Although coming from a poor one parent family back in the 50s I was lucky enough to gain a place in a local Grammar School. Although encouraged to join the academic stream I chose the technical route in year three. Our engineering and technology teacher was R.E.Jones (Scruff!). Sometimes in a double classroom period he would seem to go off piste! We loved it as we weren’t doing classroom stuff. This was the time of the ‘Cold War’ and the threat of nuclear war. Scruff had a home in the country with a little bit of land and one lesson he raised the question, should he build a small nuclear shelter for his family. Well, a lively discussion evolved with many viewpoints. It is only in recent years that I realised what the crafty sod was doing. He was teaching us to reason, debate, Question, research and come to a conclusion. He had no intention of building a nuclear shelter, this was his tool for debate. Now that is what a brilliant teacher should be.

I know 'uniforms' are expensive, I'm 71yrs old and, when I went to Senior School (that's what it was called back then), I had to wear a school uniform and I had no problem at all. Now in recent years, there are children who have very expensive clothes and footwear, and those that can only get clothes that fits their parents pockets. To let children go to school WITHOUT A FORMAL UNIFORM, leaves those children who can't afford 'posh clothes' wide open to bullying, and that destroys a child's confidence through and through... The only thing I truly do object too, is the Schools that only have 2 suppliers of their uniform and that leaves the gates wide open to abuse, they can put whatever price they want onto a school shirt, trousers, skirts, blazers.... that's not acceptable, they should be reaching out to everyone, rich and poor alike... 😡🤔😡🤔😡🤔😡GB
Not as old as you but everyone wore a uniform at my school. One family did try the we cannot afford the uniform but the headmaster pointed out his trainers were over £100 which was a lot of money back then.
70yo here, I went to grammar school and the uniform was made by a single supplier, and sold through a specialist schools outfitters. We actually got a grant to buy the whole uniform as we were so poor. The whole outfit including sports gear was £50 - our rent was £52 a year, and my mothers income was £300pa.
Was it not for this very reason that school uniforms were introduced, to make everybody equal, mps can claim for their kids uniforms on expenses, even the weekly shop goes on expenses, it’s very hard indeed to actually spend your income as an mp, because if you get a receipt you can claim it back, and don’t get me started on their winter fuel bills

Hi, I really enjoy your channel and find your content extremely informative and useful. As a former educator, having worked as a lecturer and secondary school teacher while also serving as a union rep and caseworker for the NEU, I can confidently say that the education system is broken. In my experience, academies have significantly contributed to the decline of schools, exacerbating inequality while prioritizing a corporate approach over genuine education. I have witnessed firsthand the transformation of schools from independent institutions to academies, where they are treated purely as businesses. Like many other experienced and dedicated educators, I left mainstream education due to declining job quality and recruitment issues. This has created an environment of incompetence and unskilled staff, particularly in leadership positions, while unions have shifted into lobbying organizations, losing sight of their core mission to protect workers’ rights. I believe the consequences of this education crisis will become increasingly evident with the next generation. Unfortunately, this government, like previous one remains out of touch with the realities of education and fails to address the real problems…
I would imagine for anyone to get into a leadership position in education these days they would have to be an eager follower of the 'woke' cult and spout all the usual rubbish about diversity, equality and inclusion. I can't imagine those sort of people are going to be any good at leading anything.
Sadly, I have to agree with you. Yes, the education system is broken. I've seen and experienced it from a different angle, that of a mother (and also dedicated auntie) and as a long-term volunteer with a local playgroup and a "reading volunteer" at the local primary school. I've also worked at a second primary school as a (paid) teaching assistant and have several close friends who teach (or are recently retired) in primary and secondary schools. From my experience and what my friends tell me, I can only conclude that perhaps with a few exceptions, schools are being run by incompetent and/ or disinterested staff who appear to lack basics in common sense, maturity, people-skills, general knowledge and a dedication to educate and improve the lot of the next generation. Then add to that the large class sizes, a large number of pupils whose first language is not English, an increase in pupils with special needs and behavioural problems, an increase in secondary school pupils with reading levels below the age of 9, increasingly poor behaviour amongst pupils and some being described as "feral", lack of funds and general lack of motivation amongst teachers and pupils. It all adds up to a vision of hell. No wonder our students are comparing so badly to the students of other countries (I've heard it suggested that in sciences, our pupils are about 5 years behind their Chinese equivalent by the time they take their GCSEs). Frankly, our children don't stand a chance.
@ I completely agree with your comment. I’ve seen mainstream media repeatedly spread misinformation and misleading data about education. With only a few exceptions, most schools and school leaders are struggling in absolute chaos. Academy trusts are placing immense pressure on headteachers, particularly regarding school funding and budgets, which is severely impacting the quality of teaching and staff. This has resulted in a poorly designed curriculum that affects all students, especially those with special educational needs (SEN). Personally, I also believe the Department for Education needs a complete restructuring. It requires strong, intelligent leadership, but many of the most capable minds are leaving for better, more rewarding careers elsewhere. As a result, the education sector seems to be attracting mediocrity, with far fewer talented individuals to choose from.
Daniel- I wish all politicians had your intelligence, good manners and clear explanation. Sadly we have a lot of idiots particularly in government, who are ruining this country and they do not represent the majority of decent citizens.
I still hold the previous Tory government responsible for alot of things but this Labour government are doing so much damage so quickly, it's genuinely shocking.
My grandson got a plumbing apprenticeship prior to covid. Needless to say, that disappeared. He then got another, this time joinery. When his employer's new house was finished, my grandson and others were laid off. All too often, apprentices are cheap labour and therefore disposable.

They do think that, all Labour MPs (and most from other parties) suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect. From Wiki : "The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias that causes people to overestimate their abilities or knowledge in a specific area. It's often caused by a lack of self-awareness".
Who does actually run the country? Not Parliament! Parliament is a group of politicians whose sole purpose is to come up with POLICY DECISIONS, plus ensure that their department is funded to a maximum level, and finally to fall on their sword if it is necessary to defend a policy. The people who actually run the country are a bunch of largely faceless Civil Servants. Indeed, I have long held the view that if you wanted to take over the control of the UK then all you need to do is to move your people into the Civil Service and take it over in a slow and calculated revolution.

I never voted for her and never will. They think they should pick an idea out of their head, notice I never said brain, and act on it. The trouble with politicians is that they are career politicians, only there to get what they can for themselves.
When I was at school, some of my teachers had been in HM Forces during World War II and they were given free government training to go into teaching. I also remember when many trainee teachers went to special "teacher training colleges" rather than universities. Before I retired, I was a university academic/lecturer/researcher by trade and many of my students were studying for their Master of Education degrees which was the qualification they were expected to have if they were to have a successful career in teaching. Now we are back to teaching being a "skill" where they study through an apprenticeship as though they were training to be a plasterer or hairdresser. Funny old world.
I'm getting older so everyone treats me like an idiot. Must admit it sometimes is handy when I can't be bothered. A friend was being hounded on telephone by charities told one caller the person they wanted was no longer here. When asked if they moved replied no they are not here anymore. All calls stopped instantly.
It was my company, in the late 1990s, (ADS Worldwide Ltd) that was one of the first companies in the country that re-introduced the Apprenticeship, then called the Modern Apprenticeship. It was the unions that virtually destroyed on-the-job training Schemes by insisting that any trainee over the age of 18 should be paid 80% of the minimum journeyman’s wage (Not to be confused with the minimum wage). Any school leaver between the age of 16 and 18 was paid 60% of the journeyman’s wage. The result of these policies were that there was a huge skills shortage in the UK. The modern apprenticeship scheme reintroduced the idea of the indentured apprentice with external auditing. We also introduced a more sensible pay structure based on calculations rates of pay meaning it was kept low in the first year increasing by a set percentage each year with the final year being 75% of the minimum for the job and then receiving at least the minimum Journeyman’s wage when they came out of their time (again not to be confused with the minimum wage, a wage that has become the benchmark for at least most un-skilled positions, barely above the poverty line.)
Bridgit Phillipson's claims turning out to be nonsense is just yet another example of why people are so sick and tired of politicians, I'd sooner believe an estate agent.
Would t it be beautifully refreshing if a politician stood up and said “fair point, I will take that on board and see what we can do” , would gain respect for the party and the process rather than this childish behaviour we are so accustomed to.
I wrote to my new labour MP for Hemel Hempstead several times but I have only got responses such as I’m setting up my office. I’ve received a letter today. Email stock written letter with my name on to say he’s ever so busy answering so many emails he just hasn’t had time. I find this pretty poor considering when I wrote to the previous incumbent who was a Tory he would always write back to me in ink 😮
Politicians have been shown to have similarly developed brains as actors, which says a lot for the way they conduct themselves. One thing that haunts me is that would I employ a politician for any role apart from a political one and would they be competent for anything else? The answer is probably not and yet we have them running a phenomenally wealthy organisation. The current Labour Govt does not seem to me to be competent enough to hold that position. Take Rachel Reeves for instance, who has been selected as Chancellor, in charge of our finances, she has little experience of high level finances having just a Master degree in Economics and relatively low level positions in financial institutions for only a few years where she did not excel. I had much more faith in Rishi Sunak as Chancellor given his CV and clear reputation in high finance. Even Jeremy Hunt had credibility as Chancellor because of his business interests.
Accusation of Anger: She accuses the Tory benches of being angry about her bill, yet in her own post, she displays significant anger when discussing issues. The speaker points out the irony in her criticizing others for being angry while expressing her own frustration, even to the point of making a typo ("plenty anger" instead of "plenty of anger"), which shows her own haste and anger. Defending Ideas: Phillipson claims that the Tory benches offer "little by way of ideas," but the speaker argues that, as a government minister, it is her responsibility to propose ideas and lead the charge, not just criticize the opposition. The opposition’s role is to hold the government accountable, not to take on the government's responsibilities. Taking Credit for Previous Government Achievements: Bridget Phillipson takes credit for the success of apprenticeship statistics, which, as the speaker points out, were largely due to policies and actions taken before the Labour government came into power. The speaker argues that Labour cannot truly claim these results, as they relate more to the actions of the previous government, not their own.
Many years ago, I sat next to the PR department in a fairly large corporation. I'd overhear how everything, from a downturn in figures to redundancies, and everything in between would be spun into some amazing success story. Company operations would be reclassified as a drive in growth, a new focus, etc. It would appear that Bridget, and in fact most politicians in general, operate from this very same playbook.
It seems to me that most in the current government do not have a single original idea. Also, they think the general public is poorly educated. No the ones been allowed into the country are often poorly educated if indeed they have had any education. I worked in secondary education where there was no class that did not include EAL and the lower ability could often had student from completely different language experience. This makes teaching neigh on impossible if trying to keep up with the expected pace of an academic year. As for this idea of training from scratch while on the job as a teacher, the students are the ones being let down. If you do not have the subject knowledge to start with, how can you teach the curriculum in your chosen subject area? I've worked with people doing their teacher training (not the PGCE qualification) but who have a degree in their chosen subject for example mathematics and as a HLTA I ended up training them in terms of the curriculum and class control. I still admire anyone that successfully gets through those two years because it is unbelievable tough. They are expected to act as a fully qualified teacher with tutor group responsibility as well as subject.
They are following an agenda and a script that has been given to them. They don't care what we think, feel, believe or know any more. The agenda must be pushed at all costs. And both the Tories and Labour are pushing it.
They DO think we are THAT stupid, so what? They are going to continue to treat us this way because they can and to quote a movie,"... and you will do nothing, because you can do nothing".
These people do not seem to be politicians, they are instead Activists, who get angry and irate the moment anyone questions anything about their ideology.
Im not a high paid politician but the first thought that came to my mind when i saw Labour taking credit for these placements was, when would those apprentices have actually applied for the placement? Pretty sure they didnt apply, get accepted and started all from July when Labour took charge. Always a lagging indicator for time/process that has gone before them. I see it and get it, why dont our Labour government - they really do think we are stupid dont they! Not quite the plagiarism of Rachel Reeves but similar, taking credit for work that is nothing to do with them - this MP should be quite embarrassed!
I'm a Toolmaker, and my father was a toolmaker, as was my grandfather. apprenticeships have steadily declined for the last 20 years, we gave up on them...
I remember the apprenticeships Labour were a part of in the 90’s, employers had people doing menial tasks, learning very little and Labour handed out vast sums of money to them for it. I do hope they’ll be monitoring these apprenticeships this time.

That's why they wanted to destroy the private schools - not enough indoctrination happening there and too much free thinking..

You know when a politician is lying, as their lips move.
I can confirm that over the period mentioned level 2 to level 4 apprenticeships had nothing to do with the Labour government.

I really wish this government would realise that they are no longer in opposition. Their job is to defend their plans not attack other people.
These politicians are in the wrong business. Perhaps they should apply for apprenticeships with the circus. The whole lot of them would make great Clowns.

How about a petition to sack the government?
It already exists and in past thee million signatures.

They DO think we're that stupid. ALL Politicians think we're THAT stupid.
I'm getting older so everyone treats me like an idiot. Must admit it sometimes is handy when I can't be bothered. A friend was being hounded on telephone by charities told one caller the person they wanted was no longer here. When asked if they moved replied no they are not here anymore. All calls stopped instantly.
I've never experienced life under such an incompetent government.
What happened to the missing tax payers money that disappeared due to her mother.🤔
Labour’s Usual lies, do we expect anything else from this awful government.

Not surprised.
Thanks for your insights, not a day goes by when I speechless of this government's stupidity.
Two things are infinite,...Space, and level of stupidity in the Labour party.
I hate when people take credit for other people's ideas/work. Shameful!!
