Singing in a choir is very integral to life in South Africa. We start early in elementary school, through high school & in church choirs till we die. You’ll always find SA choirs in big international choir competitions.

Your assessment is accurate. It is a unity of spirit, and it is deeply spiritual when we sing, even western hymns get rearranged into something the original composer would almost not recognize as his creation, while at the same time feeling deeply moved by it.
