- In this video, I demonstrate how these four exercises can help make Master Studies easier to do for pen and ink drawing. And I put those concepts into practice by reworking an older project. Some of the Master Artists featured include Franklin Booth, Bernie Wrightson, Kentaro Miura, and my other favorites.

One tip that has helped me with tracing is to print the original image in a lower opacity setting, essentially imitating using tracing paper on a lightbox, but with only a single sheet of printed image. Then I can trace overtop of the original and focus more on the execution of the linework. My linework has greatly improved as a result. Just throwing that out there in case people don't have a lightbox or don't want to bother with multiple sheets/taping the tracing paper down, etc
Good tip!
Thank you for the inspiration. I hope one day I can improve and do illustrations for my own personal enjoyment.
Love what your created. I think your work is already worthy of selling and showing!!!
Amazing! Thank you for sharing your skillset
In the royal collection online there are good quality free PDFs of Leonardo da Vinci's anatomy studies. I started learning from them because I didn't know where else to start. Turns out he's a pretty good teacher😅
Thanks for introducing me to the artists in this video!
And da Vinci used a quill and ink for many of his sketches - extra cool 🖋
Fantastic work! very inspiring. I'm also a big fan of Booth and Wrightson. Joseph Clement Cole is a legend as well. thanks for the pointers.
oh yes, there's a good Master Study vid of Cole by @TheArtThropologist and recently I bought a book recommended to me of J.C. Leyendecker also inspiring. I'll add them both to my Pinterest Board :)
This was very interesting and informative. I used to think I'd never have the patience for so much fine detail/line work but now I can see how it can really put you in the flow state and be very relaxing and satisfying.
Glad you enjoyed it! A state of flow is exactly how I'd describe it as well.🙂
You are blowing my mind! Thank you ~excellent tips !
Cheers 🙂
Your videos blow my mind!!! I’d absolutely love to be anywhere close to your mastery! I admire your knowledge and skill so much!
That's kind of you to say. I was told that it's 70% practice, 20% talent, and 10% luck 😅🖋
Thank you for your time and involvement to create and share such great content. All these are great reminders and excellent tips for both beginners and people who wish to improve their craft. Keep on the good work! Wishing you the best.🙏🏼
Cheers 😊
Thank you for watching, making these videos keeps me accountable to work hard on my drawing progress :)
Your videos are amazingly well-produced! 👍
Glad you think so! I'm aiming to upgrade my editing software and am buying better lights soon, so it will improve moving forward
Just discovered this channel, fantastic content and great excuse to dust off the old sketchbook
Awesome to hear that the sketchbook is coming out 🖋😀
Very insightful video, thanks for sharing!
my pleasure!
Great videos, great drawings! And thank you for the generous sharing of your research. 👑
My pleasure!
Mükemmel çizimler.. tebrikler..
love the berserk books!
I treasure them, yes :)
Great video! I wasn't too familiar with Bernie Wrightson's work, thanks for sharing some of your favorite masters. Another master with the pen is Robert Crumb. He is amazing at crosshatching.
Thanks for adding another master to the list :) Glad that you enjoyed the video, have an awesome day!
Thank you. This was extremely helpful both professionally and philosophically. I am a professional artist but I am self-taught. Therefore, I have so much doubt on my methods teaching myself. It was very assuring to see someone do exactly what I do, and express the seem feelings.
You're so welcome! That's great to hear from a like-minded creative! Thanks for watching and I wish you the best.
Your channel is a blessing for me that manifested at the exactly right moment in my life
And I adore Wrightson too!
That's awesome! I'm glad that the content resonates with you. I plan on doing more Master Study videos in the future - there are so many great ones for pen & ink 🙂
@@longstrideillustration Yay!
Your a Berserk and Miura fan! Yep, I'm subbing and working my way through your vids.
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Great video. Cannot go wrong learning from Wrightson and Booth. Or Joseph Clement-Coll, Charles Dana Gibson, or Frazetta…
Love those guys too, there is a new Frazetta book out that I'm saving up for.
Ooo thanks for sharing this video, super useful! I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm master studying. Im Just draw ling what I see at the moment
I used to get overwhelmed and now find that having a plan with one or two areas of focus per learning session is a lot more encouraging. I'm happy to hear that you found this video useful!
amazing, ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hello again Chloe, I just want to say again how beautiful your work is and I can tell how absorbed you are in the work. It’s wonderful to have any activity in one’s life that takes one into another realm and makes the passage of time almost meaningless. Another thing that strikes me about this black and white rendering is how similar it looks to scraperboard . I wonder if you have ever tried it …..if so,I’m sure you are equally adept at making white lines,as opposed to black ! Lastly, could I ask what type of ink do you use? Regards from England x
Thank you for the kind words. I have indeed tried scrapeboard. A lot of the master I like to study have an engraving-style. I use a Speedball super black india ink, it's a pigment-carbon mix which is great for drawing with dip pens. You can find the tools I use on my website: longstrideillustration.com/tools/
Love your work! It’s very inspiring … can I ask how large is the drafting desk top that you have on your desk?
Thank you! The table easel is 20x31 inches. I'll be updating my website soon and aim to have a page dedicated to all the gear & supplies that I use, this table easel gets a lot of inquiries, I admit it is pretty convenient compared to a standard drafting table.
Great video! Could you introduce your desktop easel? For example, size, structure, and so on. thanks!
Sure, My table easel is 20x31 inches. If you do a web search on "Table top easel" or "flat surface table easel" you will find one, and they come in different sizes and models. I’m currently rebuilding my website and will have a “gear” section on it soon with a list of my supplies and where to purchase them, this table easel is a frequent request😀
Saya suka tengok drawing u.. sungguh menarik dan menjadi inspirasi saya melukis mengunakan dip pen juga..harap dapat menonton lagi hasil lukisan anda mengunakan dip pen pada masa akan datang di UA-cam..
That is kind of you to say and I'm happy to hear that you are inspired to draw with dip pens. 🖋🙂
Great video! Could you create videos on masters Sergio Toppi and Joseph Clement Coll? It would be amazing!
Well, stay tuned because both Masters are scheduled for videos this year. Coll is coming up very soon (next week) 😀!
Thanks so much -- I'm finding your videos very helpful and inspiring. Do you know if the speedball India ink you use works well with watercolor paints and alcohol markers after it's dry? It gets mixed approvals on amazon for these mediums. Thank you.
I've used it for ink washes and combined using alcohol markers... it works, in small doses. I'd venture to say that for mixed media the acrylic-based inks would perform best. Also, the paper makes a difference. On hot press paper, the pigment-based ink performed okay, but wasn't awesome on bristol smooth.
@@longstrideillustration thank you, tha'ts helpful.
Your work and dedication is great. Could you tell me what the name of that book is that you are flipping through with all the great ink drawings?
The book at the beginning of the vid is 'Dynamic Black and White by Leslie Cabarga', for additional recommendations of books and resources, my website has a Tools page and also the FAQ can be helpful: longstrideillustration.com/faq/
Thank you, amazing 🤩 often, I have problems with the nib, it skips or sticks, what is your favorite nib and ink? Thank you 😊
HI, thank you! The problems you're experiencing with the nib could be due to various factors (prep, pressure, ink, paper), you'll find the answers in my dip pen guide here: longstrideillustration.com/a-beginners-guide-to-dip-pens-for-drawing/
@@longstrideillustration thank you so much, it was very helpful 😀😁😃
I’m surprised to see Gustav Dore missing from this video. But f booth is my favorite. Who is P. Harris?
True, I featured only a few of my very favourite pen & ink heroes in this video. In the description I share a Pinterest Board where I have began adding more of my personal favourites, Doré is certainly amongst them. Philip Harris is an Illustrator & Print Maker based in the UK - his work had an influence on my choice of subjects for inking. The key takeaway from the video is that for studies, I found it more inspirational to first study the master that I admire most, then later move on to the "Classics" for further learnings.
I'm wondering what paper do you recommend for big A3 size illustration with ink ? I know about the manga papers like deleter, used for their smooth surface but it's quite small and has the brand name printed on it wich I dislike, do you know a larger size paper that could fit for ink illustration ? much love, your teachings are great.
I personally like Strathmore bristol smooth or a Bainbridge bristol art board for large formats. You'll find my paper recommendations on my website tools page. I also go into material combos that work best for your natural approach, in my dip pen course: ua-cam.com/video/YJpcUNe2PGg/v-deo.html
@@longstrideillustration intersting I will definitely check it out, thanks for your quick reply.
you could also like the work of yusuke murata
omg One Punch Man I love so much! All the yes to yusuke murata!
@@longstrideillustration ohh are u a manga fan or something? u are quite up to date on morden anime and manga
@@gheeroast7712 I am! I grew up on European Graphic Novels (I'm french-canadian) and later in life stumbled upon inoue takehiko's Vagabond and was hooked on Manga ever since.
@@longstrideillustration thats great
Do you think pen and ink is harder to master than painting ? cause it certainly looks like it is.
It's hard to say since I'm not a painter, however I think that spending time mastering the fundamentals, especially shading and lighting is useful for any medium. I used to teach alpine skiing to adults at Whistler Mountain (Canada) and instructors would often get asked which is harder and we'd answer: "skiing is easy to learn but hard to master, snowboarding is hard to learn but easy to master" and maybe art mediums are like that as well.
