In the past, Jackie only allowed Shadow to stay on the nest overnight when she herself was losing interest.
Fiona thought the voice she heard upstairs sounded off so she decided to take a peek. When she came back for a second, closer look, she got a familiar wingslap from the guy in charge. 🙃

It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.

Jackie calls to him several times during night as if to say "come on over here my darling"....he calls back but doesn't leave. He finds it so hard to give up...bless his perseverance even though it's so sad for us. 😢💙🦅
Jackie is saying "It is time, Shadow, come to the roost tree with me." He is having such a hard time letting go, bless his heart.

Yes bless him, he always has a harder time moving on than Jackie does-at least from what we see. I am just grateful to see these gorgeous eagles as long as I can before they leave the nest. Have a good one all

I feel sorry for Shadow, looking at the eggs and then looking all around, wondering "where's Jackie?" Then getting on the eggs. Poor guy, he always takes this harder than she does.

My heart breaks every time now that I watch Shadow keep vigil. 😢 He worked sooo hard to prepare for the babies. I hope they’re able to keep this nest.
Eagle of the years... Shadow, even during the midst of sorrow. You are dedicated, and we love you.
Jackie has realized it's futile. Shadow, however, has such a hard time giving up. He really is devoted to his "family."

This year I feel like they both know the eggs aren't viable and they've known it for a while now. I think Shadow is showing Jackie that he's committed no matter what and we're really just seeing how they prove their dedication to each other and deepen their bond as they handle disappointment.

Ah, bless him! Was watching this video 📹 of Mrs B & some younger Eagle & thinking it was Shadow having an affair with another Eagle .Was Jackie from about 5 =6 years ago & Shadow before he had his white mature head! I'm so stupid 😂 Seriously Was fantastic to see Shadow & Jackie's romance start but I was confused lol 😂 Poor guy finding it tough! Bless the Dynamic Duo 💚🦅🦅

Are there any scientific reasons why Shadow stays longer? It certainly is hard to watch. If I think of it scientifically not emotionally it would make it easier. I guess I want answers and maybe there aren’t any. I thought perhaps because he has more testosterone and is more territorial. Ugh I’m trying to make myself feel better and anyone else reading this! Not that we’re aware of, but would be a great question in ‘live’ chat :) It happens each year, our Shadow stays longer and Jackie (the Queen) tries to help him move on. Fiona may be quick, but Shadow is extremely protective. Whack!!! ~ I also think that both Jackie and Shadow are spending less time on the nest.

Would this partial solar eclipse, 4/8, affect their behaviors?
I do know areas with the total eclipse affect the animals. They think it’s nighttime. It also affects plants! I do not know about partial. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. My guess is yes but alas it’s just a guess!! Be well my friend! 🌒❤️❤️🦅🦅

Does the camera really shine a light on the nest?
Infrared, I think it is, read that they can't see the light.
They cannot see it because there is no light, it’s just what we see when using ‘night vision’ on a camera.
