A few months ago I watched this movie again after decades and... boy, it has been a while since a movie actually made me smile. I love this movie so much.
In a funny way, the 90’s was bookended with Ancient Egyptian elements in films. Early 90’s - Stargate Mid 90’s - The Fifth Element Late 90’s - The Mummy
I had a different reaction to the opening thinking it was a tongue-in-cheek reference to these poor bastards (potentially) currently fighting to breathe at the bottom of the ocean alongside the titanic because he said "every once in a while it's a good idea to come up for some air"... I still laughed, but I thought he was just being macabre before I realized the turnaround for editing alone wouldn't give him the window to make that reference.
This film was a MASSIVE part of my childhood and continues to influence me today. It absolutely still holds up and modern movies could learn a thing or two from entertainment such as this. Great review, as usual, Decker. And yeah, that intro - sheer fkin' brilliance!
Awesome review vid! Another fun fact: the hero, Korban, and the villain, Zorg, actually never meet each other for a final duel. They are aware of each other, and almost had an encounter with each other, but moments after Korban leaves the apartment to escape from the bomb, Zorg happens to enter the same apartment to defuse his bomb. I could be mistaken but I'm curious if this movie is only one that the main hero and villain have never been seen together. Unfortunately, IMDB doesn't confirm my theory.
He is one of the best villains in Hollyweird history. I love the part when he opened the box and what he was looking for wasn't there and he broke down crying.
It's crazy how artfully the movie indulged in the silly and the bizarre, yet does it so humanly, so substantively, that is feels real beneath all that crazy. Details like Zorg's emotional reactions, little bits of grungy inconvenience in the set design, how casual the characters are about some of the weirdness around them...the writing, the actors, the producers, just bring so much meat to this movie, that you're sold from square one. The suspension of disbelief is a masterclass course that Hollywood should be studying today.
I never realized that until now. Zorg only has two scenes with two of the main characters for one scene each. Yet never meets the main hero. This movie really is unique in its own way. I really wish Hollywood could make a movie like this again where the characters don't really act to the weirdness of the world unlike now and days where everyone must wink and nod how werid everything is in the story. I would love to go back to something like this
I just recently rewatched this movie after 15+ years. I thought it was amazing when I was younger, but didn't remember a lot of the small details. My recent rewatch cemented it as one of my top ten sci-fi films of all time.
"Takes care of the human bad guy... well, mostly human anyway." 😂 Reminds me of Blade. Blade: You're human. Human: Almost. I'm a lawyer. Best joke in the entire movie!
Love this movie! It blew me away when i saw this is the theater! David Bowie, Michael Jackson, and Prince were considered for the role of Ruby Rhod, but they all turned it down as they were worried about not getting a bigger paycheck than their co stars. The movie was influenced by STAR WARS, Indiana Jones, James Bond, DIE HARD, Total Recall, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Lawrence Of Arabia, and Judge Dredd.
This is a totally unappreciated movie. It is well done, well acted, and has a great feel to it. Of course this review is awesome as it’s done by the best movie reviewer on UA-cam.
It's funny that it's only now that I'm reminded of the first story from the "Heavy Metal" cartoon movie. A taxi driver in "Future New York City" deals with muggers and other filth ... and then some red-haired girl who's connected to something from Outer Space just falls into his life by winding up in his cab, he can't take her to the authorities, so he takes her home, etc.
that movie was 2 hours long? I was so into that movie when it came out it felt like a 90 minute movie! A movie that makes you forget the running time is very rare. Such an awesome movie and still is!
And all of a sudden, hope comes back to my summer ! Thank you, kind Sir, for always improving and never disappointing ! Your channel is as good as this movie !
fun fact: Leelu, usually spelled Lilu, is the Akkadian word for "Incubus". These demons were not purely evil though, often invoked for male fertility or the protection of children. The demon Pazuzu (of Exorcist fame) was said to be their king. The feminine form of the word, Liltu, "succubus", is a cognate to the Hebrew "Lilith."
I always thought there was some kind of implication when they stopped “the evil“ in the same shot on the other side of the Earth was the moon and I thought the implication was that maybe the moon was actually a past evil that had been stopped a little bit further away. Soooo, joy of joys, now there’s two moons.
Now, you might think its unrealistic for the goons to have brought an empty case to the human bad guy without checking, but I say nay. I have lost track of the number of times I've dealt with someone at work and said something alone the lines of, "So, you never thought to make sure there was actually something IN THE BOX?!"
Love Decker's videos...but was anybody else disappointed as FUCK at about 1:12 when he didn't finish it with ".....HEART!....By your powers combined...I AM CAPTAIN PLANET!"
I love the tune that plays whenever the characters are having a comedic moment, like when Ruby and the priest are talking about the bomb in the hotel. This movie stands out a good bit to me and kind of hits all the marks I have that make me like a movie or not. It's the kind of thing I'll show my kids one day.
I love this movie, just the right blend of humor, action, and scifi. Another fun fact, the actress who played the diva actually sang the song in front of the audience during the unbroken performance. The director did not tell the cast about the how the scene was to go and did not even give them direction, just that someone will sing and dance on stage. He then filmed the reaction from behind the actress. The actress felt that should could not lipsync the song well enough so she practiced and then sung the song with a variation of the "impossible notes". The cast's mesmerizing looks are genuine. There is a full run of the unaltered performance in the BluRay along with the actress practicing the moves and song. The unaltered song and performance is mesmerizing. Milla is rumored to also be in the audience as another character. There are videos of the scene unedited on the web.
This movie one of my favourite sci-fi movies, it's just a joy from star to finish. I'd love to see more 90s classics reviews like this cause this review was a blast.
Gods I love this movie. For me the perfect balance of stupid fun and sincere commitment. And hell yeah on the Summer Special! Miss Jovovitch has an impressive range of good and awful movies!
"This case.... This case is empty..." "What do you mean empty?" "I mean empty, as in the opposite of full. THIS CASE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FULL!!! Anyone care to explain?" Leeloo explaining in Mandosheewon "We're saved..." "I'm screwed!" "You wanted a case, we brought you a case! "A CASE WITH FOUR STONES IN IT!! NOT ONE OR TWO OR THREE, BUT FOUR!! FOUR STONES!! WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH AN EMPTY CASE!!!"
Definitely one of the best parts of the movie. Or any movie, in my opinion. No. The entire scene is awesome. Always love the ending of it, too. "...would have immediately asked about the little red button at the bottom of the gun." A few moments later... *explosion*
Great review as always. One of my personal favorite films. That being said, now that's it's THE SUMMER OF MILLA JOVOVICH, I am very much looking forward to the movies you have in-store. My guesses are gonna be Resident Evil (in a perfect world all of them, but idk if you got enough time), Monster Hunter, Ultraviolet, The Perfect Getaway, Three Musketeers, and maybe Hellboy 2019
Great movie and an outstanding reviewer! Bring more classics Decker - Die Hard, Fifth Element, Pulp Ficiton (realizing now Im naming Bruce Willis movies), Four rooms, Ace Ventura - stuff that people love to re-watch and they would love to rewatch with your commentary!
Thanks for all the hard work Decker, I love all your movie reviews and The fifth element was a great choice, Gary Goldman, Bruce Willis, Mila Jovavich , plus Chris Tucker and Luke Perry. P.s. excellent summer intro, and good luck with your pup.
I've never seen your channel before. I got so excited thinking Weird Al had started reviewing movies!! Anyway I learnt quickly my mistake BUT you do a great review. subbed!

Thank you, Decker, for this fantastic review of The Fifth Element. I enjoyed your candidness and also thought your choice of movie backgrounds interspersed with your video was a great choice. However I must ask, Do you still own the internet’s best couch?
Fantastic review of Fifth Element. I love that film so much. Milla Jovavich and Bruce Willis were fantastic. I even didn't mind Chris Tucker's over the top performance. Looking forward to the Summer of Milla Jovavich. :)
GREAT review, Decker! Okay - so get ready to start with your "Okay, Boomer" stuff - but when this came out, we went to see it and 1) didn't exactly know what to make of it, it was SO different from the usual... and 2) we LOVED it. I remember a buddy coming back to the barracks and saying "I don't know what that was, but I know I gotta see it again" It STILL holds up better than most newer sci-fi romps. Stylish, fun, FUNNY, odd - no, bizarre... It's tremendous. I have to say that the casting is brilliant & the performances perfect... but... it's REALLY Willis who makes it click. It would've been a GOOD movie without Willis, but WITH him, it's BRILLIANT. Thanks again, this made me happy.
Film Fact: The fake language created by Luke Besson and Milla Jovovich was a fully fledged dialect and it allowed them to have a secret affair during filming The Fifth Element
Speaking of really good sci-fi films they don’t make anymore, I still strongly recommend finally reviewing sometime this year the 1981 sci-fi/western film *Outland* that I’ve been requesting for quite a long time. Sean Connery on the Jupiter moon Io with both the special effects crew & composer from Alien (which honestly feels more like it’s connected to Alien than Aliens ever does), and in a plot that’s essentially a well made remake of High Noon. A true Cult Classic that’s high in quality, but also extremely under rated.
just re watched this the other night with a friend, Such a classic movie :D also love that you want to review more than horror, as a horror fan myself sometimes its nice to have a break and enjoy a classic action movie :D
I was worried about watching this. The Fifth Element is one of , if not my favorite movie ever. It is still a go to for me. Hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for this review. So well deserved 5 out of 5.
FUN FACT! The woman who played the diva has such a small roll because she not an actress. She is one of only 3 people in the history of that song that can ACTUALLY sing that song. That is not dubbed in post. That is actually her.
Also was Luc Besson's wife, he started dating her when she was 15, and married her. Later he left her for a 16 year old girl, who he later married, Milla Jojovich.
Always a fun watch. I think this is the movie that made me realize how amazing of an actor Gary Oldman is. His range is nuts, rarely are 2 of his characters similar. It's really impressive when you really look at his portfolio. IMO anyways.

Not sure if you caught it, Decker, but when Leeloo punches through the glass, you can see a movie editing error. You can see the crack line where Mila was supposed to punch the sugar glass. Fun little thing for you there.
One of the best action/scifi movie ever made. I'm glad you enjoyed it =) Also can't wait for you to review all the Resident Evil movies. Good Luck and stay the internet personality with the best hairs =)
A few months ago I watched this movie again after decades and... boy, it has been a while since a movie actually made me smile. I love this movie so much.
I once watched this movie with my family as a teenager at my suggestion. Then the oral sex scene happened..
I love big dumb fun movies. CG has taken away alot from modern movies but there are still big dumb fun movies. Like Godzilla KotM
awesome Weapon 12:03
Great singer 21:14
Hell yeah it's amazing 21:30
In a funny way, the 90’s was bookended with Ancient Egyptian elements in films.

Yep
Huh.
"They sure don't make 'em like they used to".
He can say that again about a dozen more times. One of my favorite movies of all time.
I actually busted up laughing at that intro. You win the internet for that one.
Normies say "you win the internet"
@@stephenlyon1358 virgins say normies
I cant believe i missed it first time!
My dad showed me this movie when i was a kid, and i fell in love with it immediately
First watched this film at my mums friends house when i was 7, liked it so much i watched it back to back in a single sitting.
This is one of the greatest movies. Also made me fall in love with the fifth element herself. She is amazing in this. Or just in general❤
Wrath of Khan
I think watch mojo made a 10 times the hero and villain never meet. But I’m not sure lol
"negative, I am a meat popsicle."
also nice phantasy star reference with Dark Falz there Decker.
He is one of the best villains in Hollyweird history. I love the part when he opened the box and what he was looking for wasn't there and he broke down crying.
The "hero" and the "villain" never meet in this movie... it's amazing XD
@@Gakusangihuh, never noticed that before
It's crazy how artfully the movie indulged in the silly and the bizarre, yet does it so humanly, so substantively, that is feels real beneath all that crazy. Details like Zorg's emotional reactions, little bits of grungy inconvenience in the set design, how casual the characters are about some of the weirdness around them...the writing, the actors, the producers, just bring so much meat to this movie, that you're sold from square one. The live action American movie that plays out and has characters like an anime.

My favorite film of all time. Its just ....Perfect.
This movie is always a pleasure to watch and that means your review is an ABSOLUTE pleasure to watch!
Leeloo Dallas Multipass!!
Not sure if you caught it, Decker, but when Leeloo punches through the glass, you can see a movie editing error. You can see the crack line where Mila was supposed to punch the sugar glass. Fun little thing for you there.
Multipass!
Way back in 1997 when the movie was newly released here in the Philippines, I noticed a few people incorrectly referring to it as "Element Five"
Genius intro!! You shall henceforth be known as Mr Shado 😁
Dark Falz?! That caught me off guard I was in the middle of some phantasy star online 2 when you dropped that reference.
This one is for the books! This is a great review Decker! Also loved how your name is the BIG BAD EVIL in the movie 😅
