Seeing as the theory is that Stabby was a human child lured by the Nowhere King (as the song hints), it makes sense for the magic to turn him into what he was, a child, when he finally got a parent again
The alternative to Durpleton's misplaced fatherly love the dark oppressive forces of the Nowhere King, and death at the hands of his enemies. Also, he wouldn't have a room with posters, so really there's only one choice.
Well all the minotaurs were made originally to be a big family for the nowhere king, so durpleton showing him true fatherly love is enough for.him compared to the nowhere king
My head canon: The fact that Durpleton never listened to what Stabby had to say prior to transforming wasn’t because he wasn’t paying attention, but rather he actually could not understand him. This could be extended to the other characters as well and only we-the-audience are actually able to understand him when he speaks. Think about it; NONE of the characters actually respond to any of his dialogue before he transforms (the sole exception being “all hail the nowhere king”). Also if you notice, all the other Minotaurs we hear appear to communicate in grunts and other noises. This was probably how the other characters in the show heard him but then when his form changed, his tongue was transformed as well hence why he develops a different sounding voice entirely; to symbolize that he can now speak in a way that the others are actually able to comprehend. Just food for thought.
That would literally undermine the arc of his character, in him learning to be a better parent by actually listening? If he literally could not understand that entire thing would be nonsense? It would actively ruin the moment. There's also the fact that several times they DID respond to him directly like when he said his name was Phillip.

Funny story: I'm right in the midst of a campaign where my character has "adopted" an injured kobold...she's a centaur (donkey) bard. The funniest part is the party were well into this storyline before Centaurworld was on any of our radars, so it was an incredible coincidence, but I now can't unsee Durpleton and Stabby whenever we play. In short, you're absolutely right and it's hilarious.
And according to the director, this was exactly the thought process when it came to writing Stabby: taking inspiration from all the DnD campaigns she'd played where the party ended up adopting a low-level minion enemy as a pet.
Funnily enough, I literally have a DnD character that I have yet to use who is literally a Kobold. His name is literally Scoot, and he is missing his two back legs. He speaks broken English.
As everyone else has been saying: Funny thing, I ALSO have a DND character where he adopted a dragon egg from their first loot! The egg will soon hatch too and I lowkey want to name him Stabbleton "Stabby" lol

I feel personally called out for, for my DnD table where we have kept an (adult male, previously powerful wizard) ghost stuck in a rabbit as a pet for close to a year now. But a life of endless carottes, sleeping whenever and earscratches have made him enjoy his newfound life somewhat.

Also the metaphor of the nowhere kings army (the minotaurs) just being soldiers haunted by PTSD and not knowing love or security is really wholesome, especially in the end when they go to help the others. That one in the end didn't understand that they didn't need to fight anymore, or how to lower their guard :(

This was such a nice subplot plus it basically confirmed that even the minotaurs could be "redeemed" by finding their true selves in centaur world as they are more than mindless monster's (when not mind controlled by the nowhere king). As to why did an adult in his 40s accept and enjoyed being a stranger's son I think that because the war had previously taken everything from them, durpleton worked as a form of normality. Regaining his innocence and finding love in a family/herd that he most likely had stolen away by the elk before turning him into a hybrid soldier in the human world
Honestly I never really liked derpleton, characters acting like their skulls are hollow is a pet peeve of mine, but god damn do I love the fact that he broke a likely cycle of abuse by treating his kid better then his parents treated him.

Right the fact is you're never going do everything right though you should always try to do so, what's important however is to notice when you have erred and to correct what you're doing wrong instead of doubling down as some parents do.

This subplot is rough around the edges but i adore it, i honestly thought stabby would just be a one-off joke character to be killed off, i was floored by what they did with him.
I honestly love how daddleton goes from the haha random character to being a really well written character, from his saying sorry dad from his farts to actually learning it was trauma, and him adopting stabby because haha, adopting a grown adult, haha, so random, to it being he wants to be there for someone how his heard was there for him, amazing character
Kind of my own theory is that the nowhere king had started using children and fusing them with animals, in order to literally “grow” his army. This would explain why, for so long, Stabby was adamantly rooting for the Nowhere King. He grew up a minotaur (I know all Minotaurs root for the Nowhere King, but Stabby much more so). Eventually, through dumb luck, he finds himself in the hands of Durpleton. Even though he literally grew up following and killing for the Nowhere King, his innocence was restored, and that is why the magic of Centaurworld made him a wee little baby. Not because that is how Durpleton saw him as, but that is what he was before he became a mindless monster. It is the magic giving Stabby a second chance to grow up a (somewhat, he’s a lizard boy now lol) normal life with his now dad, Durpleton. And even though he says he’s an adult, and even though his voice reflects that, he often acts like a toddler. “Cup cup dada?” Is one great example (and literally my favorite, it’s such a funny one liner) And the numerous times that Durpleton has had him on a leash, he acts like a toddler. I love this show :)

I think it's wild how daddleton actually says, "you forgot why you're fighting this war" in the song at the end, it's wild because, the minotaurs aren't even willing soldiers, just scared, chaotic, kidnapped, brainwashed creatures that need love and comfort in their life again

I don't think Stabby here's suffering from stockholm syndrome or some unhealthy attachment behavior. Yes, he was rescued by the herd against his will, but it somehow worked out in the end. He realized tht these guys meant him no harm, and began to feel true security for once in his life. "Word of God is that characters don’t change their appearance based on how long they stay in Centaurworld, but how they let the world change them." If he ever had any reservations, the magic would've never made him change into one of the most vulnerable things on this planet: a baby also, he clearly keeps his memories intact , and has access to an adult mind. Age regression is often recommended by therapists as a healthy coping mechanism, but ofc it's not a permanent change
Yeah plus Horse only started to become the way she is now when she got more attached/comfortable with the centaurs she had around her. She also got specific powers with her body that, even if she hated some at first, turned out to be something she needed- like the talking tail helping her with the moletaurs and being capable of warning her of the future? So I think this really does say a lot about what Stabby wanted and needed

I think his voice was always deep but thanks to being stuck in an unnatural body mix of human and snake, it messed with everything about him including his voice, considering some minotaurs couldn't even talk and just grunted. Maybe when he got a body-transformation that was from centaur world, a world where human and animal mixes are normal, it repaired the body with centaur magic? But also added its own magic into him like how it did with Horse and Rider.
Durpleton is such a great father to Stabby. He and Stabby are one of my favorite father and child duos. Right along side Scrooge McDuck and his daughter Webby from Ducktales 2017, Din Djarin and his son Grogu from Star Wars the Mandalorian and now Hitch and his son Sparky Sparkeroni from My little pony make your mark special.

I honestly love how daddleton goes from the haha random character to being a really well written character, from his saying sorry dad from his farts to actually learning it was trauma, and him adopting stabby because haha, adopting a grown adult, haha, so random, to it being he wants to be there for someone how his heard was there for him, amazing character
Kind of my own theory is that the nowhere king had started using children and fusing them with animals, in order to literally “grow” his army. This would explain why, for so long, Stabby was adamantly rooting for the Nowhere King. He grew up a minotaur (I know all Minotaurs root for the Nowhere King, but Stabby much more so). Eventually, through dumb luck, he finds himself in the hands of Durpleton. Even though he literally grew up following and killing for the Nowhere King, his innocence was restored, and that is why the magic of Centaurworld made him a wee little baby. Not because that is how Durpleton saw him as, but that is what he was before he became a mindless monster. It is the magic giving Stabby a second chance to grow up a (somewhat, he’s a lizard boy now lol) normal life with his now dad, Durpleton. And even though he says he’s an adult, and even though his voice reflects that, he often acts like a toddler. “Cup cup dada?” Is one great example (and literally my favorite, it’s such a funny one liner) And the numerous times that Durpleton has had him on a leash, he acts like a toddler. I love this show :)

I don't think Stabby here's suffering from stockholm syndrome or some unhealthy attachment behavior. Yes, he was rescued by the herd against his will, but it somehow worked out in the end. He realized tht these guys meant him no harm, and began to feel true security for once in his life.

Yeah plus Horse only started to become the way she is now when she got more attached/comfortable with the centaurs she had around her. She also got specific powers with her body that, even if she hated some at first, turned out to be something she needed- like the talking tail helping her with the moletaurs and being capable of warning her of the future?
So I think this really does say a lot about what Stabby wanted and needed

I think his voice was always deep but thanks to being stuck in an unnatural body mix of human and snake, it messed with everything about him including his voice, considering some minotaurs couldn't even talk and just grunted.
Maybe when he got a body-transformation that was from centaur world, a world where human and animal mixes are normal, it repaired the body with centaur magic? But also added its own magic into him like how it did with Horse and Rider.
It's hilarious that they made what was essentially stockholm syndrom, heartwarming and family friendly.

Durpleton is such a great father to Stabby. He and Stabby are one of my favorite father and child duos. Right along side Scrooge McDuck and his daughter Webby from Ducktales 2017, Din Djarin and his son Grogu from Star Wars the Mandalorian and now Hitch and his son Sparky Sparkeroni from My little pony make your mark special.
