  • Trail Shoes vs. Boots - Which is Better for Kilimanjaro and How to Choose Them
When people think of a mountain expedition, they think they need some big, clunky boots to tackle the harsh weather. However, technology has come a long way. Nowadays, boots have become much more user friendly and streamlined thanks to advances in manufacturers’ designs and materials. In the same way, trail shoes have gotten better too, becoming sturdier and more waterproof.
While boots used to have distinct advantages over shoes in terms of protection and support, and shoes used to have advantages over boots in terms of being more lightweight and comfortable, those gaps are closing.
In this video, I’ll discuss how to choose between boots and shoes - and what to look for in each of these types of footwear.
Boots or shoes are both fine for Kilimanjaro. The main reasons to choose boots are for warmth and ankle support. The main reasons to choose shoes are for its lightweight and overall comfort. Or bring both boots and shoes to play it safe.
The fit is the most important thing to get right when selecting footwear. And many people in this world are wearing shoes that are too small. You can get away with this in everyday life, but on a multiday hike it will cause problems. So be sure your boots or shoes are sized correctly and fit well. That means they are snug, but not tight, and have plenty of space for your toes.
Both boots and shoes should be waterproof. And the tread should be appropriate for hiking in various types of terrain.
Be smart in what you wear to Kilimanjaro, because your footwear should never be a reason why you couldn’t make it up the mountain.

    Great video.
I just bought Mammut mercury IV Mid LTH.
They are low hiking boots and not goretex. They are extremely comfortable and very light weight.
I want to use them later this year or next year for Kilimanjaro.

Excellent video. What I thought is what you recommended at the end. I am starting out with trail runners, then switching to a light mid-hight boot when it gets colder. I have three wieghts of socks all of marino wool that I will bring.

Never had boots suddenly tear apart on rocks. And it is really hard to damage boots to a state you cant really use. But shoes as soon as they have a little bit of damage they are ready to fail almost instantly.

Going to bring both mountain runners and my summer mountaineering boot for higher on the mountain. I like La Sportiva. You gotta size up for them.
