How High Is Liam Eichenberg's Ceiling For The 2024 Miami Dolphins?

  • The Miami Dolphins are a team that is presumed to be adding a starting offensive guard in free agency in the weeks ahead. Much of the discourse around the position overlooks a young member of the Dolphins' offensive line - utility OL Liam Eichenberg. After playing at both tackle spots as a rookie in 2021, Eichenberg transitioned inside in 2022 and then played nearly all of his starts at center for Miami in 2023. What is the ceiling for a player the Miami Dolphins haven't done many favors for early in his career?

    I don't care who starts as long as the O-line is better than 31st best O-line out of 32. I think Liam has been better and he was a god-send last year even though he played the latter part of the season with injuries. If it were not for him, things would have been a lot worse. Kudos to Liam for sucking it up last year. If he starts that means he grew as an O-lineman. If he is still the back up, he will be a valuable back up considering how versatile he has been. He earned his money last year. Ryan you are probably right about drafting an interior lineman and expecting them to start is an unreasonable thought and was probably the logic the Phins used during the draft.

      I love wishful thinking. However, our Oline clearly got worse as far as a starting oline goes. The caveat is that our debth greatly improved. Liem had already hit his ceiling. He is a solid utility guy. The offense did improve with the addition of white and obj. By adding obj, we will be able to eat up nickel defenses on Tuas Quick release in the flats and white running A and B gaps. This will force teams out of nickle where we were punshied all last year. We will be addressing guard in training camp, free agency after june and next years draft. Center and Gaurds are a major need for this team going into 2025 season

    Kyle, if you take a look at the current Dolphins depth chart from ESPN (I know the Dolphins don't do depth charts cause that would deem it as official), I think that would represent the most viable prediction at this point of the schedule.
    Yes, I know that would represent more than the 53 man roster would accommodate but that would be the starting spot until we go through Training Camp. That doesn't include any UDFAs so we can cross that bridge when we evaluate all players on the 53 man roster.
    In order to not depend on going to ESPN, here is the depth chart. Discussions can be had on who actually stays on as backup roles.
    LT : Terron Armstead, Kendall Lamm, Ryan Hayes
    LG : Isiah Wynn, Lester Cotton
    C : Aaron Brewer, Liam Eichhenberg
    RG : Rober Jones, Chasen Hines
    RT : Austin Jackson, Patrick Paul, Jack Driscoll
    Position flexibility-wise, Lamm can play both LT and RT, like wise for Patrick Paull. Lester Cotton can play both LG and RG. Liam can play both Center and LG, unless you train someone else to play at Center like Liam did last year.
    I agree that Liam's best position is at LG. Unless Liam can beat out Cotton for LG and you train someone else to play at Center, I don't believe Liam will be on the 53 man roster. Remember, we also got a prominent UDFA that plays an awesome Guard, that can be trained at Center. I feel he is far ahead of Liam playing as Guard with natural power in the run game but needs more polish in pass protection.

    Great episode, this deserves attention. I believe LIam will be a good guard after struggling at center, I've been the most critical of his center play, but when Connor got hurt Liam got thrown in the volcano. He'll be better for it. Thanks for fleshing out the recent history of Miami OL coaching and problems, and magnifying the details..

    My main concern for this year is backup center. If the strategy is "eh, we'll see if Eich can do better with time" we are basically saying the season is over if Brewer gets injured

      I think it’s a bit odd that everyone assumes that the end of last season Liam is the beginning next season Liam - or ANYONE. He learned a new position on the fly and was not great but improved. With an entire offseason with the same offensive line coach, is it possible he can take 1 step up to capable starter? Not pro-bowl, but better than the end of last season? Austin Jackson did that, Achane came in with more muscle on his frame, etc. I think he can be better - and he should be even better as a center, a position with a LOT more line call out responsibility. Again, he doesn’t have to be great. Just good and available.

    Given the historic fragility on left side of this OL being a backup is practically starting. Still hurts that we could have taken Creed Humphrey with the pick, what a draft class that would have been.

    We don’t need a top tier OL. Tua gets the ball out in a top 5 speed, and we have some of the leagues best players at creating natural separation. Our run game is not based on power but rather speed and getting to landmarks. These guys can handle all of that.

    I don’t think Liam will beat Wynn in camp but we know Wynn will get injured at some point. Also he’s the only backup Center on the roster so far. Can Butch Barry unlock his potential? Hard to say but I’d believe he’ll follow the Deiter route. Grier doesn’t like to part ways with his draft picks unless it’s a disaster. 😊

    Most national NFL analyst based their draft grades on the first and second picks. Even the Bills that traded out of the first round had most of their chatter based on Keon Coleman.
    Turning back to the Dolphins, can you imagine just how much chatter the Dolphins would get only if they stuck with the traditional route of selecting Graham Barton / JPJ and Christian Haynes while still getting Jaylen Wright and Mo Kamara along with the other picks? That would have been definitely a S or A++ grade.
    There would be no more discussions on this as Barton / JPJ would immediately slide to start at LG and Haynes to start at RG. Liam would be a trade bait for other teams that need depth at Guard.

    • @markfowler7815
      @markfowler7815 3 місяці тому

      I agree we should have got Barton and Haynes but at least we got one ol who I think will immediately replace Terron Armstead whenever he is unable to play and he will be a massive upgrade over Kendall Lamm who will just provide depth because Austin Jackson also has injury history and he and Patrick Paul will get valuable experience while Armstead is still a Dolphin and can help mentor him and eventually take over whenever Terron Armstead retires.

  • @df3575
    @df3575 3 місяці тому +2

    Looking at the comments here and much of them are unsurprising in their reaction to the essence of this post's existence: redeeming Liam Eichenberg.
    I know why, Kyle. Resignation. We know from experience, Chris Grier is going to force Eichenberg on this team and fans of this team.
    To scavenger hunt for a single game where Eichenberg wasnt god-awful and latch onto it is simply desperation. In fact the point of sample size is to protect oneself from this kind of analysis.
    I'm sorry (truly for having to watch this kid get opportunity after opportunity almost no one who isnt a nepo baby would get) but Eichenbergs level of play should have consigned him to the END of the bench at best, and, honestly, to the street.
    It renders the thrust of the context around "evaluating his play" moot in a meritorious world. But he's one of Grier's failed picks at oline -- a predominant grade for Grier.
    Kyle talk about elements of play like punch and leverage and hand placement.....the kid doesnt have the play strength to be an NFL linemen. Period. Its WHY he suffers so much to execute. "Moving him around" was an effort to run from this. Its ALLL OVER his tape. Hes pushed around like a child when men who play dline want to do so to him. He bounces around in the violence of the line of scrimmage, knocked literally to the ground often times by guys hes not even matched up with.....its like a kid in the middle of a stampede of adults. We can talk about improving "balance" all we want, the crux of the matter is Eichenberg is overmatched for his ability to compete v opponents.
    Kyle, when did you ever see Eichenberg play with force. Was there even a single rep he allegedly won that didnt involve him simply mustering the ability to get in the way? Its wholly different from spinning his play as "playing with power not being his 'best trait'".
    Its dire. And were only privy to posts/conversations like this because the guy has been forced on us with chance after chance after chance (in the alleged meritocracy) because his boss's boss chose him. Yuck.
