    This is a very cool conversion. Nice quality parts, Nice mechanical skills.
    FAST from 0 to 30, Quick to 60, Faster than gas to 100 ..... Electric is all about the torque.
    More wind load at higher speed will drain the energy much faster than rolling along at 35mph.
    You can have range and speed, just not on the same fillup, like a gas car with a 2gal gas tank that takes 5hrs to fill.
    You can go 100mph on 2gal of fuel, but you won't get 30mpg.

    As the battery pack starts to drain down,the inverter can adapt to the lowering votlage from the battery pack by automatically boosting it back up to full voltage so still have full power.

    This set up makes the car go faster no matter torque (twisting power) or Horse power (units of measurement). When quantitative analysis is applied here then in theory it produces 400 horse power compared to the old boxer Engine @ 185 brake horse power.

    Lets say as this :
    Heavy truck 3500 rpm, 1000 hp, 3000 Nm, top speed 120km/h
    Car 10 000 rpm, 1000 hp, 1000 Nm, top speed 420km/h
    So if you need somthing to pull you need low rpm with high Nm or if you want speed you need high RPM with lower Nm (both car and truck have same HP 1000 )
    You must first know what you need for then find balance between HP and RPM.

    i find the driving experience should be and always be hearing the engine, using the the gearbox and the way the power is delivered to the wheels. stuff like that give the car its personality. the electric engine sound like they will be ok for the people who just want to get from A to B on short distance trips but for people who just want to enjoy the car.... its going to take alot of convicing for most people to make the change when more electronic cars come out

  • @sn0wchyld
    @sn0wchyld 11 років тому

    depends on your application, but rpms are largely irrelevant so long as you can gear it down to whatever speed you want. it only comes down to the toque required to do the work, and the power required to produce that torque at the desired rpms. So to answer you question simply... its all about power. power is work done per unit time, the more work you do, the more(or rather faster) things can be moved.

    I think you need to look up the relation between power, rpms and torque. if you have two 1000hp motors like the ones you're comparing, then they can both produce the exact same torque if geared to the same rpm output via a gearbox (ignoring losses in that gearbox). whats more important is the size and weight of the motor per kw produced. small high rpm motors can produce more power per kg/L, and thus are more usable in a sports car.

      Simply you put the car in a test bench and you measure the torque, the hp and the speed all in one shot.

  • @RChero1010
    @RChero1010 9 років тому +15

    People are so misled by how fast a car is. Horsepower means absolutely nothing. It just describes how well the torque is maintained as RPM increases. So people say, "Oh that diesel only has 500 horsepower, my ubiquitous supercar is faster" well, no. The supercar revs super high, and maintains it's torque at high RPM, so it has a high horsepower number. However, the diesel may only rev to about 4000 or 5000, but it has a stupid amount of torque. The low redline means that 500 horsepower at 4000 RPM translates into a much more powerful engine.
    That is why electric cars in particular, are thought of as slow because they only have 200 horsepower. But, as soon as the motor gets off of the starter solenoid, if it is brushless, or from absolute 0 rpm with a brushed motor, you have more torque than just about any clutch, transmission, or tire can handle.

    • @RChero1010
      @RChero1010 8 років тому +5

      I have an addition to make, my statement applies to diesel and electric engines and motors, however, with gasoline engines, IF your engine revs REALLY high, such as a sport motorcycle engine or formula 1 engines, your gearing can be ridiculously short, so you can get a great mechanical advantage. However, that mechanical advantage is to make up for the lack of torque. Torque is a force, horsepower is just a descriptor, so in the end, the amount of torque at the wheels is what moves you.

    • @irasthewarrior
      @irasthewarrior 6 років тому +3

      Dude. HP or watts (different units that measure power) is a product of torque and RPM. An internal combustion engine can develop its max HP at one speed only which is the maximum allowed RPM for that engine. If your 500 HP engine can run at a maximum 5000 RPM, it means that at 2500 rpm it will develop only 250 HP. As the engine's RPM increases, so the HP will increase until it reaches 500 HP. An electric motor is much more flexible because it can use all the available power at almost any RPM. If the RPM is increased, the torque will decrease to match the power delivered to it. If you feed an electric motor with 500 HP of electricity, it will use it all regardless of its speed. And that's why a 500 HP electric motor will perform better than a 500 HP gas or diesel engine. Got it ? It's physics. FYI at low RPM, no internal combustion engine can match the torque of an electric motor, that's why locomotives use electric transmission instead of a crankshaft and gearbox to get the tonnage moving. Btw 500 HP at 4000 rpm means 500 HP, not more.

    • @benterry2681
      @benterry2681 5 років тому

      What you said is completely wrong. So many wannabe mechanical engineer don't understand hp is a direct translation of power 1 hp = 745.7watts so what it means is this is a 300KW motor. Being 300KW is its maximum power delivery. I'd understand if you said my car has 300ft/lb of torque its faster than your 250ft/lb of torque car as the lower torque car may rev faster and be quicker, but hp is a combination of rev's and torque which means directly how fast the car can accelerate, the only additional factors then is weight, drag friction ect. I'd agree in part if compared to a turbo engine a 200hp electric will probably beat a 250hp turbo as the turbo's power delivery is far from linear but compared to a naturally aspirated car the figures are pretty comparable in acceleration.

    I wonder if he has the same problems that the tesla has.. From the Battery to the motor, the Tesla was designed very well, yet take it around a track and see how it holds up. The batteries curve with use, and going on a track really emphasizes this. Battery tech needs to go through a few more leaps and then it will be compatible to internal combustion. As for now there are some obstacles to overcome : /

      I think typical car uses 20kW of power if you drive "economically". One hour of 20kW driving is 20kWh. How much 1kWh cost in the US?

    • @doggydeeds
      @doggydeeds 9 років тому

      ***** America's national average is $.12 per kw/h. That means that an hour or driving at 20 kw/h would be $2.40, but that doesn't sound right to me.
      The Nissan Leaf can do 500 Km for $5, the average speed is 80 or 90 km/ph, that means the the Leaf uses about 80-90 cents per hour.

    • @technics6215
      @technics6215 9 років тому +2

      Boris Tyson I saw Nissan Leaf data. It has 24kW/h battery. Full charging cost $2,88 (at $0.12/kWh). In ideal conditions, on highway at 60km/h range is 222km, so it uses 11kWh/60km or 11kWh/hour. So Leaf can do 500km for $5, but this is for ideal conditions and not 80-90km/h. There are test results at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf However I'm pretty impressed. Maybe it's time to put some solar panels on roof and harvest "free" energy?

    No. hp, or kw, is a measurement unit. tell me which has greater volume, a liter of water or a liter of oil? its the same with power. a 400hp motor puts out the same (peak) power as a 400ph engine. The difference that you've missed is that the motor will put out that power at much lower rpms, and over a broader range of rpms than the engine, which is why it so easily outperforms it.

    I agree, to a degree. NASA has been using Hydrogen/Oxygen fuel cells to produce electricity for nearly 50 years. Electric cars simply haven't caught on because the car companies aren't making them available. I've seen one Chevy volt on the highway. I've yet to see a Chevy volt, Nissan leaf, or mitsubishi Imiev for sale at a dealer. They aren't selling because the majority of people will not buy a car without driving it or at least seeing it in person. In the end the car companies will stop make EVs and say no one bought them. Its pointless on a full course track, other than drag racing, they 'sag' after a hard lap and continue to decline in speed AND torque just as a simple R/C car does. As impressive as they can be in the 1/4 mile, you wont see electric on an F1, Le Mans, or NASCAR for that matter anytime soo. They can be fast but it kills any endurance. Our current tech allows for the slow but steady method, and that alone... at least for now.
