Is it bad that him asking where his mum was and his little face after he heard that she left him broke my heart? I will adopt him and become his mother.
I love how Grandpa Joe is super mean to Gerry and super anti orange and what not (even to the point of potentially helping a terrorist), and yet is the only one that is nice to James (in his own way) entrusting him with the tent, and even appologizing to him after accusing him of being a rapist. XD
That was a backhanded compliment. Not being nice. He was being amusing to himself and others present by saying that to James. Still managed to insult Jerry as well.
@@shadowthief9577 well i mean when you think about it he is at least half irish, and considering the fact that his mother got pregnant in derry and had to go to england to get an abortion i would also assume his father is irish too. so basically james is ethnically irish with an english accent. they never acknowledge this, which i find fascinating
This show is the best thing to have come out of 2018!! maybe the best I've ever seen, already watched every episode 3 times and still discovering new funny bits
In interviews, Dylan Llewellyn - the actor who plays James - has spoken about how he has trouble understanding the accents on set, which added to the confusion of his character.
@@doracheng6620 yeah didn't his mum get pregnant in Derry, then go to England for the abortion, before meeting his step-dad? So he'd be fully Irish by blood, but once people hear his accent they probably wouldn't care.
He is, but culture-wise and place of birth counts as English. (It's similar for me -- I'm half-Scottish (father is from Glasgow) and have some Irish ancestry, but by place of birth and raising would count as English.)
I guess it’s a similar story as with myself. My parents are originally from India, but I’ve spent my whole life in the US, so while I am proud of my Indian heritage, I identify more with American culture and customs since that’s how I was raised. So since James was born and raised in England he probably considers himself more English than Irish.
I want them to get together too, Erin clearly likes him and from what I remember I think she's the only one of the group to have referred to James as her friend.
Not the last time I checked. We walked up to them, as you do, and said "Hey, we'd like to be in charge of this place here" and the Irish said "Yes!! Subdue us!" and that was how Northern Ireland came to be. Our history is full of flower and kittens. We love each other so much that we don't enjoy it when the other one loses in the six nations.
I’ve never seen the show, but somehow find myself binging these ‘best of’ clips. I’m loving it, but pretty sure I’ve seen all the best parts now and no longer want to watch the show itself 😆
Do they not understand that even tho he's English, he's Catholic born and has Irish parents and full Irish blood, just because of his accent doesn't mean he's the people who invaded your country
Poison Bliss yes, but they make comments about “you lot invading” implying that his ancestors invaded Ireland, which they didn’t, because his parents are Irish, Irish don’t dislike English because of the way they talk, they dislike them because of their history of being cunts, that’s why they show disrespect to English people for having ancestors that bullied the Irish, but James is Irish in his own way
Irregardless of whether hes english, irish, or half and half; the minute he speakes hes a target. Alot of nationalist would just fuck him up straight away without even a second though of his acutal heritage
The English starved them, burned them off this land and set up poor houses and soup kitchens for those who agreed to convert. And they still haven’t left. In just the 1800’s Ireland went from 4 million to 2 million. 1 million died, 1 million left the country and some of the 2 million converted. Centuries before England set foot in North America they were practicing colonialism in Ireland. It’s not the religion part. You don’t have to be Catholic in the rest of Ireland or any religion actually. The Protestants are the descendants from English who took the land or descendants from Irish who were converts. It was a convert if you want the soup to starving people. I’m american and family came to the US at various points in history from Belfast and county Mayo. The entire island. I’m old enough to remember some of them. My Chicago neighborhood in the 80’s would bring kids over for weeks in summer to get them away from it and see a peaceful way to live. Yes I said Chicago and peace in the same sentence.
Well that isn’t true mate, this is set in the 90s and the Irish I’ve met really love the English especially the accent, I think it’s more a banta thing nowadays with beef between England and Ireland because at the end of the day we are still the UNITED Kingdom

"If anything the gay thing sort of cancels out the English thing" is one of my favourite lines ever. Bless this show
I can't see pass your massive closet.
As a gay English person that part absolutely sent me!
@Merlin Emrys it means that assuming James is gay, the fact that he's English will be overlooked, mainly if he IS gay but James isn't, so 🤷🏽♂️😂
I love how they get so much gay support into this show, especially considering its set in the 90s 🤣
Tom Pengelly I love how they’re catholics but have more issues with English people than with gays!
Gotta love when Deidre says "It's not the gay thing you're offended by, cause I'd be disappointed in you Mary"
„If anything the gay balances out the english thing“
I like how as the series goes on, James gets more confident and fed up with everything, kind of emulates Michelle honestly
I love how he was safer as the only boy in an all girls school instead of the only English fella in an all boys Irish school. 😂😂
IRL he would be so dead at least mentally... Teenage girls a horrible monsters

Grandpa Joe constantly insults Gerry, but once when he was high from eating cannabis-laced scones, he actually showed a fondness for him.
Not gonna lie I think James is quite fit
It's a shame he's gay, then.
ashton vickers in the new series he is but not now
He's gay, shut your gina off.

Joel Young I love how the majority of us just refers to him as Barristan Selmy 😂😂😂😂
This show is just bloody amazing.
Love this show! The poor wee English fella!
I would feel bad for him but he dragged chippys so he deserves it
Not if his mother left Derry to go to UK to have a termination - unless she was doing it with an English man while living in Derry!@

So funny and spot on. My husband's name is James Maguire grew up in Ireland. Makes it even funnier.
The actors of James and Clare are amazingly convincing as teenagers, knowing their real ages.
I love this show ...it has changed my life...leaving America and going to live in Derry...looking up FLATS now!!!!!!....
I died when Granda Joe got all protective over a boy sleeping in Erin's room. If that's not foreshadowing for Erin x James I don't know what is.
And season 2 the prom episode definitely a foreshadow too.
They were studying, not sleeping.

Michelle and Claire corpsing at 2:45 is hysterical.
