- How to make a Knife making Mini Forge!
I think this could also be used for small blacksmithing projects as well. This is probably the easiest knife making forge to make.
This video is part of the Beginner knife making series. Thanks for watching!

Hi, Im Alex and my channel is Outdoors55. It Is a channel based out of southern Pennsylvania, that delivers family friendly content focused around knife making, knife sharpening, outdoors, hiking, backpacking, and bushcrafting and whatever else I can dream up! I try to remain active in the youtube community and welcome everyone! Thank you for taking the time to watch! I REALLY appreciate!
I've been watching all sorts of videos on mini forges trying to get ideas. Your basic 2-3 fire brick idea seems damn near 100% fool proof. Thanks for the ideas.
Do it, if you angle the torch inlet hole to swirl the flame too, you get minimal chance of hotspotting
Fire brick looks like the most satisfying material known to man.
I've fallen in love, can't wait. I just 5 minutes ago ordered some. I'm going outside to wait for it now
Except when it gets in your lungs. Be very careful cutting the stuff.
Thats because it is...
@@richardcranium5048 hhahhahaha that actually cracked me up
I just want to say, “thanks”. You are my go-to reference for knife-making instructions. Your attention to detail, demeanor, and presentation skills are extraordinary.
Ordered my firebrick today... New mini-forge will feel like going from Yugo to a Ferrari. But, Teddy Roosevelt said "Use what you have until you get what you need". This mindset always makes us better at using "the good stuff"!
Hi can you tell me where you got your soft fire bricks...thanks
@@garylantinen2819 Ebay usually has multiple listings for them, just make sure they're the correct ones, because it'll have listings for the ones you don't want as well.
the sound of the fire bricks got my skin crawling
If you drilled the burner hole at an angle so that the flame blows toward the back you'd likely not need two burners and have heat at the front as you wanted. Great video.
I think you're right about that, i would have drilled the hole at an angle and more to the bottom of the hole parallel to the table in order to get a cyclone
Whilst I agree that would solve one problem it possibly creates another. The hole would therby be longer at the angle and would block up the gastip air holes sadly :(
although that mapp bottle has the airhole at the base .. that would work !!
08:00 My favorite part...... the angled view showing all the combustibles stored above and behind where the OP uses his open flame heat source........
“Nothing to see here boys, move it along!”
I don't want to be negative but I use to do torch work for a living at one point and the IR heat will get your eyes. It's not the worst thing in the world but it ca get you. A pair of sunglasses would mitigate any dryness or burning that you would get if you didn't wear any.
Matthew M Yea I just wanted to put it out there for anyone who didn't know and wanted to make one. I figured if your new to it you'll probably want to watch it haha.
Thank you, i did not know that.
Matthew M Yea and then it feels like you got dust in your eyes 😔
Totally agree👍
Thanks for that tip. I'm going to make one and had no clue about that. I just learned the hard way that my welder will give you severe sunburn. I welded in a tang top and my left arm peeled and has been sore for about two weeks. I guess there is a such thing as safety
I was wondering how long it actually took to heat the metal?
You should make a “how to heat treat a blade” video
Easy DYI for the public. Fun little project for the hobbyist. I would add that you have built a 'mini' kiln. I am a ceramic artist and while firing a propane kiln, it will climb in temp much faster/better with the proper ratio of fuel to oxygen (because it's complete combustion inside.) If a blue to red flame is coming out of my exit port, it's too rich on fuel (because it doesn't burn completely until it gets out into the air.) It's such a small chamber and so little fuel it may not matter to you but minutes until temp does. TIME is money. My 2 in. cast iron burner NEVER goes inside the chamber and has about 1/2" larger dia. hole than the burner to point the burner into the opening (so oxygen sucks in around it and burns fuel more cleanly plus, keeps the burner tip cooler.) Just some thoughts. Maybe ask a potter friend how he tunes a smallish propane kiln. ;>)
Thats a great idea. Most of the mini forges I’ve seen involve a coffee can and mixing some materials for the walls inside. This is a very easy way to get it done. Thanks for the tip.
This is way wiser than the coffee can method And probably cheaper too. These bricks are cheap, easy to work, and insulate very well. Even after leaving the forge on for 20 minutes I can touch the top of it *quickly*. Thanks for watching🙂
Clever mate great video i apreciate you sharing the video
Hi Sir and greetings from lockdown UK! I just want to say how very much I appreciate these videos. Just by your contributions, I've changed my horizons from simple handle-making (nooooo way the blade!!) to normalising, heat treating and tempering steel. I made a mini forge just this way - bought 12 firebricks initially and returned 8! It's just superb. Thank you very much indeed for the no-nonsense, pragmatic approach.
Another helpful video, thanks.
I just made my first "forge" Today, I took 2 coffee cans and used cement to hold the other one inside and create a heat barrier, I'm going to be testing it today wish me luck
Incredible. Thank you!
Made mine today! Thanks for the great videos!
That's awesome! I'm definitely going to make one. What a clever idea!
I've been looking for a way to build a mini forge. I've just found it. Thank you mate, Subscribed.
The double torch method I was hopping you would do it, Thanks bro, cheers.
Amazing idea love it. And love the outro music.
Great idea, thanks for sharing it!
Wow.. nice simple set up for beginners 😍 thx for the idea.. please make a video about heat treatment or tempering blade? (CMIIW)
Thanks for sending this link from your knife-from-a-file post! Some bricks, a MAP torch, and an old file, and I might have a left-handed kiridashi and some specialized scrapers.
Finally! Video I've been looking for. Thanks !
Nnnnice!!! Thank you! Great presentation. Like you said many designs out there. Your's is nice & simple!!
Alex, this video is the one I needed to see, thanks for producing the video and showing us a way to have an inexpensive start to knifemaking.
Awesome idea.
This is simply brilliant in its simplicity and efficiency. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for K.I.S.S.ing this! Perfect for my needs.
Super simple and efficient well done
Very helpful. Thank You.
Great idea! Thanks
Flipp'n awesome Alex, you got the knack for both knife making and UA-cam in general bro. You're a humble dude but your demeanor and wit are what do it for me. Keep doing it bro!
Thanks Kevin! I really enjoy your channel as well! Its always a good pick me up👍👍
I agree with Kevin , just the way you carry , express yourself definitely " sells " your demonstrations . As informative as they are and as likeable as they are is truly an asset for me . Thank you.
Thumbs up for all of it ,
Great information, now i HAVE to make one..
😃.
First time I've experienced your a video from you. Look forward to seeing more.
The cheap Hebel bricks from the hardware store are actually amazing at insulating.
I used to install fireplaces and we built them out of hebel sometimes.
Just test it by holding the torch on one side and your hand on the other. I guarantee you’ll be impressed.
Edit: I just checked the temperature rating of Hebel and they have the same temperature rating stated in this video.
I absolutely endorse this comment.
Brilliant mate. Ive tried a few things, but this design is simple and works incredibly well.
Thanks for this, I'm a complete beginner but want to try making a knife with an angle grinder like you did in another video - excited for this new project
Great video thanks I'm having one have a great day
Young man, you are a great teacher!
So helpful. Thanks bro
Another video hit out of the park...👍
Thank you for this video!! I was wondering how I was going to build my forge. Now I know!!
Appreciate your help buddy! 🤙🏼
Thanks brother for the info I found it to be very helpful, I have worked with wood for years and have decided to try and build knives hopefully my skills with building will come in handy to create something beautiful. Keep the videos coming 👍
Thankyou
Now I have a forge !!!! Help was lovely🙏🌷🙏
Excellent video, very well done and informative, and entertaing two thumbs up !!!!!!
Always look forward for you videos
awesome!
Cool! Best video so far on this. (Previously checked 5! All of them insides of tanks or cans.)
I do boiler maintenance on big boilers so the bricks are free for me 😂
I just started watching your channel but I am so wanting to make my own fixed blade now. Great content that is fun to learn about. 👍👍
OMG I could really use some brick would pay shipping
Awesome video thanks 👊👍
First time watching great video.
Exactly the video i been looking for thank you
Thanks for this video Im just getting started and you are helping me out lots
Highly underrated channel. Best info I’ve found for beginners and experts.
Thanks my friend!
Thank u for the video it was actually helpful and informational unlike every other vid on UA-cam
Awesome idea will definitely try this out. Just what I need as a beginner. Thanks, will be watching Your vids. Peace
Great forge! Real simple and to the point. Keep up the good work
The forge is working great. WAY better than I was expecting. Thanks for watching my friend 😀
Good idea!
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
Thanks for the ideas, Alex! This is a one-stop shop for the beginner like myself. I'm just getting started and using a lot of your ideas and advice, so thanks for all the informative videos.
I’ve mad a lot of knives with this set up and it still works great. I’ll be moving on from it going forward though. On to more high tech stuff. This is still a great way to heat treat at home for cheap though. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching 👍👊
Fantastic job ...Ill try same @ home
You sir just made my week with this! I’ve been looking for a good starter setup for awhile and now I have it
Its worked well for me so far. Still going strong🙂
OUTDOORS55 how fast does it burn through fuel? Definitely looking at making it!
Nice, simple video. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to watch👍
Thanking you for given an idea how to make a forge.
Nice video, thank you!!
*wow great video, thank you friend*
Well this came just in time to give me an excuse to be out in the cold this year. Thank you sir.
*adds forge to list of things to do
Same... this is a really cool design probably the simplest one I have seen
This guy's pretty dang clever, eh?
Just finished making one, first test is in progress as of right now! Thanks for the tutorial
Does it work well?
Super cool man :) thank you for this idea!
Wow great video! Thanks! I've been wanting to try this kind of stuff!
It works very well. I already did two blades in it. It works MUCH better than with just a torch.
Great videos!!
Yes! I've been looking for a cheap way to start blacksmithing, and this is the one for sure!
This may be a little small for blacksmithing. I suppose you could do very small projects with it. The burner is the weak point. You could buy a more powerful burner and it would probably be fine.
GOOD JOB
super--спасибо за ролик
Pure Awesome Alex! Blessings and aloha #LoveWins
Got my new king waterstone(1000/6000 Grit) a couple days ago. Love it. Much better than the old no-name stones i had.
King KDS or the KW-65?
Enjoyed the video, and I've been wanting to get into forging but everywhere I was looking for those kind of bricks they were around $10 so pretty glad you were able post a link where they were only $5
I thought it was a good price too. The shipping was a little much but they came in great shape and packaged very well.
Thanks alex i just started trying to make knives and i find your channel very helpful keep up the good work
Up here in alaska i can't seem to find some of the things ill need thanks for the links
Incredibly interesting idea Alex. Enjoyed the video very much. Thanks!
I'm actually impressed by this! 👌
It works very well for heat treating small knives (up to 8"). Its worth making one IMO. Thanks for watching my friend!
Sure thing brother! Keep it going, you really do have an exceptional skill in knives and all the other related components. You have my subscribe 👍
Good job
Every video of yours is short sweet to the point and full of useful info. all in high quality.. thank you man! :D
Thanks my friend!
I'm thinking you can put a splitter on those 2 holes for a duel burner. Each burner has its on shut off. Close off the left and keep the right going.
Little hose going down to keep the tanks farther away from the flame. Safety etc. But you can use ONE TANK to fuel 2 burners if u wanted that way. Just an idea I had right now watching. Looks so cool and simple instead of all that refractory cement etc.
Thanks, that's useful
Thanks man!
A must do appreciate the share 🇮🇪
I really love your videos :) keep going
Really like your videos. They are accessible, straightforward but with some wry humor. Glad I found the channel and subscribed. On your design, if your bricks break down over time, next time, you might try angling the torch head to help spiral the flame around the chamber, possibly giving more even heat even with one burner. I'm sure that you've seen that in your review of all the designs, but thought I would do my "duty" as a commenter and tell you something you already knew! :)
Lol, best comment. Well i hope to build one in the future and will take that into mind, and i didnt even have to look it up, so thanks!
Yes I did see that and ended up angling the flame up and back. I wanted to try it straight first. It works both ways but angling does help even things up. The bigger torch actually heats it too much for heat treating. especially for thin blades. Thanks for the comment👍 Always appreciate the suggestions😀
Interesant.
Oh I think this would work super well for me
Thanks for the reminder! I was just about to build something complicated, but I have some of these aerated concrete bricks laying around in my basement. So, prob. solved :) I have to but the torch.
Very good Brother
This is a great channel. I'd clamp those bricks together and use a 2-1/4" Fosner bit. I'd also run that input hole at the top, or bottom, of the chamber, so it creates a vortex.
I have a large selection of metal cutting hole saws. To cut the round and hole instead of using a knife and a chisel, I would of taped the two blocks together and drilled down through. It looked like about a three inch hole and I think the hole saw idea would be worth a go. And you would have both sides done as the centering drill bit would be in the crack between the two blocks. Great idea one I will consider after I do my spring cleaning in my shop. Thanks for sharing.
I forget where, but I got an adaptor and hose to use a 20lb propane tank with a mini forge just like this. It's way more fuel efficient than most DIY burners. I haven't forge welded with it, but it's great for smaller work. I've also wondered about trying different locations/angles for the burner to create a longer, more uniform hot zone. It seems like having the flame come in at an angle creating a swirl pattern could work well. P.S. You can't go wrong wearing breathing protection when hollowing out the firebricks.
Excellent, simple design. Looks like a cost effective way to build a forge. 👍 Impressive results.
