I know people have mixed feelings on the sequel but I think Steins;Gate 0 does a good job delving into this a bit further and gives you a good idea of what Okabe would be like without Kyouma.

Hououin Kyouma is the character that saved my life from dispear. I recognized myself in Okabin, and realized that allowing my anxiety and PTSD to rule my life will kill me and my dreams. After finishing 0 and seeing the revival of Kyouma, I became enpowered to accept my own "mad scientist", to accept myself and start to belive that I can reach my dreams and live a happy life. El. I definitely think there's a lot of validity to "having a Kyouma," in a sense, and letting that mad scientist do the things that another might not be able to. Sometimes that what my videos are. As long as it's in balance with yourself and helping you, let that mad scientist do their thing!

What I love is that Stines;Gate doesn't demonize Okabi for having such a goofy, kinda offputting persona and frames Hououin Kyouma as a way for him to deal with his anxiety that slowly morphs into his genuine expression of determination. Kyouma goes from being Okabi's mask to being his way of telling the universe "screw you, I won't accept this fate."

    Man I felt that too
The first time I watched this anime I approched it as a comedic slice of life, until episode 12 broke and every other episode made me jump into the pit of despair with Okabe. I'd give anything to be able to experience this show for the first time again. I cried more because of Steins Gate than I did with Clannad. It took me so completely by surprise.

John Titor was a ''real'' person. We don't have to speculate on Kyouma's age at the time. John Titor was active mainly from 2000-2001 but John Titor first showed up in 1998, However the first person claiming to be Titor from 1998-1999 is probably a different person to the person claiming to be John Titor from 2000-2001.
Okabe was born on December the 14th, 1991 so John Titor was active when he was about 7-9.

or, it could be the "Same" person, but one is not aware of the other's time traveling, like how Okabe doesn't know that Okabe killed Kurisu, but ran upstairs ran upstairs to see the Kurisu that Okabe killed, creating the S;G worldline

Just wanted to say thank you for dissecting so concisely so many of the ideas and themes of this series. I've shared a lot of the same thoughts and emotions about what Steins;Gate has meant to me since I first watched it, without feeling like I'd fully expressed just how deep and reflective it was regarding the human condition as well as my own struggle for identity and meaning. The last stretch hit like a sledgehammer and I resonate so much with you and how it felt to connect with Okabe on that level and experience what he felt all throughout his run.
You earned a subscriber from me and the unscripted tangent was perfect. Everyone who's watched this series and felt how these characters felt knows what it was like to finish it and just... feel. Whatever your goals and intent are with this channel, they're succeeding and I'm glad you were able to share it all with us.

The anime doesn't do the best job of showing Okabe's scientific knowledge, he's really smart in the VN. Most theories go through him and Kurisu, while Daru's being moronic lol. He's best described as seeing the bigger picture imo. While Daru is knowledgeable with computer hardware and Kurisu with neuroscience + Physics, Okabe is a balance between both and his creativity overcomes many of the hurdles they face.
Hopefully you watch sg0, I think you'd enjoy it.

Thanks! I'm always happy to bring some more attention to great anime. It's interesting that those qualities don't get presented as much in the anime, although I definitely get more of a leader or big picture sense over anything, which I could have given him credit for. But I appreciate the insight, and I do have some plans to watch 0 soon!

    • @L_Lawliet1907

I think it’s mostly due to Kyouma. He’s really smart and can be dedicated to something if he puts his mind into it (researching time travel, made a model of the actual universe, created the divergence meter, made the time machine with Daru). His talk as kyouma often makes him look like an idiot compared to Kurisu or Daru in knowledge. But like you said yeah the VN does showcase him as a more knowledgeable individual, since he was able to keep up with Kurisu while Daru needed erotic analogies to keep up lol

Between Okabe Rintaro and Hououin Kyoma, where is the space left for Okarin?
I say this as a throwaway line, but I can't help but to think there should be more to it. For at least a small moment the Visual Novel, or maybe more the main character, seems to make a great deal out of the true self and true name. and so many people have so many names and titles (many assigned by Kyoma to be fair). And yeah, many people get mad when adressed wrongly. Be it "Christina" or "Super Hacka". In the end of it, the importance of the true self comes most important when undoing Faeris' D-Mail. Rumiho got seemingly everything she wanted for the small price of Akiba staying an electronics focused district and the steep price of Mayuris death. But ultimately, her memories from Faeris come creeping in and, despite how heavy it weighs on her, she agrees to undoing the D-Mail. This is probably the closest and most obvious view we get at the entire concept - while also laying the groundwork of very strong emotional memories being able to transcend worldlines which becomes important in other Steins;Gate media.
Comin back to my opening line, names and titles given by others are more closely tied to how other people see people. Obviously, most easily detectable by Kyomas ramblings. "christina" or "kuristina" are connected to Kurise having studied abroad in america, and allso to Kyomas delusions of conspiracies. "the Zombie" refers the obvious event of episode 1. "Super Hacka" is okabe being bad at english, but also acknowledging Itarus computer Skills. The meaning of hostage and student don't need any explanation at all. "shining Finger" refers to Moekas typing speed.
But aside from that, Mayuri is very fond of combining first and last name of people into something cute. Okarin, Mayushii, Daru. They seem to be names of endearment. But Mayuri likely sees more into Okabe and Kyoma, being so close to him for so long and also keeping a surprising amount of Memories through the time leaps - in the form of dreams. But I still have trouble finding the distinguishing markers between Okabe Rintaro, Okarin and Hououin Kyoma as three different concepts.
Changing topics, I'd like to think a little bit differently than saying when okabe grows Kyoma recedes and vicew versa, though it's definitely a useful view and can probably be well charted over the course of the show, but I personally like to think that Kyoma does grow alongside Okabe, despite their somewhat melding together murkying the water. I guess that's a bit of a different axis than who is being expressed at a given moment.
It'S also incredibly well depicted how much Okabe struggles with connecting by how he puts a persona in between but also repeatedly violates borders (with one especially egregious example that's just yikes).

Hi Prof! This is the first video I have watched on your channel and I think it's a drastic understatement to say that I love it and think that this is the best video I have found on the philosophy of Okabe till now. I love these types of videos and philosophy in general when it comes to media such as anime but man I never thought I would find a character who was an exact mirror. I myself have been a nerd and obsessed with science ever since I have had my memories (i'm 16 so it's not saying much) and just actually hearing the connection between science and emotions put into words by your brilliantly crafted explanation with the mind-boggling depths the anime goes into regarding despair and companionship (which I so want but can't have because I too don't know how) was just a comforting experience to say the least. I have experienced the exact same things Okabe does in the show where he is ridiculously motivated to solve other people's problems and help them in order to not lose them, which I have done many-a-time in the past, but feels incredibly and equally demotivated to do anything for himself like getting a job, going to college or anything for that matter. This video and channel will stay in my heart as the best video on youtube of all time in my personal opinion so thank you. Thank you prof for helping me connect with the show and Okabe's character in general so deeply.
    PS
I have watched this vid 2 times and cried both times, I think i'll repeat it till it doesn't anymore.

Thanks for making me understand aspects of one of my favorites animes ever. Now I love it even more.
I feel like I already knew all this things, but I couldn't put the pieces together. I always found myself in Okabe, but I never understood why. Now I do, and I don't know what to do or say.
When I internalized all of this information, I realized I have a lot of experiences where I've acted like me and the guy who acts are different, just like Okabe and Kyouma. Every time I have telled someone my worries it's been in situations where I feel like they won't remember, they wouldn't care, or I think I'm just making up things. I remember venting some of my preocupations at late night with people in Discord, knowing no one would take it seriously, or would remember.
    Man, that's just the beginning.
I've only feel like this in a few cases. Mushoku Tensei, Re:Zero and Mob Psycho, for example. And now I feel like one of the reason I've refused to watch some shows is because I fear the idea of understanding more of what I am.
I'm sorry if I repeated some words or ideas, or if my writing wasn't the best. English is not my native language and I'm just trying to express myself without walking away from my keyboard and forget what I've been.

Don't worry, I understood everything fine! It means a lot to see how the video helped put things together for you, because it was really the same for me. Writing it was a look not just at Okabe, but myself too. So, thank you for making my quest here all the more meaningful : )

This analysis video was epic in how much depth you explained Okabe's character.
When watching the anime, I didn't see how truly lonely Okabe is and how one of his persona's roles is to keep his friends close and to let him process the situation with new people. Hououin Kyouma is there because he is afraid of showing his true self and accepting reality.
I might rewatch the series this year, I am curious how it will feel with new eyes, understanding it better. Not that I question how great it will be on second watch, but I might respect it even more, understanding the small details that you miss on first watch.

First of all thanks for UA-cam for recommending this channel your content fells really good from what I have seen
On the video itself: Okabe is actually if not my favorite one of my favorites character in media, and this video gave me the chance of view the character on a little different perspective, that's a great thing about the anime it gives more place to interpretation while the VN puts you directly on his shoes. Your take on his Persona as something he needed in general is something I never thought about like I toke it as a representation of escapism directly, at first not the good way but by the end he learns that having that bit of escapism, of "inoccence" against the darkness of the world is also necessary. Ak. Bro you can't go and watch anime all day and leave it at that but you should also rest from irl problems from time to time while also accepting your mistakes, that at least is my take on the message the character gives me, especially with how in 0 even without kyoma, Okabe is just escaping taking any responsability on his actions only when he let's kyoma slip in he is able to help himself at last.
But in this video there are also interesting things to think about how he only let's him be himself when the moment is going to disapear in time, and I just thought "this is only because it is a serious moment" but thinking on it that way makes him fell me even worse for him, he fells like if he let's the facade go truly away he would lose everything, and that just makes the scenes where all the characters still stick up with him especially daru in 0 and never give up on him as a person which makes the pay off even better at both endings.
So yeah, thanks for the new perspective and for the good content

    • @ProfessorViral

I'm happy UA-cam led you to check out the video! I hadn't seen 0 when I wrote this, but now having seen it I definitely agree that he's just avoiding responsibility in a "more adult" way there by discarding Kyoma. I've actually wanted to go back recently and mention how important Daru is in relation to Okabe/Kyoma, so I'm glad to see there's others thinking about it. But, his persona is probably a mix of both, having an escape from the real world, while at the same time providing the utility he needs. In a way, they're very much related, and the origin of Kyoma is definitely a moment he would want to escape from. So, I appreciate your perspective on it as well! : D

Okarin is actually surrounded by people who are in some way or the other, exceptional at something. Daru is an expert at programming and working with machinery. Kurisu is a literal scientific genius. Even Mayuri is constantly praised for how good she is at making costumes. Suzuha is a fully trained soldier from the future. Faris has been running the development of a city for years. In so many ways, the people around Okabe are specialists, and have skill and knowledge. By contrast, Okabe himself is a little bit of a jack of all trades. Certainly intelligent, but not a genius. What he does possess though, is sheer, unbreakable will and determination. His ability to retain his sanity through the time loops, as well as his refusal to give up on any of the people he cares for, is what makes him special.
Despite all the banter, this part of him is seen and acknowledged by those around him, which is why he's so respected by them.

I love this video. If you haven't, I give the visual novels my highest recommendation. They have much more depth thanks to the inner monologues of Okabe and the tips menu giving insight into this world. Although this is less the case with zero as 0 has the visual novel give details across many separate timelines whereas the anime strings all of it together and more. Either way, they're all interesting ways to experience the stories, and thanks for the video.

Steins Gate 0 ends, leading to the same ending as the first season ending. It's how he came up with the way to save Kurisu. They just didn't show the happy ending because it was already shown in the first Steins Gate.

I know this is going to make me sound like a snob, but the hardest part for me in watching this video was the fact that the clips were from the dub, and that the pronounciations for all the character names were terrible (again, the dub's fault). After getting used to the japanese pronounciatons, hearing stuff like /mʌjəɹi/ instead of /majuɾi/, or /oʊkʌbɛi/ instead of /okabɛ/ just really triggers me. Sorry for being such a snob :(

    • @ProfessorViral

I just use dubs because they're much easier for me. I do better at listening and watching, rather than reading and watching, and it also makes for a cleaner video. The words on screen aren't conflicting with what I'm saying. But, that's why in almost every case I'll be using dubs
