love both and i love when someone/a group do a different concept for every song. I think its so cool. Btw, you should check out AOA jimin's new song : Hey
Its impressive and love the mv so much..
im surprised to see nothing abt the plaigiarism rumor stuff here! I LOVE SUNMI'S AESTHETIC AND DANCING STYLE
chungha - roller coaster NEXT PLS 👍
"Heroine" was good and the lyrics were deep and meaningful. But Gashina will always be my favorite. It'll take a while for me to like her new song.
i searched for your channel right after watching her mv lolllll
please react to JBJ - my flower (꽃이야) 😬
This is amazing 😄
Thank you for reacting to Sunmi 👏
Btw, can you also check out Momom by Ohhyuk & Cifika?
I'm literally watvhing this in Spanish class rn dhdbdj
Not a lot about Sumni is typical. Her dance is like her personality: spontaneous and random. I love watching her and I really really enjoy her voice.
My favourite kpop song.
Heroin means women lead character on a movie or something like that. Thats why she said the show must go on.
Please react to Oh my girl- Secret Garden (you're not going to regret it)
JBJ had a comeback too! I think it's freaking amazing! It's called "My Flower" 😊 I hope you check it out! Also what's the lofi song's name you played in the backgroud right after the MV? It sounds amazing!
Heroine is the prequel to Gashina.
It's similiar to Gashina because the producers are the same (TheBlackLabel : Genius producer Teddy's label💕💕). Sunmi's songs are always something incredibly artistic 🔝💕
“Oh my god those squats” 😂😂😂
when did you start saying this is your form of therapy I love it
“Oh my god those squats” lol😂
SO QUICK!!!
oh my girl secret garden!!!!!!! so mf good!!!!!!
Please react to JBJ - My Flower. It's a very good song for their first comeback! :D
This song reminds me of Cheryl Cole Fight for this Love
React too your boy JBJ - my flower you didnt like their debut but this one you will for sure. If you did like it please make a album reaction.
I wonder what you think about The East Light comeback, it's so so good!
The choreography in this song kinda reminds me of the Japanese girl group Perfume choreos
Except more sexual
Fun Fact: TEDDY and 24 Produced this song
She left JYP E. in a good way. She get to express herself so freely now.
For some reason this song reminds me of Get Out of My Way by Kylie Minogue!!!!
I LOVED HEROINE. For me, it DESTROYED Gashina!
Please react to her Full Moon! It's perfect!
I'm not sure for heroine, but for gashina mv, it is BTS mv director that directed it. I agreed with you. Sunmi mv is quite different than other kpop artists/groups. If she used same mv director btw, I think she work so well with him. BTS director known for outstanding visual and interesting storyline plus willing to do something new. Since sunmi transferred out from jyp, I think she figured out what actually her style or what make her comfortable to sing. Sunmi has this kind of weird vibe in her music and concept which is good. That what actually make her set apart than other artists. I think thats why she work welll with Lumpens(bts director) as she give off solid concept and storyline. While gashina is viral hit, I like this song more for music listening.
