    I think this could also be used for small blacksmithing projects as well. This is probably the easiest knife making forge to make.

    I've been watching all sorts of videos on mini forges trying to get ideas. Your basic 2-3 fire brick idea seems damn near 100% fool proof. Thanks for the ideas.

      Do it, if you angle the torch inlet hole to swirl the flame too, you get minimal chance of hotspotting

    Ordered my firebrick today... New mini-forge will feel like going from Yugo to a Ferrari. But, Teddy Roosevelt said "Use what you have until you get what you need". This mindset always makes us better at using "the good stuff"!

    If you drilled the burner hole at an angle so that the flame blows toward the back you'd likely not need two burners and have heat at the front as you wanted. Great video.

    • @hanvanderveeken904
      @hanvanderveeken904 3 роки тому +3

      I think you're right about that, i would have drilled the hole at an angle and more to the bottom of the hole parallel to the table in order to get a cyclone

    • @Philmoon69
      @Philmoon69 3 роки тому +1

      Whilst I agree that would solve one problem it possibly creates another. The hole would therby be longer at the angle and would block up the gastip air holes sadly :(

    I don't want to be negative but I use to do torch work for a living at one point and the IR heat will get your eyes. It's not the worst thing in the world but it ca get you. A pair of sunglasses would mitigate any dryness or burning that you would get if you didn't wear any.

    Easy DYI for the public. Fun little project for the hobbyist. I would add that you have built a 'mini' kiln. I am a ceramic artist and while firing a propane kiln, it will climb in temp much faster/better with the proper ratio of fuel to oxygen (because it's complete combustion inside.) If a blue to red flame is coming out of my exit port, it's too rich on fuel (because it doesn't burn completely until it gets out into the air.) It's such a small chamber and so little fuel it may not matter to you but minutes until temp does. TIME is money. My 2 in. cast iron burner NEVER goes inside the chamber and has about 1/2" larger dia. hole than the burner to point the burner into the opening (so oxygen sucks in around it and burns fuel more cleanly plus, keeps the burner tip cooler.) Just some thoughts. Maybe ask a potter friend how he tunes a smallish propane kiln. ;>)

  • @Griff33

    Thats a great idea. Most of the mini forges I’ve seen involve a coffee can and mixing some materials for the walls inside. This is a very easy way to get it done. Thanks for the tip.

    • @OUTDOORS55
      @OUTDOORS55  6 років тому +9

      This is way wiser than the coffee can method And probably cheaper too. These bricks are cheap, easy to work, and insulate very well. Even after leaving the forge on for 20 minutes I can touch the top of it *quickly*. Thanks for watching🙂

Just by your contributions, I've changed my horizons from simple handle-making (nooooo way the blade!!) to normalising, heat treating and tempering steel. I made a mini forge just this way - bought 12 firebricks initially and returned 8! It's just superb. Thank you very much indeed for the no-nonsense, pragmatic approach.

    The cheap Hebel bricks from the hardware store are actually amazing at insulating.
    I used to install fireplaces and we built them out of hebel sometimes.
    Just test it by holding the torch on one side and your hand on the other. I guarantee you’ll be impressed.
    Edit: I just checked the temperature rating of Hebel and they have the same temperature rating stated in this video.

    I'm thinking you can put a splitter on those 2 holes for a duel burner. Each burner has its on shut off. Close off the left and keep the right going.
    Little hose going down to keep the tanks farther away from the flame. Safety etc. But you can use ONE TANK to fuel 2 burners if u wanted that way. Just an idea I had right now watching. Looks so cool and simple instead of all that refractory cement etc.

    Really like your videos. They are accessible, straightforward but with some wry humor. Glad I found the channel and subscribed. On your design, if your bricks break down over time, next time, you might try angling the torch head to help spiral the flame around the chamber, possibly giving more even heat even with one burner. I'm sure that you've seen that in your review of all the designs, but thought I would do my "duty" as a commenter and tell you something you already knew! :)

      Yes I did see that and ended up angling the flame up and back. I wanted to try it straight first. It works both ways but angling does help even things up. The bigger torch actually heats it too much for heat treating. especially for thin blades. Thanks for the comment👍 Always appreciate the suggestions😀

    Thanks for the reminder! I was just about to build something complicated, but I have some of these aerated concrete bricks laying around in my basement. So, prob. solved :) I have to but the torch.

    This is a great channel. I'd clamp those bricks together and use a 2-1/4" Fosner bit. I'd also run that input hole at the top, or bottom, of the chamber, so it creates a vortex.

    I have a large selection of metal cutting hole saws. To cut the round and hole instead of using a knife and a chisel, I would of taped the two blocks together and drilled down through. It looked like about a three inch hole and I think the hole saw idea would be worth a go. And you would have both sides done as the centering drill bit would be in the crack between the two blocks. Great idea one I will consider after I do my spring cleaning in my shop. Thanks for sharing.

    I forget where, but I got an adaptor and hose to use a 20lb propane tank with a mini forge just like this. It's way more fuel efficient than most DIY burners. I haven't forge welded with it, but it's great for smaller work. I've also wondered about trying different locations/angles for the burner to create a longer, more uniform hot zone. It seems like having the flame come in at an angle creating a swirl pattern could work well. P.S. You can't go wrong wearing breathing protection when hollowing out the firebricks.

    Excellent, simple design. Looks like a cost effective way to build a forge. 👍 Impressive results.
