  • Rare Air Gun Restoration from 1930’s Accles & Shelvoke Ltd, model The Warrior .177 pistol. I will restore this antique weapon and bring it back to its glory and beyond.
    ABOUT THE .177 AIRGUN
    I got this beautiful Air pistol “donated to restore” from one of my subscribers in Canada (Thank you Glenn). This is a British made beauty from Accles and Shelvoke Ltd in Birmingham. The model’s name of this weapon is “WARRIOR” and it was produced between 1931 to 1939. So its around 100 years old. PATENT No's. BRIT 351268 USA 538057
    ABOUT THE RESTORATION
    The Air gun was in a really bad condition - The surface was totally covered in rust, the handle was cracked open and the grip was missing. The trigger was badly fixed in an earlier attempt to fix it and the trigger guard was missing.
    I started the restoration process by disassembling the pistol. That was a little bit challenging because of all the rust. I spend quite some time trying to pull out the gun barrel, but I succeeded at last. I sandblasted all the major parts with fine glass breads and with a low air pressure to be as gentle as possible to the gun parts.
    I repaired and welded the gun handle with my TIG welder and make it look as good as new. I also created some new gun handles in beautiful Asia walnut wood.
    There was a lot of pitting on the metal of the gun, so I improved it by carefully grinding with some 1000 grit sandpaper and after words I polished all the visible metal.
    I had to rebuild the gun trigger and create a new trigger guard who should fit naturally into the old gun. I assembled all the parts and did a test shooting in my garage. I was excited about this restoration because I knew it would be challenging.
    Please let me know what you think about this restoration project in the comment field. Thank you!

      It's a wierd one. He's clearly giving it a rust/verdigris paint job for clicks and a good thumbnail and I'm guessing snipping the grip as that damage doesn't seem very likely to happen by accident. The techniques are real and impressive but the presentation is ginned up for clicks. UA-cam incentivises this and the video is not "fake" but there's artifice here all the same. There's no reason why there should be verdigris on it. It's not as impressive to take and old rusty item and restore it unless it looks like it was recovered from a sea wreck.

    • @stormycatmink
      @stormycatmink Рік тому +3

      I wondered that as well. Pretty clearly copper oxides on a non-copper bearing part. Also, why are there plier witness marks on the broken grip and clear saw and cut marks at the break, rather than torn metal? Every one of the videos from this guy seems to show signs of artificial weathering and then re-making it into modern art. That's not restoring something. It's destroying one thing and making another out of it. Sure, that's art and all, but to call it restoration and sell it as such is a lie.

    Hey my man, as a leatherworker who uses a lot of punches: don't use a metal hammer to hit you punch! Metal on metal will decrease the lifetime of the tool and it looks pretty expensive. There are some nylon mallets you can buy, but I made myself a wood hammer and glued leather to one of the end, which I change as it gets beaten up. Just a tip to help save you from a few headaches in the future! Cheers

      This restoration and i guess the entire "restoration" world on youtube in general, is less restoration and more "remaking" It's like restoring a classic car. You start with a rusty pile of trash and buy every single part brand new, at the end all you have left of the original is maybe a body panel or maybe a steering wheel. To some that isn't restoring - it's buying and creating a new car with an old car part attached, similarly that's what i think of this video. It is great for what it is and very pretty to see the transformation.... but it's basically creating a new pistol and kind of eliminating much of what made the old one cool....

    I've watched tonnes of your videos and this is one of my favourites. It just felt so well balanced. I can't really describe it better than that, just the build itself was such a great size and fidliness that it enabled you to go through the whole repair, taking your time whilst it not being a super long video.
