In the immediate vicinity of Prijepolje, by the Mileševka River, there is one of the most famous Serbian medieval monasteries and the most important monastery in the River Lim valley - Mileševa.
Mileševa was built in the Raska style, and is recognizable not only in Serbia but also in the world, but not by the fact that it used to be the seat of a diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church or by the fact that the relics of St. Sava, that were burned on Vracar in 1595, were laid in the entrance part of the Monastery, but it is widely known for its fresco painting.
A masterpiece of medieval art, the White Angel fresco is one of the most beautiful European paintings, painted in the vaults of the Mileševa monastery in the 13th century.
The famous fresco with its beauty and perfect composition has impressed admirers of art and iconography for decades, and not without reason.
The White Angel brings complete harmony, exudes endless faith and hope and conveys that most important message - the message of love and peace. It is designed to look the visitor directly in the eye regardless of the angle one looks at it.
A part of the composition Myrrhbearers on Christ's Grave, the fresco represents the Archangel Gabriel with spread wings dressed in white chiton sitting on a large stone pointing to the empty grave of Christ, that is, the place of Christ's resurrection. The fresco is located on the south wall of the church while its author is unknown.
The White Angel is the messenger of the solemn truth of Christ's resurrection and is therefore synonymous with hope, salvation and miracles in Serbian culture.
Until the 20th century, the fresco was hidden from the public eye. There was another fresco was painted over this one in the 16th century, but the White Angel reappeared four centuries later during restoration.
A true Serbian treasure, this fresco is admired by the whole world. The White Angel has been selected as one of the most important works of European art, and it is also a symbol of peace.
The fresco is also the embodiment of the most important Christian trinity - love, faith and hope. Its image was recorded in modern history in 1963, when the first satellite transmission of video signals from Europe to America included its image, representing a special greeting of Europeans to those at the other end of the world.
Also, the image of the White Angel was included in the first satellite signal sent from Europe to the universe, along with images of man conquering the moon, a picture of the Great Wall of China… The hypothetical aliens were supposed to interpret the White Angel as a message of love and understanding.
Many traveler have had an opportunity to see this famous fresco.
