its not technically origami if its not a square piece of paper and u are using scissors.

Any type of paper can be origami, rectantle or what ever. Idk what it's actually called but when they cut i think it's called kirigami

It is still an origami even if he didnt use a square paper but i do agree with you on the cutting part because it is called kirigami not origami when you use scissors

If you were actully thinking You would know that origami/japanese PAPER FOLDING arts, is paper folding, or kirgami but its only two cuts so not really

The triangle is fine, you can start with any shape since it is no different than just folding that shape. But once you allow cutting you may as well just do paper mache.
