I've been working on my next video, and the build part of the video is finished! I still have a lot to do with the editing, but wanted everyone to know a second video is on its way! Thanks for all of the kind comments both on and off UA-cam!
I think games are going to play an even bigger role in our society in the nearby future. We are going to need as many games as possible to avoid boredom
Thank you so much Jay! I was really getting hung up on finding general background music I wanted to use, so I went back and checked your videos. That made me realize I don't have to have background music all the time - so you helped me without even knowing it!
Hi Doug, I found your channel and video of the Quarto game on Jay Bates weekly list of "Interesting Stuff From Around The Web". For a first time video, I was thoroughly impressed with your ease in front of a camera. Also you Voice over was so descriptive and thorough, I'm going to make a go at making the game. I hope you put out more videos soon and I subscribed so I'll be notified of up coming videos. Way to go, and congrats on making Jay's list. Best I have seen in awhile. ~Dolly
CrossGrain Wood Products,LTD thank you for the kind words. And I'm thrilled you are going to make a Quarto board for yourself! I'd love to see how it turns out. Hopefully the printout with dimensions and template on my site are helpful for you too!
Que precioso video, todo, la iluminación, el audio, la manera en que presentas el proyecto, los tiempos, las tomas, transiciones, títulos, como dividiste las tomas frente a la cámara con las tomas de voz en off, todo, absolutamente todo precioso. Me suscribo
¡Eres demasiado bueno! ¡Muchas gracias por las amables palabras y por notar todos esos detalles en los que trabajé! Espero escuchar lo que piensas de los futuros videos que publico. (No hablo español, así que tuve que usar Google Translator, espero que esté bien)
Thank you so much Earl! I really appreciate the encouragement! I am nearly done filming the next build, and I am moving on to editing. Hoping to have it out within the next week. Your shop looks awesome by the way.
+Small Shop Works thank you for the kind words! I use Fusion for some modeling but my renders are done in Blender 3D. I think on this one I modeled the board in fusion and the pieces in Blender.
I really enjoy your videos, very cool. one of the things I like the most is that you give credit to the channels that inspire you, like "DiResta" or "I Like to Make Stuff". this is very important for the community. looking forward for your next video...
+Julio A Arango thanks! Sometimes I’ve absorbed knowledge and I can’t place the source, but I’ve learned so much from so many makers. Thanks for your kind words!
Excellent job, Doug! Are you using any particular types of wood? You mentioned oak and maple for scrap pieces, but I didn't catch it if you mentioned it for the actual board and game pieces.
Bette Anne Mellentine Thanks! And you are quite right --- oh well! I used Bur Oak and Black Walnut for the pieces shown most frequently in the video. The other pieces were Hard Maple and Cherry. The board was made from Red Oak.
love the video, i might even build this game my self one day, with some slight ajustments ofcourse, i got some own ideas allready writen down, i have never seen any of your videos but i wil definetly keep watching. :)
Thanks buddy! I am not sure exactly, but hours and hours and hours. I was re-learning Premier Pro, and also learning how to use Blender for the few 3D models I used in the video. Then there was recording the voice over, etc. I think it would go a lot faster next time! (At least I hope it would).
Hey, Doug... I notice you're using a Harbor Freight (Central Machinery) stationary belt sander. How do you feel about that unit? I've read both good and bad reviews, and I know you get what you pay for (especially at HF), but I'm wondering if it's worth the relatively cheap price. My 32 year old Shopsmith unit just gave up the ghost, so I need something, and the JET is -- at this moment -- out of my reach.
Hey Dale! You absolutely get what you pay for at HF, haha. I got this one on sale and with a discount I think, so didn't pay too much for it (Maybe around $60?). It wouldn't even start without help right out of the box. The belt tension was easy enough to adjust, even though I can still stall it with enough pressure (and it still needs help starting from time to time). However, all that being said, it does what I need and I use it all the time - though I am not sure the disc is 100% true/flat. I have an 80 grit disc and a 120 grit belt which works well for what I want without gouging the wood too bad. It was too aggressive with a 80 grit belt. To summarize, its currently working for me (I think I've had it about a year) - but your milage will vary :D
Malpractice Insurance thank you! I used a Nikon D3200 for this video. More recently I'm using a combination of the Nikon and the iPhone 6S for recording. Talking audio was recorded with a Blue Snowball.
Doug, random question, are you putting dust collection just to the fence/top of the router table or do you have dust collection going to the underside of the router table too?
Seth Messer just the top. The bottom is fully open and I just vacuum or sweep it up when I clean the shop floor. Dust collection is a few wet/dry vacs right now.
Holy crap! Amazing photography, editing, and craftsmanship! My videos look like Skeeter the meth-head at the street corner slapped it together compared to this. Fantastic job!
Fisher's Shop haha, thanks for the compliments --- but your video made me want head out to the shop and make a spoon -- so it was very effective! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos!!
Hi Doug, Great job! I hate to say it but this is a worldwide copyrighted product by Gigamic - which they released in 1991 and is still on the market - it would be good to at least mention them. en.gigamic.com/game/quarto-classic
Until I read your comment, I didn’t even consider someone would think the game was original to me (and hopefully they don’t). On the printable rules on my site, I credit the author - but I’m embarrassed that information didn't make it anywhere else - it certainly wasn’t intended to be malicious. I’ve updated both my website page and the video description with information about Gigamic, Blaise Müller, and a link to the official game. Thank you for your comment!

This is FANTASTIC! Well made man!!
I Like To Make Stuff thank you so much for even taking the time to watch it! I never would have made a video had it not been for your channel!
I think games are going to play an even bigger role in our society in the nearby future. We are going to need as many games as possible to avoid boredom
This was a fantastic watch! You did an awesome job! You never cease to amaze me!
Well done, man!! Loved the 3D overlays to illustrate the game pieces -- super helpful.
John Neiner thanks man!
Beautiful project and video. Very nice.

Keep it up Doug, your videos are so good.
+Wood.Work.LIFE. Thank you! Now that the stool video is out, I'm getting excited about starting the next build.
Good luck man! Keep rocking it, you are going to blow by me with your level of production quality.

Thanks for sharing the video! :-)
I hope you enjoy playing it as much as we do! Its a great game to play because the rounds are relatively short, but still challenging.
Nice project. Great video! Subscribed. (Found you through Jay Bates's mailinglist)
Willem Kossen thank you! I am super grateful to Jay for sharing the video.
