    OUR STORY SO FAR:
We are Cory & Kristen Williams and in August 2014 we made the long drive from Southern California to Alaska to move into our new home in Eagle River. Here we’ve had the chance to explore Alaska, experience lots of wild events, meet lots of great people and endure the extreme temperatures that the north is known for. On December 23rd, 2014 we got engaged after our Polar Plunge under the Northern Lights then later married by our favorite lake on May 23rd, 2015. Then on June 23rd, 2016 we had our first child. A baby girl named Chell.

Don't listen to anyone saying to put her down. You can not spoil a newborn. They will not get bossy. It simply doesn't work like that. Love her, tend to her needs, you won't regret building that bond and having her know you are always there. Babies don't even get the premise of spoiled crying for attention till almost a year old.

You have such a beautiful family, I love how much energy you have. Idk if I'm qualified to give baby advice and I know you get a lot but I'm the oldest child from a family of 13 kids and I've had 4 babies in the last 5 years so I kinda know a little somethin. I've learned that new parents tend to keep their babies overly warm, I noticed you've been saying Chell is sweaty, so maybe tone down the swaddling. When her nose is starting to get cold then you know she will need a blanket, she could get a rash on her called heat rash if she gets too warm, that's how you'll know she needs to be cooled off. And babies love quiet baby talk you kinda have to be close to her face so she can see you when you talk. Babies also have a hard time sleeping and staying asleep when they have too much stimulation right before nap or bed time, too much could be like bright light, bright colors, loud noise or playing. Babies think they're hungry when they have bubbles or tired, if you feed them it could make the bubbles worse. You could try holding her with her legs up and her bum on your chest while you're supporting her back and head with your arms and scrunch her up to kinda put a little pressure on her tummy and just bounce slow and soft, you could rub or pat her back at the same time trying to coax the bubbles up into a burp. I hope this helps. You're doing an awesome job!

That's the most reasonable comment of all on this video. I agree colder temperatures are better for sleep, and a baby should not be overly covered. Those swaddlers and breastfeeding blankets and carriers seem so heavy, and they seem to make the baby uncomfortables. Swadlers are good but it seems there are too many layers. I agree on the light as well. It doesn't let adults sleep either.. Those daylight bulbs in the rooms are not doing her any good either, they should close the shades after 9 pm and keep the white and blue lights off, only the yellow/incandescent should be used.

We co-slept with our daughter all the time when she was little. Just made sure to keep pillows and heavy blankets away from her head. Her dad was a super heavy sleeper, so it never bothered him. I'm a very light sleeper so I wasn't ever worried. In fact, having her right there made me feel more secure than if she'd been in another room. Kids have YEARS to grow up, there's no hurry. Mine's 18 now and going off to college :)

good luck Kristin and Cory! I have 4 kids and they were all sooooo different when it came to putting them to bed as babies. One loved to be swaddled, one loved to have a blanket over her head like a bird (weird,I know), and one had to be rocked like I was going to toss him out a window. The nice thing is, once you figure it out, it gets easier to put them down everytime.

Chell probably loves to listen to your voices a lot, its comforting. Hearing Cory and listening to him talk is comforting to me and brings backs memories. Maybe when its too quiet she stats to cry because she's not used to that and that would be scary to a baby.

You talking to Chell from the womb had me laughing out loud so hard, it was an amazing moment I'm sure she'll laugh at as well when she grows up. And I'm enjoying these moments in the house more than I enjoy the nature ones! I know there's like an itch in the back of the neck telling you that if you don't go out the vlogs wouldn't be "that" good, but as much as nature is kewl and all, your life is amazing :) that includes womb sounds, dancing in the house, tending the garden, using your snow thingies and whatever thingies hanging pictures, going to the store shopping for stuff n' things... you get the jist :) my favorite vlog so far!

Chell's sense of reality is going to be very interesting! The noises Cory was making really seemed to calm her. Very cool! I think knowing how old she is is very interesting. Kristen, you are sad she isn't clinching her hands like she did at first. Wait until she starts using those fingers in deliberate ways. It will fascinate you! Maybe the big smiles are automatic responses, but she has given a few small smiles that seemed very real to me. Thanks for letting us into your lives!

Swaddling is a good way to lay her down so that she feels more secure and cozy. All that open space is scary to her. Saying weeks old is perfectly acceptable and non-obnoxious for the first 8 weeks or so, then just skip to months old, but only until 24 months. Aren't you glad cleared to get that up? lol. She is adorable and you guys are doing great!

New parent brain is absolutely normal.
Consider a co-sleeping crib if you can afford it. It's a huge help when you're nursing.
Back in the 90s there was no such thing and I pulled the side off an old wooden crib and shoved up against the side of our bed. It saved my sanity. Roll over, nurse the baby, change the diaper, put the baby back in his sleep-space, and go back to sleep.

I seriously went through the giggle-fits when you were bouncing on the yoga ball making "sounds from the womb"! My husband did the same thing with our children... such great memories! You both are fantastic parents and I enjoy watching you both go through this new journey in life! Cheers!

  • @riverland5264

When I had my children I had a little rocking crib right next to my bed, with sheets and woolen blankets. I was adviced to always warm up the bed with a warm waterbottle. Then we would go to bed, feed them and let them fall asleep between us, like you are doing now! And then put them in the warm crib. I wanted to be close to the babies the first months. I breastfed my daughter untill she was 9 months old. in the night I would lift her from her crib, with my sleepy eyes closed, no lights! and feed her and put her back to bed, without leaving my bed! This really worked for all of us and the babies 'learned' when it was night or day.
I Love watching your video's and thanks for sharing a little bit of your life with Chell. You are both so loving and caring. (and i love Kristen reading about 'Baby's growing' :)) Brings back sweet memories!

Hey Cory and Kristin, a little tip for setting Chell down when she's asleep in your arms (I learned this through years of baby-sitting)....
Place a folded blanket quickly over her immediately after setting her down, and place your hand over it for a little weight. Keep speaking softly and very lightly move your hand so she still feels like she's pressed against you. Once you're pretty sure she's adjusted to the new position, gently/slowly remove the folded blanket. It just softens the transition and temperature change from being held to laying there on her own. Don't know if it will work for her, but it certainly worked for the fussy little guy I took care of. :)
Chell is absolutely gorgeous, and you two are doing GREAT. You're already wonderful parents, and your journey's just beginning!

At the beginning of the vlog when you were wondering if she's really "here" yet, it reminded me of something my old boss talked about when his wife was pregnant. He read a book based on the theory that human babies leave the womb too early. A majority of animals give birth with their babies already fully capable (giraffe and elephant babies can walk almost immediately after birth, for example), or near fully capable, but human babies aren't capable of anything for 2-3 months. The idea is that human babies really should be in the womb for 11-12 months, but come out sooner because they grow too large for the mother. As newborns they sleep, eat, and poop, and that's about it. But around 3 months they're able to recognize faces and even have preferences to people. They become more aware of their arms and legs, gain hand/eye coordination, and can start reaching out for things that interest them. Obviously giraffe and elephant babies are way more advanced than human babies from the start, but the theory does make some sense!

Cory, you're so funny. The first moon landing happened in 1969 -- long before there was a space shuttle (1981). LOL! That was so sweet about Sparta. Lovely to go back to when he was just a kitten. Glad you're doing some co-sleeping. It must comfort Chell more than when she's lying in her crib by herself. You're figuring it out!

I about died laughing at your "womb" sounds! You guys are doing such a great job and she is so adorable!
Just one tip I used when my babies would wake up when putting them down. I would put a heating pad in their crib on "warm" while I was feeding them. Before I put them back down to sleep I would take it out and put them down. That way they wouldn't wake up from the feeling of cold sheets.
I also wouldn't hesitate to give her a pacifier if you decide that is what you want to do. I had twins, one liked the pacifier and one used his thumb. I still had plenty of milk (I breast fed) for all. If I hadn't used the pacifier I would have been "comfort" feeding all night long. But you do what you feel is best for you. Keep up the good work!

Regarding knowing when Chell will "be here": the app "wonder weeks". You get a cool calendar for Chell that warns you about the "fussy days" so you can plan for them. It tells you what happens in the different development phases and when they will happen and also have advice on how to help the baby get through the different stages.

The cats my parents had were the same as Sparta. One of them also really looked like Sparta. One of them, the torti, didn't like anyone, but socialized more after I was born. And the like Sparta looking one was always social, but had a soft spot for me: I could do EVERYTHING with him. Take him outside, take him to bed and those kind of things. He was such a sweetheart.

Swaddle in lightweight swaddle blanket since Chell gets sweaty. Part of her waking up is change in body warmth from you holding her and if she's sweaty she feels cold. Imagine you are asleep all cuddled up and someone has you roll over but takes your blanket off. You wake up. Some sleep better in something like a Sleep n Play instead of laying flat...feel more secure.

Your womb noises was seriously the funniest ever 😂 The grip strength is cool, it's a primate feature so that if we lived in the trees she would be able to hold on to mom, they can honestly hold their weight which was tested way back. Seeing the test scared me so don't try it xD but maybe google infant grip and see if you can find it. :) I truuly felt for her when she pulled her hair though :( Also after like 1 month you can start count months but until then it's okay to count days imo :) and weeks of course! But 2 months sounds better than 8 weeks.

But, now he can smile and play and he is more aware like he recognizes me and gets visibly excited to see me it's so cute. Anyway, my point is to enjoy every single stage and while it's sad when she grows out of things there are even more exciting things ahead. I love her little outfit today! And Sparta's probably decided that Chell is his responsibility. That's what my old orange tabby did when he came to us; I was about 18 months old and he decided that I was his human. ❤️

I found you guys recently and was instantly addicted. First of all you are both the ages of my grandkids, and very like two who were expecting around the same time as you. Then just a bit later. So, without intruding on them (in NJ), I became a fly on your wall and did not feel as if I was in the way. Well, a week ago yesterday... on July 7th, Jameson Levi Farrell was born. Oddly, I feel as if I got TWO great grandkids ... not one. I adore my two for real Great's, Karis Joy, age 17 months, and Jameson, 8 days... and your little girl. It's true about LOVE ... the more you feel the more you get. Wishing you great joy, up there in Alaska!

What you guys should do is make a diary/log thing over her first gifts, babyteeth etc and first drawing and such :D My mother had one of those (tho, she kind of stopped filling it in like a quarter way) and I absolutely love looking back into that book. Apparently i liked drawing ghosts that looked like an old lady- i always wonder if i truly saw a ghost .-.

Hang in there. The womb sounds you made had hubby and I cracking up! It reminded me of when my baby brother was making thump, thump-thump, thump-thumping sounds to my daughter as she was sitting in her car seat on the portable dishwasher as it was running. I asked him what he was doing and he told me that he read that babies like to hear heartbeat sounds when they were fussy (she had woken up before we had and my step-mom had snuck her out of our bed on the floor) and he was trying to keep her calm. He was 16 and she was 4 months old. I ruffled his hair and hugged him and told him "Thanks kiddo for helping for a little while but she's hungry!" She was totally breastfed at that point. He was grinning from ear to ear! hahaha

She will change in looks like crazy over the next few months....right now she is a perfect blend of Mommy & Daddy. Certain little expressions she gets she morphs into a mini-me of her Momma...Cory your hands looked HUGE when you were lifting her out of her crib

Really guys! Start vacuuming and making sounds when you put her to bed! She will maybe cry for a minute but louder sounds help, they are used to it from the whomb. And for my girl it helped making a 'Ssshhhh' sound pretty loud as it seems yo resemble the bloodflow in the body. Good luck you guys, you're doing awsome!! ❤

I love that you are figuring out what sleep routine works best for you guys. There's no one way! My son slept better in his own space, but we bedshare with my youngest because that's how she sleeps best (for anyone who reads this - YES there is plenty of information out there on how to bedshare safely!). Every baby is so very different! Hopefully you get another good night of sleep! :)

Have you guys think about the smell for a reason she prefers staying in your arms and bed than on her own? How about a teste? When lying her in her bed, put one of your shirts together just to see if she stays put without crying. How that's sound?
Really love to see how Chell is developing, it's amazing. And she's big like my nephew who looks like a 2yr old boy and he's only 1y and 5 months! All the best for you guys!

When she gets old enough to go on fishing trips, get her one of the toy fishing rods from Wal-Mart! I lived in Alaska when I was just a little little girl and my parents gave me one to play with while they were fishing. And a huge King salmon ate the lure on the toy rod and started to pull me in, but my dad was right behind me and helped me land our first King salmon with my baby fishing rod! It'd be such a fun experience for you guys.

another way to put your baby to sleep is by humming a calm song, nursery rhymes, quiet classical music or a lullaby. the lullaby that i use to help me or my sisters go to sleep is called rivers flow in you that should be able to help chell go to sleep and keep the volume in the medium level so she doesn't cry or wake up too much, hopefully this helps. :)

THANK YOU!! for showing the bottom of that stein! LOL, now I have officially begun my Christmas shopping!
When we burped baby, we would start low on the back and work up the back, to help the bubbles come up. Or you can lay them over your knees belly down and rock them, some babies like that.
Definitely, you sleep when she sleeps is the best way to get a bit more rest.
