The Hard Rubber Orchestra was formed in 1990 by John Korsrud. They have released
five albums, toured across Canada several times and to Europe, and recorded several
CBC Radio Broadcasts. They have performed over 100 unique concerts including
operas, new music ice shows, and arts raves. They have commissioned over 50
Canadian composers such as Kenny Wheeler, John Hollenbeck, Darcy James Argue,
Brad Turner, Peggy Lee, Christine Jensen, Harry Stafylakis, Scott Good, James
O’Callaghan, Marianne Trudel, Hugh Fraser, Fred Stride, Phil Dwyer, Rene Lussier and
Linda Bouchard.
In 2023, the Hard Rubber Orchestra received the Canadian Music Centre's
Barbara Pentland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Canadian Music. "The award
was presented for their countless commissions and performances of Canadian works,
and their nurturing of so many Canadian composers and the musicians who bring their
music to life.”, and received a JUNO nomination for their album "Iguana" (their 2nd
nomination), featuring music by Haralabos Harry Stafylakis, Peggy Lee, James
O'Callaghan and John Korsrud. in 2024 Darcy James Argue's Secret Society
received a Grammy nomination for their "Dynamic Maximum Tension" featuring two
HRO commissioned compositions: Ebonite (2019), and Tensile Curves (2014).
