    I have concerns about being up in the panhandle and the recent cold snaps. Even my lettuces got wilted when I moved the containers into the shed. I'm about to get the raised beds soon and hope that I can plant some ready grown small plants into that and still have enough time before the real heat sets in up here. Thanks for sharing all of this info!

    Something caused most of my cauli to stunt this year. One whole bed tried to head far too early for the plants. Those that I planted elsewhere did fine, so I’m sure it’s the bed. Now I’m trying to decide if I can squeeze out one more round before it gets too hot

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  4 місяці тому

      Hmm could be a lack of nutrients in that one bed. Try putting down blood meal. If you are in Northern Florida or above 9a zone, you probably could but for those of us in central or south Florida it would be a gamble.

      I don’t think they are impacted by it. I would definitely avoid directly spraying the lizard as that would probably be the only way they could be harmed. I have Jurassic Park in my backyard and I have never seen dead lizards after I’ve sprayed.

    I’m in Texas zone 9a and my brassicas planted in the fall did not grow very well sadly. Either the leaf cutter ants got them or the heat did. Sad. Or they’re just stunted for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have a few broccoli plants that seem to be just sitting there. They made it through the big deep freeze here (got down to 14f) at least I’ll give them that. I planted cauliflower last year march 1st, direct seed, in my green stalk and just harvested them last month! Obviously they grew very slowly and some I lost to bolting as very tiny heads unfortunately even in partial shade. But it was my first successful heads of cauliflower. I only got a few larger heads so I’m hoping your advice helps me. I am planting more cauliflower now in my greenhouse and hopefully they get an early enough start to produce before the summer heat hits here. I grew snowball as well and it did the best for me (better than the self blanching from mi gardener). So I plan to just plant that variety this year and more broccoli and definitely cabbages. Timing is everything! Well so is temperature, light, and feeding but timing has the most to do with success I find. Excellent advice and wish me luck getting any brassicas here early spring before the heat sets in. ☺️I usually get an onslaught of cabbage moths in April so I’ll have to be vigilant!

    Great info. THANK YOU. I'm in houston area and my cauliflower has headed yet, but i didnt get them transplanted till beginning of Dec since 1st batch of seeds didnt sprout. But my BROCOLLI was doing great. Then they produced only tiny heads and i waited to see if they'd get bigger. But no, they started to separate. So i harvested those small heads Then cold weather came and i covered garden with white garden cloth for a week. I uncovered them yesterday and the rest of brocolli plants had gone to flower!! Does extreme cold normally do that?

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  4 місяці тому +1

      Big swings in temperatures can do that so if it’s super cold and then it swings to warm, yes it can. It freaks the plant out thinking that spring has started and they need to reproduce themselves.

      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  4 місяці тому

      It should get cool in a few days so that should hold them off but keep a close eye on it. If the head starts to separate, harvest it regardless of the size. I’ve had cauliflowers grow all the way into April in past years. They can handle some heat.

    Thank you Petrina for your tips on growing brassicas. I'm growing broccoli that I started from seeds in October for the first time. They are now starting to take off in my raised beds but no heads yet. The bottom leaves are turnings yellow as new leave emerge. I read this is normal for broccoli do you find this to be true? Your brassicas look amazing. I do have mulch around my plants. Do you grow aloe plants? I have a huge aloe section in the front of my house that is mostly shade. I use the aloe as a liquid fertilizer on all of my plants a few times per month and my plants just love it.

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a

      Yes. It’s perfectly normal. mine do that too but I just clip them off before filming, lol. Also, too cold of weather can do that too but it shouldn’t hurt the production. They are pretty sturdy plants.

    Great video, thank you! How much do you think these last few warm days in Pinellas 10B, will hurt my broccoli and cauliflower? I have Waltham, purple of Sicily, and durgesh? The Waltham has a head going now, but none of the cauliflower has started a head 😞 This 80 degree heat has me worried now.
    And also, do you have any recommendations on where to get sweet potato slips? I’m still waiting on my white potatoes from grand Tetons, getting a little worried that they aren’t here yet to plant.

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  4 місяці тому +1

      Sometimes the swings from cold to hot will push them to flower, but just keep cutting the florettes. If you start to see them getting to that point, and as long as you can keep up with it, you can hold it from fully flowering. Last year I got some new slips from Southern exposure, but I think Dixon Dale Farm might have some as well.
